Over

July 01, 2013 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

The rally is over. People are crowding into the Capitol to see what happens next.

The senate recessed until Tuesday, July 9th, which means this thing is going to drag on. However, hearings on the bills could end tomorrow.

Fun fact: Texas Republicans are saying that the people in Austin today were “just a bunch of Hollywood elites.”

Here’s the Hollywood Elites from my county.

And more good news for Texas Democrats from District Court in San Antonio. They refuse to dismiss the redistricting lawsuit. They allowed Texas Democrats to amend our lawsuit to go forward on section 3 of the voting rights act.

It’s a great day to be a Texas Democrat. The guy in the orange hat is Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa, of the Texas Democratic party.

  3. July 9th is a special day in my family. I hope that is a good omen for all of you. Just a guess: they may even drag the darn thing out until Halloween! Politicians are like that, especially the ones you are dealing with.

    3
  4. I think the folks in Austin today were the Cream of the Crop. Maybe that is the elite. Whatever! You all represented well!

    4
  5. Standing with/rooting for all of you from California!

    >>Texas Republicans are saying that the people in Austin today were β€œjust a bunch of Hollywood elites.”<<

Maybe he meant Hollywood Park, TX "elites"?

I think legislators from that area should arise and thank him for the compliment — then ask them if that makes folks from their towns somehow substandard.

    8
  9. Liberal elites? It must be true! I see you posted a photo taken by the paparazzi. (with all of the things we’ve heard Republicans say on camera, I don’t think they expect anyone else can snap a picture)

    9
  10. I think I see one of the Kardashians in that picture! LOL Hollywood elite, my big blue behind … those are real people, standing up for more real people!! You Texas Ladies and Gents just make my day … yahoo!!

    10
  11. That picture look like good, smart, fine Texas folks to me. Compared to the Regressives, we are all elites (“the group or part of a group regarded as the best, most powerful, etc.” according to Webster’s Dictionary).

    11
  12. “Movie Star Good Looks” is what they meant. That’s a fine looking bunch o’ Texas Democrats you have there.

    12
  13. Rooting for you all from California, too!

    13
  14. Keep up the good fight! With you all, from PA.

  16. Corinne Sabo says:

You guys ar Hollywood elite? More like Texas Best.

    16
  17. Lisbeth Echeandia says:

I shared the ‘Hollywood Elites’ photo on my Facebook with the comment ‘Have to say, very authentic costuming. Totally believable.’ So glad your part of the solution!

    17
  18. Elizabeth says:

I am UNSPEAKABLY tired of “elite” being code for “smarter than me.”

Massachusetts has your back. From some distance away, yes, but we still have your back.

    18
  19. I dunno JJ, that guy in the Hawaiian shirt looks a lot like Nick Nolte- : )

  20. No question that you are the (Don’t Mess With) Texas elites.

    20
  21. San Fraser says:

If you were really THAT bunch, you would have had a portable source for web casting – the shuting that off was the REALLY open government step taken by the repugs.

    21
  22. Squire Al says:

Wendy Davis! Finally a reason to start wearing my TCU class ring (If I can find it) again.

    22
  23. SomedayGirl says:

Hollywood elites?? Who knew, I thought all this time you were just compassionate, smart, strong Texans. Can I get an autograph?

    23
  24. This article says they are going to “fast track” this bill.
Dewhurst has once more suspended Texas Senate rules to allow this to be passed with a simple majority.

Any disruptions from the Senate gallery will result in arrests.

They are going to sneak this through in the middle of the night, sounds like.

Y’all did good. I’m so proud of all the women who showed up to let these idiot politicians know just what women in Texas think of them.

    24
  25. AlanInAustin says:

From the “do things our way or get arrested” dept:

“The Texas lieutenant governor’s recent threat that statehouse reporters could potentially be arrested and jailed if their behavior is deemed “not respectful” of the legislature is being called “worrisome” and “absurd” by Texas journalists.”

  26. Marion in Savannah says:

Damn. Those pictures damn near made me cry. I’m so proud of you Texas women I could scream. Y’all are in my prayers, and do know that there’s one old broad in Savannah who stands with you and Wendy. Orange makes me look green, but I’m wearing an orange shirt on July 9. Keep on keeping on. The women of America stand with you.

  28. please carry a sign for me? “TX Legislature – Women’s bodies have a way of shuttin’ that thing down.”

    pleeeeeeeeeeease?

    28
  29. Are they so dumb that they can’t see the huge number of people that disagree with them?
*That’s got to be a rhetorical question; the “dumb” is a given. If we can just get everyone out to vote in the primaries and in 2014…
I hate being patient. I want it to happen NOW!
Good job all of you who braved the elements to show our strength and solidarity.

    29
  30. MaLuisaR says:

So proud of all of you! Thank you so much for the updates! Rootin’ for ya from the CA desert! We took the “heat” for ya!

    30
  31. Thanks for the pics, Juanita Jean and friends! Wow!! It is wonderful seeing so many women and the men who love them show up to send a message to TX GOP pols that they’ve had enough of their anti-women shenanigans.

    31
  32. The pictures were from my best gal-pal’s daughter Margaret, a fine Texas school teacher, who is married to a wonderful man who was also there to support women and democrats!

    Jodi – seriously cool!

    32
  33. JuneBug says:

Those pictures were so powerful they gave me chillbumps even in Houston…in July!

    33
  34. Any idea of the number of people who attended the rally?

    34
  35. carolyn clark says:

Many of us hooter toters in California are watching and cheering on our sisters (and their friends) in Texas. We honor your efforts and believe your efforts and resolve will benefit all women. GOOD JOB.

  36. Ellen Childress says:

Just like the Republicans to shut down the statehouse for a week.Check around for some clandestine activity somewhere. You can bet they are not going to waste a full week of a thirty day special session on celebrating the 4th. These are not nice people you’re trying to deal with.

    36
  37. Photos of July 1, 2013 rally, Austin, Tx. They should finish uploading about midnight. πŸ™‚ No edits….just real people, really pissed off people. πŸ™‚ What a great day.

  39. MB Hayes says:

Orange you just BEAUTIFUL! With you all the way from Wisconsin. We watched you all day and will keep watching.
We gotta get these kookabird governors and their friends out of our statehouses.

    39
  40. Grace Newton says:

They expect the protesters to get distracted or tired of running to Austin and lose interest. Or they’re going to try to sneak a vote in as Ellen suggests. I’m sure dirty tricks will be the least of the manipulative stunts the Republicans will pull. I just hope the Texas Democrats can out fox them.

Is there such a thing as a portable wi-fi the Democrat can bring in for the next protest? Given the field I work in, I should know and I kind of do, but I’m not sure how difficult it would be and what kind of vehicle it would take.

    40
  41. MB Hayes says:

Hollywood elites cause these are the “REAL” women of Texas.

    41
  42. Darby Stevens says:

Standing with you from West Virginia!

    42
  43. Litlhorn says:

Don’t ya’ll have ALECS “Stand your ground” laws in Texas? I ain’t saying for sure, but it seems to me a whole passle of Women are feeling threatened by this bill. Might be time for the Repugs to invest in a little body armour….

    43
  44. Dave in Austin says:

    Just a question…..

Why has no one called for a general strike on the menfolk surrounding this issue?? Wars have been avoided in the past do to lackonookie and the general female shutdown. Use of that tool can be very persuasive.

Those of us who are in agreement on the issue don’t have much to worry about.

    Thoughts??

    44
  45. This was my posting on the Washington Post earlier today, concerning Rick Perry and the abortion denial bill:

    1. The intent of this bill is NOT to focus on the humanity of the child, the health of the woman or anything like that. It is, as Lt. Gov. Dewhurst has stated, “is to shut down every abortion clinic in the state.’ It is to DENY the right to an abortion to women, protecting the unborn doesn’t come into the equation here.

    2. Mind you, the state has draconian requirements for Medicade and other social services, so once you’r’e born, you’re going to be living in poverty. You won’t get sufficient food for being a healthy child, you won’t get sufficient education to grow up with a chance to make something of yourself, and you won’t matter in the eyes of the Republicans who *forced* you to be born into these conditions.

    3. And don’t look to the religious groups and the ‘right to life’ groups for help, as the odds are you’ll be of the wrong race and they won’t give you the time of day if you asked. Again, they’re only concerned with your existence while you’re in the womb… once you’re out, we don’t give a damn whether you live or die, and we’re not going to help you live.

    4. This is typical of all states passing abortion restrictions… the people passing them are all male, usually conservative, likely evangelical, and the moment you’re born they turn their backs on you and refuse to help you survive.

I’m with you gals on this…

    45
  46. pk scott says:

I went with my daughter. I really hope this translates into something sustained. The politicians who support this crap know it won’t hold up in courts. It is red meat for the extreme right wing of their party. They have created and environment where you cannot be too conservative only too moderate for the TP people who will primary you out with some mouth breather for daring to be rational.
Of course it will cost a few women’s LIVES. Can we get the math on that governor? Senator? Representative? How many votes per dead woman? Because really you are so effing “pro life”
When you look at the totality of the policies and programs the “pro life” party support they are more accurately ANTI WOMAN or “pro death” of anything that ain’t old male and white or a fetus.

    46
  47. Thanks from Colorado…It seems we have our own “wingers” from Texas living in and trying to destroy Colorado, The 51st state…You are fighting for more than Women’s rights, you are an example of “big D” Democracy in action…this is bigger than Texas, imagine that…

My daughter-in-law and I made it to the rally and my son was able to join us during his lunchtime. It was heartening to see so many young men and women there along with us old relics. The speakers were inspiring, the music was great, and halfway through mother nature gave us the gift of clouds and a nice breeze. I looked for you JJ but didnt know which tree you were under. πŸ™‚ I dont comment much but your blog is bookmarked on my phone and tablet.
