Love is Love, Period

It was a 5-4 decision but we’ll take it!

Houston’s Pride Parade is in downtown tomorrow.  If you’re anywhere in the area, you might want to go there.  It is always a blast and I imagine this year will be extra special.

From Kennedy’s opinion —

And on a note to those who think “traditional marriage” and abstinence is the best:  Your crown princess of family values, Bristol Palin, is pregers again and Newt Gingrich is still a whore.

Let the happiness begin again.

Be social and share!

Finally, constitutional rights are recognized. SCROTUS has almost become SCOTUS again. Hope Scalia’s doctors tell him to resign due to high blood pressure.
Hope this progressive bent continues on the EPA ruling.

    1
  2. Bristol Palin’s situation suggests that ‘abstinence only’ does not work, especially for people who say one thing and do another.

    2
  3. And Bristol has the balls to say she “doesn’t want any lectures!” As if she wasn’t making a living lecturing about abstinence.

    3
  4. Abstinence has never “worked” for normal healthy human beings. “Fertile” always wins.

    4
  5. Palin: “I do not want any sympathy.” That’s good, because I didn’t have any to give her. The Abstinence Only” campaign should ask for their money back.

    5
  6. Marcia in CO says:

Do you hear RWNJ heads exploding yet?

    6
  7. Ya know, after all that went into getting the results on health care and now this one, I am almost too damn tired to turn cartwheels, so I think I shall just lift a cold protein shake and wish everyone everywhere peace and prosperity!

    7
  8. e platypus onion says:

I don’t mind an occasional gloat, but this here grifting, liar deserves a lifetime of derision heaped on her.She can judge Gays but don’t you dare lecture this alley cat about morals.

    Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  10. Coprolite says:

I have been looking for photos of Republicans lying in the streets with exploded heads from yesterday’s announcement. Today I may not make it to work with all those headless corps lying in the streets.

The RW parade has been rained on, maybe there will be enough rain to wash away all the bodies and remove the stain from our streets.

oh, Bristol, how’s that abstinence thingy working. Premarital sex, or fooling around on your fiancé. Just another fatherless child. I am sure there are a lot of disappointed people, including that outfit that paid you lots of money to speak to young women about sex before marriage. that was a waste of money.

thank the Gods that it’s Friday.

    10
  11. Can’t stop crying. 17 years too late for me, but oh, the smell of freedom. Just wonderful.

    11
  12. I want to celebrate my Gay friends being able to marry and be married in any State but is it too wrong of me to want to see that guy set fire to himself?

    12
  13. buskyandme says:

    BEAUTIFUL!

No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were. As dome of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.
The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed.

    It is so ordered.

    13
  14. Let me state that as a moderate Republican (one who still have quite a few operational brain cells and delights in tweaking the so-called RWNJ’s that make up the rest of the party) I am quite happy with the decisions that have been rendered this term from the SCOTUS. That two people who are in love and wish to formalize their love, regardless of whether they are male/female, male/male or female/female should be something that is worth celebrating. And now that right has been affirmed hopefully in such a way that people realize that marriage is not a religious ceremony, but a civil one with protections that should extend to ALL who wish to engage in such.

Yes, we know the four curmudgeons wanted to impose their religious beliefs to maintain discrimination, but we are not a culture stuck in stasis. We evolve socially and morally, and what was viewed as moral centuries ago should not always be maintained and revered as ‘the only way’.

    14
  15. Aw, poor Bristol. Rick Perry says abstinence worked for him.

    15
  16. Ralph Wiggam says:

I can’t wait to see the idiotic backlash! Some really stupid things are going to be said by Republicans. And there will be a whole lot of laughing by Democrats.

    16
  17. Yes, #LoveWins. Congratulations to my LGBT friends and family!!!!!! I look forward to sharing your celebrations. I can’t help but feel some sadness for those who fought the good fight but did not live to see this day. We will lift a cup in your memory.

@ TalG – The four curmudgeons are not known as RATS for nothing.

    17
  18. JAKvirginia says:

The signs say “LOVE WINS”. Today it’s more than that. Today “JUSTICE WINS”. Congratulations, joy and peace to all.

    18
  19. I am elated at this decision, but, for the record, I think folks at the Pride march should have a care, because this decision may put the armed religious contingent over the edge. Quite a few of the fringe right preachers have been touting disobedience, both civil and otherwise, if the ruling went against their nonsense beliefs. Could be trouble.

    19
  20. Old Fart says:

Now, to all those yet unmarried, I must remind you (Fraulein Palin in mind):

Marriage is a human institution and like humans deeply flawed, and therefor a whooole lot of work. People change, and just hoping that the couple in the marriage will change together, in the same direction probably won’t be enough. I am very much the recipient of care and understanding from my wife during the long period of my illness when I was unable to change to better support where our family needed me to be. Patience and love helped me to heal, and to in turn become a support through future difficulties, and a recipient of future (& present) triumphs.

To all, in equality, I invite you to new possibilities.

    20
  21. Annabelle Lee says:

@Ralph Wiggam – so far I’m seeing end times, polygamy, polygamy, polygamy (they really like the idea of polygamy, I see), end times, Reagan legacy ruined, polygamy, SCOTUS appointments for life should be changed, and Christians should leave the country as it is now hostile to them.

Not particularly looking forward to end times but the rest is okay by me.

    21
  22. @Marcia in CO
And I’m deeply saddened we haven’t.

    22
  23. Hollyanna says:

Happy, happy day–can’t stop smiling! So sorry for the four sourpuss Supremes, but they’ll get over it…

    23
  24. Polite Kool Marxist says:

What a couple of days! SCOTUS recognized that health care is almost a right and that indeed yes, all Americans deserve equal protection under the law. The past couple of days have certainly sent me into a happy space.

Congratulations to the LGBT community for a cause well fought and an outcome you deserve! To be honest, at times the battle confused me. Then again, as a rule Republicans confuse me. The right to live and love; never understood how anyone could be against that.

2015, a “mere” 15 years into the century and suddenly we have some progress going on! Keep up the good work and Go Blue Texas!!!

    24
  25. Either the Media is not covering Rick Scarborough’s planned self fire event or he hasn’t done it yet.

I think the media is missing a great chance if this is so or Rick Scarborough’s threat is the same as Linbaugh’s, in the all hat no cattle department.

    25
  26. SomedayGirl says:

Oh fer cryin’ out load – Fat Tony says the decision is “a threat to democracy.”

And they say gay men are drama queens…

We have a more perfect Union today. Congrats, America!

    26
  27. Heartfelt congratulations to US of A from across the pond.

You won’t have to travel to Houston to enjoy the excitement tomorrow – there are abundant Pride celebrations worldwide: it’s the anniversary of Stonewall. Box Turtle Bulletin has a comprehensive list, including for the US

My favorite thing right now is RWNJs threatening to move to Canada in protest.

Boy, are THEY gonna be surprised.

    28
  29. Aggieland Liz says:

Hi Glenn and MarkJ, thinking of you guys and your compadres today, the first day that you may receive your full measure of justice! Savor the moment; I’m sorry that it has to be bittersweet Mark, but we have lived to see it! I cried a little too, but it was just happiness for my friends who are affected by this ruling spilling over!

    29
  30. About time five Justices read the 14th Amendment, even if the other four still haven’t.

Annabelle Lee notes that reactions include “Christians should leave the country as it is now hostile to them.” Those who think this is hostile to them are more than welcome to leave. Please take Scalia with you. Taking Thomas will be assumed, since he’s joined to Scalia at the hip. I’ll enjoy waving bye-bye while standing in a cleaner and better America.

    30
  31. Aggieland Liz says:

@Somedaygirl-yeah, equality is bad for democracy, Citizens United good, brought to you by the letters W,T & F!

    31
  32. Ralph Wiggam says:

Our Atty Gen. is going bonkers. This will be funny for sure.

“To be clear — the law in the state of Texas is that marriage is one man and one woman, and the position of this office is that the United States Constitution clearly does not speak to any right to marriage other than one man and one woman and that the First Amendment clearly protects religious liberty and the right to believe in traditional marriage without facing discrimination,” Paxton wrote.

    Need a good laff?

Palin is also listed as an expert on abstinence on the Web site of Single Source Speakers, a booking agency.

    33
  34. Ralph Wiggam says:

    Here is another one

“. . .former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee said: “I will not acquiesce to an imperial court any more than our Founders acquiesced to an imperial British monarch. We must resist and reject judicial tyranny, not retreat.”

    This is just plain fun!

    34
  35. UmptyDump says:

A happy day, but a word of caution is warranted.

At least for the time being, same sex couples should be especially observant of their surroundings. There may be certain zealots who feel that the Second Amendment confers upon them the right to personally oppose the freedoms affirmed by the SCOTUS decision regarding same sex marriage under protection of the Fourteenth Amendment.

In other words, watch out for demented ammosexuals.

    35
  36. AlanInAustin says:

Those upset with today’s rulings and who are railing about the Court redefining marriage best take care. It wasn’t all that long ago that the Court redefined marriage by striking down laws against interracial marriage.

Yes, Clarence Thomas and JEB Bush, I’m looking at you.

Now go back and do your rectal-cranial gymnastics to deny it.

    36
  37. Ralph Wiggam says:

And I love this quote from Mississippi

Jennifer Riley-Collins, director of the Mississippi ACLU, said . . .

“I pray that the state of Mississippi is on the right side of history this time,” Riley-Collins said. “Aren’t we tired of being last?”

    37
  38. slipstream says:

Wait– Bristol is pregnant? How could that have happened?

    38
  39. @slipstream, maybe she’s one of those medical miracles who “got herself pregnant.”

    39
  40. Annabelle Lee says:

@Rhea, a friend of mine snarked, “well, Bristol isn’t married but the father is, at least.”

    40
  41. THIS JUST IN:

[ Following today’s Supreme Court ruling, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) issued a directive on Friday ordering state agencies to “prioritize compliance” with the First Amendment and Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The directive states that agencies should make sure that nobody “takes any adverse action against” people “substantially motivated by sincere religious belief.”

“The Religious Freedom Restoration Act protects religious liberty not only in houses of worship—but also in schools, in businesses, in the military, in public buildings, in courts, in county offices, in automotive repair facilities, convenience stores, and at Chik-fil-A. These protections are afforded to all people, of all faiths,” Abbott wrote in the directive.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act sets guidelines for officers of the State of Texas regarding compliance with the Supreme court decision. In a pre-emptive sally, Governor Abbott asked the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals for an emergency ruling on the legality of the RFRA.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals quickly ruled Friday that the state’s requirement that County Clerk’s Offices meet ambulatory surgical center standards — which include minimum sizes for rooms and doorways, pipelines for champagne, and other infrastructure — does not impose an undue burden on a “large fraction” of Texas gays and lesbians seeking marriage.

Beginning immediately, gays and lesbians have to make at least 2 trips to a county court office for a marriage certificate – the first being for an ultrasound.  This is required to obtain the license for an out-of-church marriage.  We understand that requiring multiple visits makes things more inconvenient for same sex couples at an exciting time in their lives, as that is the intent of the law.

In addition to the law requiring an ultrasound at least 24 hours prior to a same-sex marriage ceremony, the state passed a law titled “LGBT’s Right To Know Act”  that requires ordained physicians to give couples seeking same-sex marriage state-mandated information about medical risks, adoption alternatives, and developmental stages of the relationship. This information must be provided 24 hours in advance of the same-sex marriage ceremony during the first visit when the couple receives their required ultrasound.

Do LGBTs need their parent’s permission to get an abortion?

Yes. In Texas and Louisiana, state law requires that the parent or legal guardian provide written permission for LGBTs to have a same-sex marriage. There are a few exceptions:

The LGBT can go before a judge and receive permission from the judge to have a same-sex marriage ceremony without the parent’s permission (also known as Judicial Bypass).
African-American LGBTs who are legally emancipated do not need to have permission from a parent or guardian to obtain a license for same-sex marriage. In addition to the preceding requirements, you will be asked to provide your emancipation papers, including two forms of government-issued photo identification, pay a small fee, and take a short test.

    3) If there is a medical emergency and the LGBT couple needs an ordained physician-prescribed medical same-sex marriage, the parent or guardian does not have to give permission.

Any further questions regarding the requirements of the law should be directed to the Office of the State Attorney General. ]

  46. Linda Phipps says:

As a woman married to a man for 50 years I can still say hurrah for all who wish to marry. I am happy for our gay teacher at my school. Justice Kennedy will leave a legacy of grace and understanding of our constitution and of the people affected by it, and he has built this over the years in deciding in favor of justice. I am happy for him, he will find a nice place in heaven.

Scalia not so much. Or any of the other resisters who claim armageddon on us because of something what gives honor to all Americans.

    46
  47. e platypus onion says:

@ Gay-Doncha know Levi Johnston and his wine coolers put the Virgin Mary to sleep so he could have his wicked way with her? It’s true I tell you. Ask Palins,

Linda Phipps, one of my favorite things that has been said all day:

Children born after 6/26/2015 will never know a world where someone can’t marry the person they love.

Justice Kennedy should be proud – again – today.

    48
  49. TexasTrailerParkTrash, too bad abstinence didn’t work for Perry’s parents either.

    49
  50. The tee vee news today reported that over 180 weddings were performed at the courthouse in San Antonio today. They had prepared for a crowd. The news reporter said a few may not have been gay marriages. I would hope they were all “gay” in one way or another.
