No, No, Not Jesus. Not Jesus At All
Gregg County, Texas, is so East Texas that if they slip, they will fall in Louisiana, so they are not big on this whole gay marriage thing.
Their County Clerk, Connie Wade, refused the gay couples who came to get married and explained that she was “waiting for direction from the Attorney General.”
Yep. That’s the reason.
Yep – there’s a Jesus wall in her county office.
Connie says the crosses are other’s, but being to one of her employees. She got threatened with a lawsuit and took them down.
Thanks to Alan for the heads up.
RE: the crosses being taken down. I went to the linked story and read the comments. I am appalled but not surprised that so many people are completely and seemingly willfully ignorant of the separation of church and state our nation is supposed, by Constitutional law, to enjoy. As a humanist I really couldn’t care less which superstition a person chooses to believe so long as they keep it to themselves and do not attempt to sully our govt with their belief. I was raised in a Christian home, my father is a retired minister and honestly…. I’m sick of these self-proclaimed “Christian” victims constantly whining about having to obey the laws of this nation. If they were truly Christians they certainly wouldn’t be the ignorant bigots they continually prove themselves to be.
1I remember when I worked in a government billing for the military I had just a catholic digest on my desk and my boss told me to put it in my desk out of site. I did but when lunch came around and I ate at my desk I would pull it out and read it.
2The woman is a full blown LIAR!
3She knows her job! The courts said discrimination is outlawed.
Do your job!!!! You don’t need some bigoted dimwitted ahole politician to tell you different!
Bearing false witness is a sin.
I’ll wait for her to read that part.
4So called “christians” are victims in their own country and demand special rights because of their religious freedumb.
5I guarantee if we elect a wingnut next year and congress stays the same as now, everything Obama has accomplished will be thrown aside by the wildest set of executive directives wingnuts can compose and they will use Obama as their precedent, irrespective of the Scotus.
6So the good Christian spends her day behind the counter bearing false witness. I’d let her have a little plaque of that one commandment as a reminder of her faith.
7epo and others: We all need to understand the power of presidential executive orders. They only have power over the Federal government’s employees. They are not laws and can be extended or rescinded by the next President. They can also be challenged in court if they go too far. Huckabee, Trump and others think they are imperial edicts to be used at will to thwart laws and SCOTUS decisions they don’t like. They are wrong. Let’s not mythologize executive orders the way R’s do.
8Thanks great site,
9I’m with JAKvirginia on executive orders. Every CEO in every organization issues these orders and most are thrown out when the regime changes. No harm there, just inefficient. One infamous case I recall was when Zumwalt left CNO he sent a fine Z-gram, his equivalent of an executive order cancelling all the previous Z-grams. In essence giving the new CNO a clean slate from which to operate. The USN didn’t collapse because of it.
10I have less than no patience with this. A public servant should be required to do their job in accordance with the provisions of the U.S. Constitution. If they find themselves incapable of that modest requirement, they should immediately vacate their public service jobs and find other employment. By-God immediately.
11Think they’d be ok with this religion decorating the walls in their little kingdom?

12Juanita, newspaper coverage (posted online), says that Gregg County is issuing SSM licenses. Might want to check
13What a fine example of charming walleyed white southern woman pulchritude. She should return home, prepare hubby’s house as her scriptures dictate and stop rendering in Caesar’s sandbox.
14She took an oath to uphold the Constitution. She did NOT take an oath to uphold the Bible. Why is that so hard for them to understand?
15Scottybeamer:
Bible – written 100 A.D. (approx.)
Constitution – written 1789
Which came first — chicken or egg? That’s their logic.
16I know nothing about this woman, but I know a little bit about people, and I can tell you this. “Religion” for this woman is not a deeply held set of morals. It’s a not-very-exclusive club she belongs to, that makes her better than everyone else, because she has some dimly understood conception of a supreme being on her side. It’s a way for her to establish her superiority in a world where, clearly, she does not register high on the superiority scale on her own merits.
God is the ace of trump (in the card sense, not in the walking hunk of noisy, hairy limburger sense). Rolling out God in an argument is the ultimate appeal to authority, the nuclear option. When you bring God into a discussion, the discussion ends, and the sermon begins. “The sky is blue. No, the sky is green. Look up, clearly that is a blue sky. Oh yeah? GOD!”
Having a private faith relationship is NOT enough for these people. They must be loudly, continually, monotonously right about everything, because “God.” And they must shine out in front of the world, boldy proclaiming their Godliness in front of everyone, to the tune of umpty-ump in-your-face crosses decorating their workspace in a prominent, public, governmental place.
Their trinity is God the Tchotchke, God the Toast, and God the Bumper Sticker. It’s not religious expression; it’s a swap meet. They don’t profess deep, sincere beliefs; they profess Christian fortune cookies. They don’t witness; they browbeat.
Maybe it’s me, but when you can’t tell the difference between Jesus and Hello Kitty, it’s time to find a new personal Lord and Savior.
But the phenomenon is not just religious. Think about racism, and that certain flag, and the way that people literally, exactly 150 years removed from the last shot of the Civil War are losing their dang minds. Think about gun ownership, and the ridiculous lengths people will go to assert their right to shoot somebody else on whatever pretext possible.
Think about how often, these three things are all found in the same unwashed, uneducated package.
Religion, racism and guns: the triad of the inherently inferior trying to feel anything but.
17@daChipster.. two thumbs up.
18Seriously, I have encountered “little people” at the bottom of a bureaucratic pile who had more brains than all the bosses put together and went ahead and actually did the right and legal thing without once relying on the boss for one damn thing. No, they did not lose their jobs. For that matter, their department sometimes got awards for professionalism and efficiency in service. Any clerk who relies on an AG like the ones trying to pervert a court order should realize that he/she should get used to living under a bridge cuz it ain’t gonna end well.
19I”m not sure its something he’s able to do..but I think Jesus is spinning in his grave..or in Heaven …where ever he is..zi know he wants to bip these people into a coma.
20The Crucifix Wall was there to intimidate all those she considered unworthy, when in reality it was she who was unworthy.
21daChipster. I love you!
22Life is so unfair. With these “religious conscience” laws these people get to NOT do their job but still get paid. That means your taxes folks.
I soooo want a job like that.
23daChipster, you win all the internets with that bodacious comment. You had me with “noisy, hairy limburger” and then it just got better.
24Paxton’s only direction is to the federal pen.
25@daChipster – Oh, that was sooooo good!
26Uh, aren’t Christians not supposed to lie to your face? Or any other way, ftm?
1] “Waiting for word from the Attorney General.” Hello? The SCOTUS trumps state attorneys general. You GOT the word already. So do your job or retire.
2] “The crosses aren’t mine.” They’re just mounted on the wall next to my desk. But no, no connection to me at all.
Uh huh. No connection to you because you don’t want to be called out [or sued, or fired] for violating the Constitution.
And hey again. Aren’t Christians supposed to uphold any oaths they swear to? Oh, yeah, that falls under the heading of lying too, doesn’t it? **Never mind.**
27I grew up in Gregg County and the memories are not truly pleasant. My father used to say that it was just about the most lawless bunch of people he had ever encountered and that local politicians were “so crooked that they probably had to screw their socks on every morning.” That was in the 1940’s. Nothing new here. I left as soon as I could and have never been back. I am not surprised at the ungodly attitude of a county employee nor the quasi-religious symbols and beliefs. But there is no reasoning with those attitudes and beliefs. It’s a waste of breath. But, hey !, that clerk is getting her 15 minutes of fame ! When you live under a rock as long as she has, fifteen minutes of criticism and public shaming probably seem like a pleasure and she wouldn’t understand the words anyhow.
28And they (according to the article) weren’t crucifixes–just crosses, some of them are even T shaped…as a Jewish person, I just plain flat don’t believe her.
29Thanks deChipster…
Gotta get another chapter written, I promised I would get this thing written by the fall.
I value you guys and your bright opinions completely!
