Puerto Rico: the Wet Side’s Gory

September 27, 2017 By: Primo Encarnación Category: Uncategorized

Haven’t been around as much as I’d like lately, and I apologize.  Family health stuff, much more pressing job, yadda yadda – the exigencies of life.  But what with learning that Puerto Rico is in the midst of an ocean that, apparently, our navy can’t navigate past Gitmo, I reflected on what else is true about Puerto Rico, and came to the realization that everything Trump knows about it, he learned on Broadway in the 50s.  So I’ll just leave the stage version of these lyrics, from West Side Story, right here:

ROSALIA
Puerto Rico,
You lovely island . . .
Island of tropical breezes.
Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossoms blowing . . .

Chita Rivera as Anita (Broadway)She’s STILL hot, BTW

ANITA
Puerto Rico . . .
You ugly island . . .
Island of tropic diseases.
Always the hurricanes blowing,
Always the population growing . . .
And the money owing,
And the babies crying,
And the bullets flying.
I like the island Manhattan.
Smoke on your pipe and put that in!

OTHERS
I like to be in America!
O.K. by me in America!
Ev’rything free in America
For a small fee in America!
ROSALIA
I like the city of San Juan.
ANITA
I know a boat you can get on.
ROSALIA
Hundreds of flowers in full bloom.
ANITA
Hundreds of people in each room!
ALL
Automobile in America,
Chromium steel in America,
Wire-spoke wheel in America,
Very big deal in America!

Rita Moreno as Anita (Movie) and lately
Also, still caliente!

ROSALIA
I’ll drive a Buick through San Juan.
ANITA
If there’s a road you can drive on.
ROSALIA
I’ll give my cousins a free ride.
ANITA
How you get all of them inside?

ALL
Immigrant goes to America,
Many hellos in America;
Nobody knows in America
Puerto Rico’s in America!
ROSALIA
I’ll bring a T.V. to San Juan.
ANITA
If there’s a current to turn on!
ROSALIA
I’ll give them new washing machine.
ANITA
What have they got there to keep clean?
ALL
I like the shores of America!
Comfort is yours in America!
Knobs on the doors in America,
Wall-to-wall floors in America!
ROSALIA
When I will go back to San Juan.
ANITA
When you will shut up and get gone?
ROSALIA
Everyone there will give big cheer!
ANITA
Everyone there will have moved here!
Be social and share!

  1. Is it the truth that Trump has a little something to do with Puerto Rico being in debt. Something about a golf course project there?

    1
  2. Ha! Thank you Primo! Excellent.

    2
  3. I love West Side Story. The song about Officer Krigby (?) is great too.

I’m hearing Orange Whore hates PR because his golf course went bust so he’s doing his usual thing, taking his failures out on them. The scum ball. BTW, he didn’t “own” the course, he “managed” it, so the failure is not his fault. President Loser never takes responsibility for anything, never admits his failures too numerous to mention.

  4. Officer Krumpke. I loved West Side Story too. Probably one of my all time favorite movies.

  5. Anyone else notice Cheeto Benito did nothing until the PR Governor said all the storm victims would come to the mainland?

Can’t build a wall for that.

Now we have to rebuild Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico with the GOP trying to give tax cuts to the rich.

  6. Primo Encarnación says:

Let’s not forget the US Virgin Islands. They’ve been devastated/ignored, too!

    7
  7. I figured Trump was ignoring PR because
    1. Lots of the people have skin darker than his
    2. They vote for Democrats

  8. Primo – always glad to see ya.
I have slightly different lyrics in my version. But I grew up with the soundtrack from the movie, not the Broadway show.

Music by Bernstein, lyrics by Sondheim. It simply does not get any better.

  9. Oddly enough, as PR is an island in the Carib. a helluva lot of people here equate it with Cuba! Lord, just let me get a peaceful moment today.

  10. Krupke! That’s it! Thanks for tweaking the memory cells AK Lynne. It is good to hear from you whenever you can Primo.
