Here we have another reason why we can’t discuss guns.

JAK: “have the right to KEEP and BEAR arms. There is absolutely nothing there about USING them”. For years, even before mass shootings/personal expression/lone wolf problem solving because the daily event we have here, I had suggested that people should be able to buy as many gunz as they want, but that ammunition would be regulated just like prescription medicine.

Sorry if this is a bit uncomfortable, but I feel the need to urge us all to hold a mirror up to the early posts in this thread. The ones where, with no information except that a mass shooting had occurred, some of us jumped to conclusions regarding the identity and motivation of the perps. The vilification which, while possibly reasonable given previous events, turned out to be misdirected.

We so often criticize The Other Side for jumping to conclusions and throwing out blame and accusations with absolutely no evidence. Let’s try not to fall into the same trap ourselves, okay?

I want to be strong, and fair, even when events and emotions can be overwhelming. And this week has brought me to despair. To a point where I just want to say screw it, and turn off the TV, and go collect teaspoons, or something. So I treasure having a place like this, where I can come for a touch of sanity. Please, please, let’s try and keep it that way. I love you all.

Lunargent, thank you for your kind and gentle words of caution, especially the “Let’s try not to fall into the same trap ourselves, okay?” I went back, read my comments, and promise to try harder. Again, thank you for your sound advice.

As for any snacilbupeR who may be lurking with a “gotcha.” No, not even. 355/356 shootings this year obviously does not excuse leaping to conclusion. However … pay attention … however is a big word. The availability of guns played a role in 356/356. In fact, my “miss” on this latest. Really? The shooters in this ‘miss’ didn’t not purchase those modified assault rifles. Those rifles were purchased by another person. In what sane world would you say that should be possible that those rifles are readily available and someone would feel comfortable purchasing them to give to another person?

To cable news, speaking of reacting to shiny objects which I readily admit I did, can you try this? In depth reporting in each instance of carnage. Allow Fox to have this latest to mangle. Some of you return to Sandy Hook and the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shootings to give us the in-depth journalism we crave. Please.

  4. The ban on assault rifles was voted out in 2000. Is it any wonder there’s been an explosion in tragedies?

PKM – Thanks. I was worried about sounding preachy, so I appreciate your response.
