Personal

March 12, 2020 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Today I found out that I have to have about $10,000 worth of plumbing work done, and that they shut down major league baseball.

You know that you have lived your life well if the second half of that sentence upsets you more than the first half.

(By the way, I do not need plumbing advice. Everybody wants to tell me they know a plumber. I only use union plumbers and electricians.  I figured the only good part is that I am helping a union guy provide food for his family, but now I’m sending his kid to college.)

Be social and share!

  1. Shows you aren’t a thuglican or lieatarian because you are willing to get work done now instead of trying to make it work until next flood, natural disaster and then try to sneak the cost into a FEMA application for disaster relief.
Now that is the thuglican way.

  2. $10,000.00???? for a toilet? Jesus….. You are living in the wrong part of Texas. Around here where I live, in Lee County,
you can get a privy installed for about $75.00. Add a couple of windows (the kind that are really so old they have color in them.) And you’re ready to go. Hell, for another $25 most guys will make it a two-holer…..

  3. Well, people a half mile from me, on the Kansas City, Missouri side of state line, are bereft about MLB going into hibernation.

But my neighbors on the Kansas side, most of whom proudly fly Jayhawk flags on their houses and cars, are alternately homicidal and suicidal that the NCAA tournament was cancelled.

I am just glad that our big dog shows last weekend were unaffected. Our timing was good.

The only poem I could find both political and sort of plumbing:
You said the swamp would be drained,
Were elected, and that day it rained
And the sharks who were waiting
    Began masturbating
And the gators were well entertained.
    Garrison Keillor

    Good luck!

“Effectively immediately, the Palm Beach International Boat Show and Superyacht Show Palm Beach have been postponed until further notice.

Adhering to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and City of West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James’ recommendation to suspend all mass gatherings over contagion concerns, we fully support the decision as the health and safety of our visitors, community, exhibitors, staff and vendors is our top priority. We are currently working with the City of West Palm Beach to identify a new date. We wish to thank our city officials and the boating community for their ongoing support.”

Ms. Juanita Jean Herownself, been awhile since your last kid graduated? $10G will pay for a year at a respectable pre-school. We were looking at “average” costs of tuition at various state universities as part of an equation to figure a ‘reasonable’ minimum wage. Reasonable being what a kid would need to earn working weekends and summers to defray the cost of their education. No surprise $15/hr isn’t it. $22 is closer, while $30 makes it “doable,” not generous but doable. Such has been inflation ever since the formula was rigged to hide the actual rate of inflation.

    slipstream @15,
I think that we’ll be able to pick out some very nice deeply discounted, lightly ‘pre-owned’ superyachts next week in many ports… /s … given the equity and petro market collapse in progress.

The Middle East production areas, Texas, OK, ND, etc., are going to get blasted.
The Saudis are going into dangerous waters. They have the lowest production ‘cost per bbl of crude’, ~$8.50/bbl, but –have to– sell it for at least $60+/bbl in order to cover their ‘welfare state’, and especially support the very expensive, huge ‘royal family’ parasitical class [there are many thousands of them living large]. Watch for the beheadings and dissection-disposals to begin.

A tip, the near and middle term future will be a very good time to pick up some excellent deals [of the ‘distressed’ kind], stuff like vehicles, RV’s, aircraft, real estate, etc.
Cash will be king as the panic spreads and people tighten up after the recent buying binge [at least around here].

  25. Old Fart says:

If the Dow well and truly craters, we are confronted with a world that essentially hasn’t changed for the non-investor class (yet) except by choice. And then the reality that stocks and bonds are valued by choice (will?) in the face of the largest challenge to confidence since the Second World War (? Or Cuban blockade?), Any leader, even Carter, could bring us back, but it’s the King of Bankruptcies who is in charge.

Maybe our Higher Power is telling us that we are going the wrong way, and we can work together. Or not…

In case you missed why the best candidate for saving the country isn’t an old white guy: Sen. 33. Sandridge says:

    Ormond Otvos @32,
I agree with this writer, who argues that these extreme downs and ups are a sign of major instability, and could lead to a unprecedented global meltdown.

    https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/3/13/1927179/-Don-t-take-news-reports-on-single-day-stock-market-recovery-seriously
    “They’re profound, profound instability.

When you get swings this big, repeating and increasing like this the result has NEVER been a recovery.

Rather, this is a giant global pool of money — the same one that crashed real estate values in 2008 — looking desperately for a ‘safe’ place to place their money, and some folks trying to cash in on the downward trend cycle. This is NOT a healthy market — do NOT sink your nest egg thinking this is some ‘bottom’ we’ve hit or are getting out of.
This is the biggest raw amount of instability I’ve ever seen — both for our market, and for the world.

These wide-swing bouts of super-instability, INCLUDING these short up-swings are some of the most dire indications to me.
All I’m saying is that you don’t trust the news reports about some single-day “recovery” as a reason to invest.”
