More Fun With Guns: Bad Haircut Edition
Okay, so we’re in Michigan today.
An unnamed 36 year old man was proudly showing off his handgun to a fellow customer or at least that’s his story. Â This showing off included a shot that went straight through the wall and into the body of a 15 year old at the pizza restaurant next door.
The kid’s gonna be fine.
The shooter, not so much.
The man who fired the shot was cooperative, police said, and gave them the gun.
I should hope so.
Thanks to Richard for the heads up.
See the problem here is that the person who committed the negligent discharge isn’t the person being struck by the life threatening projectile. I’m way ok when someone kills his/herownself foreplaying with their 2A-mmosexual toys. I’m way not ok when an innocent gets gunned down. Even if this chile recovers 100% physically s/he may never look at pizza the same way again!
1Tis the Season when,
2Wise Men bear gifts.
Idiots bear arms.
Tt his point I think all gun owners should be forced to obtain special insurance (just like car insurance) in case of “accidental” firings, death and dismemberment. Also a valid license, test and yearly inspection of all firearms. We do it for cars….
3And all gun buyers– since it’s politically too late for owners– should have drummed into their skulls that a gun should be UNLOADED unless you are just about to shoot something. And strolling into Walmart or drinking around the card table with your buddies does NOT mean that you are just about to shoot something. If you think it does, you need treatment.
4Lived in MI for many, many years. Dowagiac? Not surprised. I’m also not surprised that he went carryin’ just to get a haircut. I am surprised that this is actually getting as far as a prosecutor.
5The (linked) article ends: “Prosecutors will decide if any charges are appropriate.” How the hell could charges NOT be appropriate?
6Shoots innocent kid in next business place. Says “Oops”. Gives police his gun. He seems nice.
7I agree. Insurance should be required.
8Yes, insurance, but he should never be permitted to own another firearm. He’s a demonstrated idiot. And he should serve jail time for endangering the welfare of a child and negligence.I’ll bet he’s not a Democrat, Cruz.
9Arkansas Republican lawmaker now says he has regrets about writing the provision blocking gun control studies…blaming his act upon budget issues. Yeah, that’s why. Sure.
In a letter released Wednesday, former Rep. Jay Dickey (R-Ark.) disavowed his efforts to block gun control research.
Needless to say, Real America’s comments are SOP.

10This article illustrates precisely what needs to change about gun laws in the US. “Police say the firing was accidental, but are turning the case over the county prosecutor’s office anyway. Prosecutors will decide if any charges are appropriate.” In the same way that laws changed when we decided that drunk driving was serious and we didn’t like being around cigarettes, it should become accepted wisdom that firing a gun inappropriately is not an accident but a misuse of the gun and subject to charges. Whether or not you hit somebody. If you hit somebody, you definitely get charged. If you have a legitimate defense, you can present it as part of the legal process. And yes, insurance should be required. I think this will be a lot more effective than our previous attempts to limit what kind of guns people can buy. And yes, I own and have shot guns. Mine are locked up when not in use and treated with respect when they are not locked up.
11As a private pilot who used to rent airplanes, I truly believe an insurance requirement would go a long way. To rent an airplane, you need to satisfy two requirements, those of the FAA and those of the insurance company. The insurance requirements were much more stringent in terms of training, experience, and currency (as in when was the last time you actually flew the plane?) it would be the same with gun insurance, with real money on the line.
12It’s ridiculous that we’ve charged this far down the rabbit hole without licensing or insurance. That would be a lovely start for a well ordered militia, right? I mean, we send our nascent service members to basic training, boot camp, or Academies, right? This is all just idiocy, and if I can locate the article, I’ll post a link to one about an NRA lawyer that will curl the hair clean off your head! Then JJ can build you a nice wig, I guess! And these days when you are drunk and kill or injure someone who is not also culpable (jaywalking, etc etc), you face charges of intoxication manslaughter or intoxication assault-even if it was your acquiescent passenger! It is WAY past time we started addressing this like adults and stopped indulging morons like Cory Watkins. I have the right to live a life free of menace and intimidation, and that is what these wackos are all about: menace and intimidation!

I may have actually picked that up here, but I think it was a “what we are reading” from TPM.

15I really like your parallel.
I have operated Colt 1911s since the 1960s. I could probably still take one apart and put it back together by touch. I’m current on that type. BUT if you drop a revolver in my hand or an unfamiliar semi-automatic, everything changes. My confidence is much lower. I’m much slower, more methodical in handling this different firearm. I want to see no negligent discharges for a change. I want to see a change in the attitude of those who exercise the rights under the Second Amendment. And I want to see a change in the current mis-interpretation of the Second Amendment.
I prefer that they restrict their idiocy to shooting themselves in their teeny weeny . . . . Know what I mean?
