Not Fun With Guns

June 26, 2016 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Most of you have heard about the mother in Fulshear, Texas, who shot and killed both her daughters before the police were able to stop her by shooting and killing her.

Fulshear is about 12 miles from where I live.  We are in the same county as Fulshear.

This won’t be a funny story to tell.

Christy Sheats was 42 years old when she purposefully shot and killed both her daughters over a family argument. There’s no report on the subject matter of the argument.

Christy had some very strong political beliefs.  On Facebook, she played a devout Christian and Obama-hater.

She also was a gun advocate and claimed that you and I wanted to take away her guns and the safety of her children.  This post below came one day after the March 1 primary in Texas.  Christy did not vote in that election.  The only times she voted were in 2008 and 2012 general elections.

Horribly tragic.  Let that ring in your ears.

  1. No words.
Except. This will not be the last shooting like this. When guns are available, tragedies happen.

There are no words for this.

  3. another mentally unstable person, given legitimacy by the NRA & GOP cults.

  4. renee99503 says:

I don’t automatically jump to the conclusion that the shooter was mentally ill. We have seen numerous shootings where people are simply angry, drunk or high and because they have a weapon at the ready, that becomes their solution to their immediate problems.

Three more dead; two young lives cut short by NRA style “protecting” the family.

  6. e platypus onion says:

Had they taken her guns, she wouldn’t have been able to kill her daughters. Who was she defending them from? Not herself, apparently. That is where the first and only bullet should have been fired.

  7. e platypus onion says:

The NRA is only going to ramp up the fear and paranoia against Obama and Hillary. It will border on treason and of course wingnuts will aid and abet them.

Nice trade-off you stupid woman. You traded two future weddings for three immediate funerals. Save any money?

  9. That Other Jean says:

Guns and anger are a tragic, terrible combination. I cannot imagine the horror of knowing that your own mother is trying to kill you.

    9
  10. She thought she couldn’t protect herself and her family without semi-automatic handguns.

Who did she think she needed “protection” from? That’s a question that needs a rational, informed answer, and I rarely see it get one.

Another heartbreak, another statistic in the “guns in the home make you less safe” column.

  11. Looking at the photos in the linked article…. Okay, we know now that she was a psycho, but I’d have worried anyway. In both (all 3?) photos she has the exact same non-expression, and her face looks like a plastic Barbie doll’s. Too much Botox or what?

    11
  12. She shot them down in the street which makes me think she had ample opportunities to realize the lunacy of her actions. What the hell could be so bad that you would chase your daughters out into the street and shoot them dead?

I’m sure we will hear about her mental illness. Isn’t that how logical people try to understand illogical actions? But that is not good enough. What could these young women have possibly done that warranted being shot to death by their own mother?

And dad? I guess he has to live with running next door instead of tackling his wife.

    An incredible tragedy.

The only fact to address is that the photos have been obversely published.

  14. Renee99503, I’m inclined to agree with you. If we substitute, say, “sponges” for “guns,” if mom gets angry and starts sponging her daughters, they don’t die. Even if we give her “knives,” we’ve got a much better chance that at least one of them will survive. But let her get angry, give her a gun, and the rest writes itself.

And I read this morning about another case of the 6-year-old shooting the 4-year-old brother in the head.

Gotta keep them armed and ready, I guess. I wonder where the good 4-year-old with a gun was.

  15. JAKvirginia says:

And so it goes. Safety, huh? For whom?

Was she nuts? In a way. She saw every shadow as a threat. Every foreign word an infringement on her unique “Americaness”. Her fantasy of “gun power” being the last and dominant word. She was “right” and anyone who disagreed was “wrong”. And now she and her daughters are dead.

It’s not the guns. It’s what the guns represent and ultimately are — the last word. But the root of it all is this insane, bubbleheaded mentality to be right, the I’m the one with all the answers and my answers are correct.

    15
  16. maryelle says:

The nutjob paranoia comes from the NRA propaganda in order to sell more and more weapons. If only we could take away those deadly guns, so many children would be alive and well.

    16
  17. Jill Ann says:

I am currently out of the country so didn’t see this when it first happened. I do happen to have two daughters myself, who are currently living in the liberal(ish) bastion that is Austin, TX. My older daughter messaged me last night: btw Mom, thanks for not killing me. Once I figured out what she was talking about, I replied: for one thing, I’m not psycho, for another thing, I DON’T HAVE A GUN.

    17
  18. I have to say this: She will never be able to talk about how the president/government wants to “take her guns away from her so she won’t be able to protect herself and her family again.” It turned out that she didn’t use her gun to protect herself and her family, she used it to kill her own flesh and blood. I feel sorry at the loss of these two beautiful young ladies and their father who had to be taken to the hospital after Christy Sheats sought a “2nd Amendment solution” to a family argument. It’s embarrassing to live in a country where we have individuals who have internalized the belief that every problem can be solved by using a gun, and where these same persons shout about how exceptional this country is. I don’t think there’s anything exceptional at all about a nation where things like this happen because our politicians are allowing themselves to be bullied by special interest groups like the NRA and by a small percentage of the population who think guns are more sacred than God and Jesus.

    18
  19. F**k.

I hate the ones that are leading the gun paranoia fear-mongering. I deeply hate them.

    19
  20. And the gun nuts will use this as “amunition” to defend their right to arm themselves:

Ugh. Though she could have just called 911 and let the cops handle it.

Too many tears falling in Heaven and on Earth … words hold no meaning when it comes to trying to explain the why and wherefore of such as this!!

I simply SMH at the finality!!

    22
  23. JAKvirginia well said. I agree it is not the guns per se, but the attitudes that are a big part of the problem. Though just by statistics alone, it is obvious that if a gun is not available when anger or righteousnous-driven fanaticism hits, then fatal injuries will be less–not none, but definitely less.

Sorry folks, I need to share something–you are the lucky winners.

I posted a sign by a gentleman that essentially was, based on Orlando, he does not want to be focused on fear or hate, which leads to wanting to carry a gun, and instead chooses to dance with joy.

A friend of mine projected that he would probably be happier to have a partner that had a gun and was prepared to use it. I pointed out that I would be disappointed as a dancer to have a partner focusing on fear and hate. She responded how it comforts her that her husband wears a gun and is ready to protect them (her and 5 kids).

So much boggles my mind at that. Especially when I read this story…and the one on how the trained gun-carrying person in Orlando could not stop the gunman…and more. Perhaps I did her a disservice by simply responding with “I’m glad you find comfort in that” to end the discussion.

    23
  24. AliceBeth says:

So, all along she was just campaigning for the right to shoot and kill her own children? I remember in the ER (I was at work) when I first heard a mother say “I brought you into the world and I can take you out”. That mother had stabbed her son…not fatally. Who the Hell are these people?

    24
  25. Rick Stelter says:

So when will the government actually take these people at their word that they are unstable and that they should not possess or be in a home tat has guns? She posted insane rants on Facebook, police had been to the house numerous times for “unstable mental health issues” and yet, not only did they not take the guns out of the house, she was not taken to where she cold get some help that she so clear;ly needed. When will we spend some money to treat obvious mental health issues, after all, most of these people are posting on social media that they are nuts.

    25
  26. eyesoars says:

All those people out there, sure they’re just ‘another good {guy, gal} with a gun’. Even (especially!) those with anger management issues, entitlement issues, mental stability problems, &c. Up until — and often past — the time they become they bad person with a gun.

Like the CIA agent said, everyone thinks they’re good and their causes are just.

    26
  27. What a piece of Sheats.

    27
  28. It’s hard not to feel overwhelming sadness and despair. Of course, I don’t know any of these people. The sadness comes from the fact that the answer is right there in front of us and yet impossible to implement. My only saving thought is that maybe the bodies will stack high enough where a critical mass will occur.

    28
  29. Mass shootings like the disaster in Orlando may get more press attention, but any policeman can tell you that the vast majority of gun deaths are incidents just like this one: a domestic quarrel turned violent. If she hadn’t had guns, the worst she might have done was give her daughters some bruises. Guns facilitate impulse crimes and impulse suicides and that’s a simple fact.
