No.
Those of you who have been around here for a while know that the only thing I like better than politics is baseball.
Women love baseball. You’ve got to be pretty smart to understand baseball and there’s not much gratuitous violence in baseball.
I am also an Astros fan. I woke up this morning and put on my Astros shirt because today is opening day and we’re playing the Yankees.
Do you want to know why the BASEBALL game was postponed? Snow. Yep, the Boys of Summer got snowed out.
In Houston today at game time it’s 76 degrees, sunny, with 41% humidity. Because we are an enlightened people, we have a retractable roof to keep out the damn snow.
Get with the program, fellas.
If it’s snowing, it’s baseball opening day. If you’re sweating your brains out, it’s football opening day.
Not all women love baseball. I think 99% of a baseball game is about as exciting as watching the outfield grass grow.
1A TWMDBS tent meeting SHOULD be held at the temple in Houston or the temple in Arlington. Amen!
2Baseball is meant to be played outside. In the daytime. It was a dark day for baseball when the lights were turned on at Wrigley Field.
Last year the first B1G Softball game between Northwestern and Penn State was scheduled on a Friday in March. It snowed so that game was canceled and they played a double-header Saturday afternoon. My feet were numb by the end of the 2nd game.
Minute Maid Park (nee Enron/TenRun Field) has a roof because the fans are too afraid of the heat to attend a game if the entire building isn’t air conditioned.
3Don A in Pennsyltucky is right . Baseball should be played outside.
4Same thing as football. All Superbowls should be played in open stadiums in the north. Buffalo, Boston, Chicago.
Philly is as far south as they should be allowed to go.
baseball is meant to be played under the sun and football is meant to be played in the snow and mud.
Cancel a professional sports game due to snow?
5That explains why a football is brown.
In the old days, the finish of spring training involved a series of exhibition games as the teams worked their way north with the good weather. Now that the owners have pushed the season into that part of the calender, they should play the first few series in the warmer or, like Toronto, protected parks. There is no glory in an opening day with no fans.
6I’d probably better not say this, but Colorado phenomenon like Peggy, Dr. Chaps, who was formerly both a chaplain in the navy, then later a Republican representative to the Colorado legislature from Colorado Springs and El Paso county ,are remnants of the Texas invasion of Colorado. We’ve got enough homegrown loony tunes
7No kidding, Don. Having watched games at the old Buff stadium (half way between Buffalo Bayou and Hell) and seen people literally pass out from the heat and/or get carried off by mosquitoes, I love a roof over my head. Minute Maid’s roof is generally opened by the third or fourth inning.
8It was 29 degrees in Pittsburgh yesterday for the Pirates opener. We also had snow, but just a dusting. Historically, opening day here is frigid and a testament to the faithfulness of the fans. I guiltily admit I am but a fair weather fan, but I do love the sport and have been privileged to see some of the greats play in person. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, too many to recount.
9And when Bill Mazeroski hit the only walk off homerun to win a World Series, in 1960, to beat the mighty Yankees, I stood on a downtown street on my way home from school. I can still remember the amazement at the confetti being thrown out of the office building windows and the cacophony of car horns blaring. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.
Some of us are “old school”, JJ, when it comes to baseball being played in domes. It’s bad enough that most games are played at night; but, Mother Nature still has a say in the matter.
10Are you braggin up that Houston taxpayers got shook down for a retractable roof to boot?
11@Miz JJ
12In my recollection of Buff stadium, it was located much closer to hell that the bayou. I guess I could be wrong….
Shouldn’t the New York team be called the “Damn Yankees”?
13I still don’t understand why the Cubs and Angels played an exhibition game at Anaheim yesterday (Sunday) when 1) other teams started their major league season and 2) the same teams will play in the same place tonight to start the regular season. Weird.
14Baseball in the snow. Hm. It could destroy the players’ visibility and make it hard to see the ball. Umpires wouldn’t be affected that much, since they rarely can see what’s going on anyway.
As for the Boys of Summer, doesn’t summer start in June?
15Anyone who likes baseball is A no. 1. My grandfather taught me that if I could find a woman who could make a lemon pie and knew the infield fly rule, my life would be complete.
16I’m a huge baseball fan. I’ve written three books about the game and there are a few rules I believe should be introduced/advocated.
1) The first game always should take place in Cincinnati. It is the birth place of baseball. Period.
2) under no circumstances should you open up in another country. It is our game darn it. In fact, let’s put the kybosh on international games during the season.
3) opening day should happen on a Monday and shall be declared a national holiday.
Mic drop.
17The Washington D.C. Nationals did an opening game today in Atlanta. Honestly. This actually marks them as smart. The A.M. temps in D.C. were pure Spring Has Sprung. They changed very quickly to rain and breezy chill and their gorgeous stadium here is open air.
18My Giants won big in the indoor opener against the Brewers.
19Had they played in SF, the weather conditions would have made for an ideal day game (plus ferry ride on the bay to-ing and fro-ing).
Play Ball!
“It was a dark day for baseball when the lights were turned on at Wrigley Field”
Agreed Don.
I like to watch baseball too, although softball is a better, more difficult sport. Either is meant to be watched on a hot summer afternoon. It’s important to drink beer and eat and spit sunflower seeds.
St. Paul, MN has a great independent minor league team. The Saints are owned by Mike Veech, son of the great baseball impresario, Bill Veech of Chicago. The Saints are immensely popular, operating at a profit for years because Mike is as nuts as his dad.
As JJ said, baseball is not so violent. It’s much slower than softball, relaxing, easy-going. It’s my favorite boys’ sport on tv.
My state’s Twins are expected to have a decent year with a winning record. They could even challenge for the AL Central Division title.
20BTW, since we’re talking about sports, did you know America’s women’s soccer team is suing US Soccer? Yeah. The team is wildly successful, winning international titles and the Olympics repeatedly. Their American tv ratings are much higher than men’s. Yet the women’s pay, benefits, facilities, travel accommodations and fields are significantly less than what the boys get.
When the women have complained, the organization has patted them on their pretty little heads and told them they should be grateful for what they’ve gotten. Left with no choice, the women have taken the male leadership to court.

GO GET EM LADIES!
21It’s no secret that it still gets cold in early April up in the frozen north, even with global warming increasing. MLB should be smart enough to schedule early April games in the south and in California, unless there is an indoor stadium on hand. It also gets pretty cold up there in October, for the World Series. If they really need to have the season as long as it is, then some scheduling changes should be obvious. But as long as they’re playing, I’m happy, even though my wife is completely clueless about the infield fly rule, and indeed every other rule. But the upside is that I don’t need to buy tickets for her. 😀
22Here in El Paso we’re watching our Tennis Channel (via Time Warner) broadcasting men’s tennis from Houston. Once a year for one week from Houston. Thank you all!
23If I get back from the doctor in time to write, I’ll have more but it is
‘
VEECK (as in wreck)
‘
not
‘Veech”
(and also GO METS, Astros, Royals and Pirates.)
24I agree with JJ. I’m ready for Astros baseball. Astros flag is flying.
However, MLB has this “thing”. Maybe a rule… maybe not. MLB holds on to a lot of “traditions”.
If you open at home one year…… in like 2015…… Next year…. like in 2016….. you open on the road.
Which is why the Astros were “snowed out” in New York.
Makes no sense to me either.
25Prup, my spelling error. But I had the pronunciation right.
