Oh, Dude, Madam Karma Just Whacked You Upside the Head
So, they finally finished reading Ron Johnson’s demand of reading of Covid relief bill.
Then Republicans got ready for 20 hours of debate for each side. They had their speeches all planned out and everything. But, then …
“They finished in the middle of the night and in the end, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat from the state of Maryland, rose to ask for some consent to restart this debate beginning at 9 a.m. today in the U.S. Senate,” she said.
Van Hollen asked for 3 hours of debate instead of twenty hours.
And … Johnson was not there to object.
So … it was adopted and now Republicans have 3 hours of debate time instead of 20.
Way to stompin’ go, Ron Johnson! You have just screwed yourself, sir. How proud you must be.
Thanks to everybody for the heads up.
Van Hollen must have been laughing his ass off.
1Apologies… “she”
2Ms. Juanita Jean Herownself, thank your for this bright spot in our day inadvertently sponsored by no one other than not so bright RoHo. Thanks to Senator Chris Van Hollen for being the man to bring the schadenfreude and 17 hours less of QOP.
3Well that’s a real kick in the rubber parts for the Rs. Love it.
4And RoJo is crying bout howz everybody is being mean to him. “For no reason.”
5I am remarkably proud of my Senator this morning. Nice going, Senator Van Hollen!
6Now they have to wade through the slop of 400+ republican amendments. Think Senate rules should say if your side demands reading the bell then the time taken reading should be deducted from your side’s debate time
7This will now be held up as an example of ‘cancel culture’. Too bad, so sad. Not really.
8What happens if they’re not done by the 11th?
9When I heard about his “read the bill” request I really thought that it should be required that a senator making such a request be present for the entire reading of the bill.
But I like it better that he wasn’t there with these results.
10Besides being outsmarted by Van Hollen, Johnson et al are probably despised by the Senate workers; that could make their life difficult.
11My faux pax penance…
~ emulating John McCain giving a final thumbs down on the ACA on the Senate floor on Friday –
U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema, Democrat of Arizona, appeared to be trying for the same effect, but was not heralded as a hero. Far from it.
Sen. Sinema lugged a giant chocolate cake into the Senate floor
Edit: dramatically and proudly voting against increasing the minimum wage to $15 went viral, and as it did “Marie Antoinette” trended on social media. Comparisons to the French aristocrat whose reputation for indifference to the poor by supposedly saying, “let them eat cake.”
12The Vote-A-Rama on amendments will continue for awhile. Apparently, the only ones likely to pass are those from “moderate” Democrats — diminishing the bill a bit in several areas.
13Ron johnson. This will be my second time today saying a repugnantican has “shit for brains.” It’s something I’ve thought about him since the first time I heard him speak. It’s a common gene in his party.
14mgasoid @ 2 I am confused. She who? Van Hollen is a boy.
In the antebellum Senate reading bills was commonplace. They were shorter in those days.
15I am relishing my opportunity to work and vote against Johnson if the weasel runs again.
16Harry Eagar @ 15 I mistakenly scanned the quote of Laurin Fox of CNN and didn’t pay attention to what I knew… that van Hollen was a guy, which overrode my instincts of what I knew was right. READ the Link!!
Which is why I gave everyone a tidbit story re:Krysten Sinema a cheesy attempt at garnering attention. I wished she had fallen face first into the cake!
17RJ is as insane as DJT. With a little geneological research we might find out that both had a “traveling grandfather” way back in history. Of course, RJ wasn’t there. These guys just don’t have the staying power they think they do.
As for Van Hollen, he is one of the youngest members of the Senate. I knew him when he was in the House. And it wasn’t that long ago. Good for him!
18Oh, the glee is thick enough to cut with a knife.
19Doing my happy, Schadenfreude-dance.
Gosh, did someone get RJ all upset? Does he want to pick up all his marbles and go home to his mommy? According to politicususa:
Ron Johnson Suggests That He May Leave The Senate And Not Run For Reelection

20According to Reuters:
Ron Johnson said on Friday that he could retire from office when his term expires.
The two-term Republican told Wisconsin media outlets that he has not decided whether to run for reelection in 2022 but added that not seeking another term is “probably my preference now.”
No word yet on how his family or home town have reacted.
