McConnell’s Failure Risks War with Iran
Last Spring, Senator Tom Udall introduced an amendment to the defense appropriation bill that would have prevented Trump from taking any military action against Iran or its leaders without congressional approval. McConnell poo-pood it and all but 4 Repubs voted against it. McConnell even said that Trump had assured him he had no intention of taking action against Iran.
How wrong he was, and now Trump is taking us UNILATERALLY into a war with no congressional oversight. Huge mistake.
Suggestion for Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Steny Hoyer: once a week publish a list of everything ‘sitting’ on Moscow Mitch’s desk. Anyone found that old AUMF that has been laying around since the days of lesser Bush?
1All people who speak with Trump need a lie detector, and a record of the conversation with notated lies for future reference.
My next comment should not be taken as aiding and abetting the “enemy” but as a means for reducing tensions. I would suggest should Iranian leaders intend a response to Trump’s action, remember, this was Trump’s decision. Announce your plans for attacks only on Trump branded hotels & golf courses, in advance, so guests may check out & cancel reservations. Then as his business interests sit vacant like modern day ghost towns there may be an opportunity for discussions without bloodshed.
2I couldn’t believe my ears this morning when Moscow Mitch said we should all wait for the evidence NEXT WEEK before having an opinion – on this killing, not impeachment! I have a 14 year old grandson and I can just imagine a second term Trump somehow getting the draft reinstated.
And Rick #2 – I love your idea!
3The only problem with Rick@2’s idea: since Trump is (supposedly) the president, the Secret Service would end up securing his properties. E.g., if his hotel in Turkey might be targeted, Trump announces a state visit to Turkey where he intends to stay in his own digs. At which point millions gets spent to harden the site, to run all the employees through background checks, and to guard the place. All paid for by us. Maybe with money from further cuts in food stamps and medicaid.
4There’s no chance that Mcconnell was wrong! He simply and outrageously lied! He should be hanging by his toes in a public square along with the ghost of Mussolini!
5The Surly Prof @ #4,
You may be right, but I would only add that hotels & resorts cannot sit empty for long without affecting their bottom line, owners, or shareholders. Any response or “hardening” of properties would take time, and after completed would only remind guests they are staying in a war zone.
Also, insurance would most likely not cover the disruption. Even homeowner’s policies have exclusions for war or acts of war. Trump would have voided all of his own coverage.
6My idea of a worst-case scenario is Trump using the excuse of war as a reason to delay Presidential elections. He has a Supreme Court that would backup this traitorous idea.
7I would say that turning McTurtle into an ex-Senator should be the highest priority for sane people after turning Dotard into an indictable felon…
8Yes, mcturtle, Leningrad Lindsey and so many other Rs need to be retired in 2020. I just hope WW III is not begun in order to distract from the sorely needed impeachment. Does anyone @ the WH have a dartgun? A Mickey for Orange turds diet coke? A straight jacket? And the nerve and patriotism to deploy one or all 3??
9I’ll just pop this off topic but Texas related item right here – – if you have Hulu they’ve just added “Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins.”
“I dearly love the state of Texas, but I consider that a harmless perversion on my part, and discuss it only with consenting adults.”
10Agree with Rick on 2 & 6. Loss of insurance and loss of guests (revenue) and loss of employees will all take their toll – and will result in bankrupt properties. Cadet Bone Spurs will not go anywhere he deems dangerous – so he won’t be showing up at any of them. Looks like he may be hanging out at Camp David instead of Florida.
11I agree with not aiding an enemy, but if they did include Camp David, the Big Orange Toddler would be stuck in the White House.
12Rick @ 10,
i wonder what Molly’s take would be on this sh!tshow we have showing in the WH?
Damn, I miss Molly Ivins.
13Pulling out of the nuclear agreement was a dare.
14Sanctions were a double dog dare to Iran.
Red meat for MAGAs. A setup for exactly what is happening right now.
Let’s see what the morning brings.
Red meat for MAGAs because decades of conditioning to believe that talking tough equals strength. And the crucial part is, talking anything but tough is weakness.
15Kinda paints you into a corner.
Like now.
Best Idea For Starting The New Year
Get an envelope put a stamp on it, put 2 or 3 pieces of TP paper in it.
Then address it to
Moscow Mitch
Trump’s Boot licking Bitch
Washington D.C.
That’s just to help him wipe the brown off his nose.
Then mail it.
It won’t do any thing,
16But you will feel better.
McConnell’s first big mistake: believing anything Trump says.
Even if Trump wasn’t lying when he said he had no plan to bother Iran [by no means a given] the fact that he changes his mind in a heartbeat should have given McConnell pause.
Oh, wait.
17This is Lapdog McConnell we’re talking about here.
Never mind.
@rastybob #16 — be sure to send one for Miss Lindsey, and that Collins bimbo, too.
But I wonder—is tRump’s butt as orange as his face?
18Rick @ 10, thanks for letting me know about this movie. I’m going to use my free movie on Hulu to watch this today. I absolutely loved Molly Ivins and I’m looking forward to watching this today! Thanks for letting us know about this.
19Billyr. Somethings we just don’t to know.
20Combover Crime Lord has threatened to bomb 52 of Iran’s important cultural sites. Such an action would be a serious war crime, so the DoD has probably not provided him with a list of such sites. Nevertheless, it should concern all of us that he will very likely want to go through with it, including the use of nukes.
What worries me is how the military will respond when (I don’t think an ‘if’ is involved) he decides to go through with it. If they deny him, how will he respond? How will Congress respond to his response? It should be clear to even the most obtuse members of Congress that this is no longer a left/right, Democrat/Republican, or liberal/conservative issue. This is a right/wrong issue, and who will stand for the right?
What we do as a nation will determine our future. We have arrived at the critical time I feared would arrive, and it has arrived right on schedule.
