Mitt Romney Just Made Me Poor
I am not a rich woman. Sadly, up until 15 minutes ago, I thought I was. I have a roof over my head, a pantry full of food, the cutest little dog ever, a car that runs, air conditioning, a good set of pearls and so much crap that I have to pay a woman to come to my house and clean my crap every two weeks.
But, Mitt Romney just pulled the middle class floor out from under my feet and made me poor.
Here ya go. When trying to explain his tax plan, Mitt yabbered —-
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Is $100,000 middle income?
MITT ROMNEY: No, middle income is $200,000 to $250,000 and less. So number one, don’t reduce– or excuse me, don’t raise taxes on middle-income people, lower them. Number two, don’t reduce the share of taxes paid by the wealthiest. The top 5% will still pay the same share of taxes they pay today. That’s principle one, principle two. Principle three is create incentives for growth, make it easier for businesses to start and to add jobs. And finally, simplify the code, make it easier for people to pay their taxes than the way they have to now.
Does this guy have any idea what a school teacher makes? A police officer? A car salesman?
So the way I understand this is that Mitt won’t raise your taxes if you make over $200,000 a year. If you make less than that, you are so screwed. That way he can say he gave a tax break to the middle class – yeah, the part of the middle class that makes $200,000 a year. Honey, if you make over $200,000 and you’re in the middle class, you need to get a new accountant or quit wasting all your money on Beanie Babies and the Home Shopping Network.
Do y’all remember Bill Clinton’s speech about arithmetic at the Democratic National Convention? Mitt didn’t hear that speech.
Thanks to Robert for the first heads up.
Ah, JJ, you beat me to the punch. I was just about to link to this in the earlier thread. It’s just mind boggling how clueless this fool actually is.
1So… does Mitt have any idea how to help out the “poor” people who make under $200,000 a year, and who make up 90some% of the population? “The Ayn Rand Poverty Act of 2013?
2I was going to say that there’s a picture of Mitt next to “clueless” in the dictionary, but BarbinDC beat me to that.
After his comment of concern that Obama will “how shall I say it, say things that aren’t true” in the debates, I have concluded that there is NOTHING this clown won’t say.

3@Rhea: I’m going to be counting the smirks!
4Remember, this is the guy who in the primary dismissed his speaking fees as “not much money.” He made over $374,000 a year in speaking feeds. Someone who thinks that’s not much money doesn’t have a clue about the middle class. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/17/mitt-romney-not-much-definition-speaking-fees_n_1210522.html
5Thanks to “Smirkie Smirk”, my day has been ruined.
I thought I was doing pretty good…after all, I got a house that doesn’t leak, a car in the driveway that’s paid for, Internet access (the better to share my rapier-like wit with you peoples), and cable TV.
Now Thurston Romney III says I’m po’ ? Boy, I can’t wait for November 6 to get here, so we won’t have to hear from this waste of space EVER AGAIN.
6That is weird. Sorry. He thinks the middle class is anyone making over $200,000 a year? I think if folks can keep their housing and buy food without borrowing their parents’ credit card too often and once in awhile buy some clothes for the kids who grow at astronomical speeds, they are middle class.
7Anyone who makes around $30K a year, is single with little or no debt may just get along.
8I’ve been in the poverty level for quite some time according to this guidline and really knew that already based on _arithmetic_ and observation.
I am gobsmacked that this poor excuse of a man has so little clue about the realities of trying to _exist_ in this day and age nor any idea what constitutes the middle-class.
It’s funny what Mitt considers middle income. $250,000 puts you in the top 2%. So apparently Mitt thinks the middle class is 96% of Americans. Considering that about 15% of Americans are living below the poverty line, there’s about 13% of the population that’s living in poverty and also middle class.
Welcome to Mitt Romney’s America.
9I’m just going to predict… right here, and right now….
That:
“Out of Touch” is going to be the most used phrase in this country, between now and election day.
10I don’t think even he knew what he was getting at. Maybe he was saying $100K a year was not middle income because it was poverty. I’m sure he’d think it was if his income was reduced to that…….
11Y’all are missing his point. Folks making less than $200K are lower-class, as in “low brow” to him. The least you can make and still get a sniff of his rarified air is $200K, mebee $250K. Below that and you’re “you people.” No idea where high class starts, but I’m guessing it’s at least a million, but probably much more.
12The drill goes like this:
Lip smack, LIE, smirk.
Happens every time.
13@Nancy: I believe you hit the bullseye.
14Now I’ve remembered an interview in the Washington Post about ten years ago with Tom Clancy, author of novels that I’m guessing Republicans enjoy more than I would. Clancy, who had a full-size tank on his humongous lawn, said, in just about these words, “If you’ve never made over $200,000 a year, you ain’t ****.” He and Mitt would have a lot to chat about.
15Well, dammit! I also thought we were doing okay financially. We’re getting pretty old, but still, as my Dad used to say, able to sit up and take nourishment. Now it turns out that, on top of all the ailments that come with being old, we’re poor. Granted, we don’t own Truman (although I would like to), but we do own our home and our cars, eat and drink remarkably well, and are helping two grandchildren through college.
I fail to understand how any thinking person can’t see that Mitt just doesn’t get it, and yet, our best friends would vote for ANYBODY but Obama. It’s no use to tell them that they aren’t in the top 2% or even 10% in the income department. It doesn’t do any good to tell people that if they vote for Romney, they’re shooting themselves in the foot.
I only know that Democrats HAVE TO VOTE. Today at the grocery store there was a woman from the League of Women Voters who was putting fliers under windshield wipers encouraging people to vote. I was getting into my car, and she asked, “Are you a registered voter?” I said, “I am and I do.” In Washington State, only 60-some percent of people vote, and yet the state couldn’t make it any easier. We really HAVE to get democrats to vote somehow.
Okay, rant is over.
16I can’t wait for the debates!
17Well, Mitt is following the Great Republican Tradition of making folk that aren’t rich, worse off.
I honestly don’t know how people don’t see this. I have family members who blame all poverty on Democrats, and I simply cannot comprehend the lack of understanding that underpins this.
Anyway, only partially related – I didn’t know if you had seen this analysis, but it is sobering:
