No, No, No, That’s Not How You Do It

October 02, 2014 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Republicans are reaching out to women, especially the young ones.

So how did they do it?  Say YES To The Candidate! They make an ad letting young women know that picking a candidate is like picking a dress.

Exactly like it! Holy cow, this is easy.  Even a blonde can pick a candidate because it’s exactly like …

Hey, y’all, it’s how most of the blondes on Fox pick their candidates.

Holy cow.

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

  1. And what woman would disapprove of a commercial where the Mom is made out to be a witchy idiot who could not be bothered to brush her hair? And witchy “friends” who completely disrespect the Mom?

  2. Marcia in CO says:

Well, that is just sad and sick! Oh wait … it’s Republican mentality!!

  3. They can’t help themselves. I am trying to figure out who they insulted worse – the goofy young girls who equate picking a candidate with picking a dress – or the goofy older women who are obviously brain-dead. Reminds me of the insulting ad aimed at Scottish mothers, who can’t make hard decisions as to the vote to remain with the British or not.

  4. UmptyDump says:

This ad was paid for by the “College Republican National Committee”, whatever that is. For certain, given the amateurish scripting, acting, staging and overall production, it was created by a bunch of naive and immature kids with zero political common sense. It’s obviously targeted at undergraduates in Pennsylvania colleges and universities with a message better crafted for kindergarteners. Any professional political ad agency creative people will hoot in derision, because seldom has an ad this bad managed to insult so many demographics: female college students, undergraduates in general and women in general … and the faculties of university theater departments. Pass out the spoons – people need to gag!

  5. Oh, that is so disgusting!

    5
  6. UmptyDump says:

… And by the way, so far YouTube viewers have flagged this with 14 likes and 148 dislikes.

    6
  7. UmptyDump says:

Oops. Only 145 dislikes so far. My bad.

    7
  8. YouTube says, “All comments are disabled for this video.” I’ll bet they were interesting.

    8
  9. @UmptyDump: that is a superlative of sorts: this video efficiently “managed to insult so many demographics” simultaneously. I say “Well done!”

    9
  10. Ok, sigh, I will make a guess here. They stumbled upon a cable program called Say Yes to the Dress which rather does feature all the crap they managed to put together.

  11. Mark Schlemmer says:

Disgusting? Are y’all kidding me? This commercial series is
PERFECT. It perfectly captures the small elements that speak of
“highly crafted” messaging. It has lovely young white women, the token black woman, over the top white wedding dresses, the equating of voting for a white man as a wedding. Simply stated, Junior Rove or whoever made this – possibly a senior thesis project?? – is someone to watch for in the future. Look in the usual places like Breitbart or on the Blaze. Top talent rises . . . . . I think some of you are just plain jealous.

  12. Polite Kool Marxist says:

That nails it. Rmoney is running in 2016 and Queenie Ann was the ‘brains’ behind this political spot.

  13. Insulting and disparaging women is what the GOP does. It is their natural and normal outreach. No surprise here.

    13
  14. And it runs counter to the stated Republican “family values.” Mom says she knows best, but is presented as a bossy, ignorant, useless person. There’s no Daddy to straighten her out and tell his daughter what’s really important. Young woman making her own decisions might (MIGHT) play with young wmen who are already Republicans, but it’s not the main GOP message about families.

To cover all the bases, you have Grandma, Mom, and Daddy watching the young woman try on dresses. No girlfriends are present, but the young woman refers to them “trying to get me to wear something really modern–not so traditional–like, you know, bright blue with fringe and sequins–like those Democrat girls from the trailer park” and Daddy says “Remember our VALUES, Princess!” and she puts her hand on his shoulder and says “I was just teasing, Daddy–what brand do YOU like.” And then Daddy tells her and that dress is obviously the best, and Mom says she always liked (a well-known older GOP candidate from somewhere else) and wishes he was running–she voted for him x times–and Grandma harks back to the wonders of Hoover. The young woman thanks them, Daddy pulls out a platinum or sapphire or whatever the heck the most prestigious card is and a blaze of light comes from it, with the message superimposed in sparkly vampire letters: “Making the right choice matters–to everyone.”

    14
  15. I’d like to say I’m shocked and appalled, but sadly I’m not. It’s too typical.

    15
  16. That’s not from The Onion?

    16
  17. When you want something done right…don’t ask a Republican.
That has to be the lamest, most insulting ad I’ve seen so far.
Is it any wonder Tom Corbett is running 18 ponts behind Tom Wolf in PA, despite the Kochroaches’ money?

    17
  18. UmptyDump says:

Mark, those thoughts were runnng through the back of my mind, too, but you said it best!

Clueless white Republicans unaware that they’re practicing tokenism. Or more pathetically – they are aware.

    18
  19. SomedayGirl says:

OMG y’all… there’s a whole bunch of these for different candidates across the country, just the name changes. I’m sure they’re all thrilled.

  20. That Other Jean says:

This deserves–in spades–the comment that my husband and I sometimes make to each other following a wide, but stupid, variety of TV commercials: “It’s not nice to make fun of your customers.”

    20
  21. It actually makes perfect sense to me as republican logic (oxymoron), and so typically stuck in the 50’s or earlier. Since their mentality is that young white women, especially those in college are all focused at getting married…that old MRS degree…this should directly appeal to them.

Playing the mother as an idiot also fits their stereotypes…essentially to appeal to youth, provide them the Edith Bunker-type personality to rebel against. I think both the starry-eyed young blond and the idiot mother are exactly what many a GOP person think of as the women of today.

Though Elizabeth, I hope no Rep campaign reads your post, I could see the scenario as exactly something they’d push out as emphasizing “family values.”

    21
  22. daChipster says:

Hey baybay! You may be saying NO to the candidate with your mouth but your body is saying YES YES YES, be my covenant patriarch to whom I can submit. Beacause, to a Republican, NO means YES.

So their internal polls show them getting 100% of female voters, and 124% of white males with small… egos.

    22
  23. This ad is an example of how out of touch with the times GOPTPers are, even the young ones. It was just last week that a study was released showing that for the first time in the nation’s history, most Americans are NOT married, and these tools come out with a campaign ad about a young lady who’s just itching to buy a dress which represents a choice of opting to vote for a GOPTP politician.

Whoever came up with the idea for this ad and paid good money to have it produced, should have their behinds kicked for showing how very little they think of women. When a woman has bills to pay all by herself, has to provide a roof over her and/or her kids’ heads, and is working at a low wage job, the last thing she’s thinking about choosing a wedding dress.

    23
  24. Susan (the Neon Nurse) Crites says:

One of the variations of this is for the Colorado governor race. The GOPs who made this pronounced their candidate’s name wrong!!

    24
  25. Perhaps what most attracted the Repubs to this theme is that wedding dresses are usually white. Just like candidates should be.
