They Had a Plan

July 25, 2024 By: Half Empty

When Joe Biden stepped aside in his re-election campaign last Sunday, practically the first thought that came to mind was, “I hope they have a plan.”

Well, apparently, they had a plan. The transition was as smooth as you could make it. Very quickly, a sufficient number of delegates confirmed their votes for Harris in order to put a lock on the nomination. A historical influx of campaign cash came in from first-time donors. Tens of thousands of campaign volunteers signed up.

People were all in.

Sen. Joe Manchin (I – WVA) was the only one to try and muddy the waters by threatening to re-register as a Democrat and oppose Biden’s nominated successor.

But that fizzled after almost an entire day, and any further gathering of buzzards didn’t happen.

Another worrisome issue was MAGA Republican litigation. We’ve been witness to enough legal efforts to usurp electoral results that not to expect lawsuits from them over our “ol’ switcheroo” was a fantasy.

But so far, the only thing we’ve seen from MAGA Republicans is a complaint to the Federal Election Commission. And we all know what typically happens to these complaints. Nothing, until after the general election. Then, generally nothing after that.

But I’m still waiting for that shoe to drop. Why no lawsuits have been filed – to my knowledge anyway – is a mystery. Are they waiting for the last minute? Are they still thinking about it? Has someone told them that as a political party, we can nominate whomever we damned well please, and they have no case?

I haven’t unbuckled my seat belt yet. There may still be some turbulence ahead.

On Assignment Until August 12

July 25, 2024 By: Fenway Fran

Toons for tomorrow are set up and scheduled. Apologies, I did not have time to do my usual scouring so it is a short and sweet Friday. It was another crazy week of highs and lows. My excuses are pretty extensive. Since last Friday’s post, I have done two marimba gigs with my bandmates, taken a red eye to Boston via Seattle, spent several days visiting my ailing 97 year old mother, taken an almost redeye back to Portland last night/this morning, and am preparing to return to the airport hotel tonight for an early morning flight to Berlin via Chicago and Frankfurt. I’d better buy some carbon offsets for my travel this summer, I still have a trip back east for a nephew’s wedding in late August.

Back in an earlier life, I was a fisheries biologist with NOAA/NMFS at the Northeast Fisheries Center lab in Narragansett, RI. In those days, we did lots of cooperative research on Georges Band/Gulf of Maine with Poland, Russia, Germany and France. I spent a lot of time on the Polish RV Wieczno, and in the summer of 1977, visited many of my Polish shipmates in their home country. It was a memorable 25th birthday trip, believe me! I am excited to travel with my friend KW of Polish descent who worked in Berlin and Poland for the German Marshall Fund in the 90s. We’ve talked about doing this since we met 9 years ago, and it’s finally happening. I will even get to reunite with Marianna, my Polish counterpart from the research cruise days, for 3 days in Gdansk. It will be a very different Poland than I visited 47 years ago.

We will also spend time in the Tatras, Zakopane and Krakow for 3 nights each, and will meet up with a friend of KW who is coming to Krakow from Ukraine. I am excited to hear what the people in Berlin, Poland and Ukraine are thinking about our crazy election season, and will post when I get back. I did not want to drag a computer along, and you know how cell phones are…

So, no Toons from me until August 16th. Maybe Half Empty can put up a few, he’s really good at feeding them to  me!!!!

Na Zdrowie!!!

Ancient Chinese Curse: May You Get What You Wish For

I’ve had it with the cries of foul. The cries that exchanging the old man with a young fresh face is so unfair that it must be illegal.

I observed previously that while some Democrats (myself included) were of the opinion that Biden shouldn’t quit, MAGA Republicans held that as a sincere belief. It was a fait accompli: Biden is the target and no one else.

From the linked article:

They’re stuck with Biden. If Biden doesn’t want to go, you can’t drag him out. He’s got the delegates to win.

and,

“President Trump just wins” if Biden steps aside; but [that won’t] happen. “I think President Trump wins either way”.

If you don’t like it when something happens, don’t ask for it.

Hillbilly Justice: Being Dissected By A Fellow Ridge Runner

I have to say, I’ve never heard of Tennessee comedian Trae Crowder before this week, and I’ll bet I’m not alone. I feel that I need to spread word of the man’s genius here, but try as I might, I cannot embed a video into the software that Juanita Jean uses from my phone. Can’t. Do. It.

But that should not deter me. This is about the best summary that I’ve ever heard of wannabe TFGVP JD.

And here you go. I share this video on “X” in the only way I know to do it.

Click HERE then tap on the frame similar to the one below to get sound.

Y’all are welcome.

Why we are afraid

July 23, 2024 By: Nick Carraway

Author’s Note: My break was short-lived. Thanks to everyone for their positive thoughts and understanding. I’ve decided this is much too important to stay on the sidelines for too long.

What I’ve noticed in the course of my lifetime is a sharp rise in political violence. The funny thing is that violence has been used as a cudgel to propose undemocratic remedies to solve a problem one side is more responsible for than the other. It is a classical move by autocratic regimes. You get people to fear something by doing it yourself and then turn around and say that you have the solution.

I could cite any number of sources but this one tells the story pretty cleary. Inside there is a figure that runs from 2000 to 2019. Inside the figure you will notice that they track violence from environmentalists, religious fanatics, far left, far right, and single issue actors. As late as 2019, far right actors accounted for more than 50 single attacks in the United States. Since the age of Trump, only right wing and single issue actors account for any significant increase. Far left actors accounted for far fewer than ten attacks. Religious actors saw a spike in 2016 over ten, but have since dropped. Environmentalists saw a big spike at the turn of the century but have since dropped to nearly zero.

I immediately did some research and found this site that completely refutes that left wing violence is a major thing. It broke down political violence into left wing, right wing, and Islamic. It broke down violence along other lines as well, so it is a very informative read. For our purposes it broke down ideological violence with 59 percent being right wing violence, 23 percent left wing violence, and between 17 and 18 percent being Islamic.

When people are threatened they immediately go into fight or flight. It’s a natural visceral reaction. Some might call it the lizard brain, but in any respects the rational side of our brains shut down and we immediately become like a cornered animal. If we believe we are constantly in danger and we are told that the other side is doing it then we are naturally going to think we need to defend ourselves.

Add in a little homophobia, xenophobia, and racism and it becomes a dangerous cocktail ready to explode. People are being bombarded with messaging that there is an invasion coming from the southern border where people are coming for your jobs, money, and they are bringing dangerous drugs designed to hook and kill your children and grandchildren.

What we see is a cognitive disconnect. All reports are that people believe crime is on the rise when it is actually the exact opposite. Former president Trump has even coined a phrase that he calls “migrant crime.” The facts don’t support him there. Yet, we see for any number of people that facts don’t seem to matter.

So, when the right is sold an overwhelming dose of fear and we know they are more likely to react violently you will understand why many of us on the left are scared. We are being sold as the enemy and there is ever-increasing rhetoric that tells people that we must eliminate the enemy through any means necessary.

There are countless examples of people believing they were safe up until the moment they weren’t. Political violence is on the upswing and it isn’t us committing the violence. The fact that many seem to think so is terrifying. The signs and evidence is out there for everyone to see. I can only hope and pray that a majority of us come to our senses and come to our senses fast.

Bumper Sticker Ideas

Here are a few bumper sticker ideas for the 2024 campaign.  I’m taking suggestions.
