Long Distance Legislating

July 28, 2014 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Let’s say you’re a state representative in … oh, Washington State.  And let’s say you’re planning on moving to, oh I dunno, Ohio.

And now let’s say that state officials in Washington State, where you are drawing a salary as a state representative, discover that you’ve already sold your house and registered to vote in Ohio.

Nobody would be that dumb, right?

Wrong.

We’re talking Republican greedy and dumb.

Republican state Rep. Mike Hope resigned Thursday after it was revealed he’s been registered to vote in two states, Washington and Ohio, since last summer.

bildeBut there’ a semi-explanation.

A former Seattle police officer, he now works as a financial adviser with Morgan Stanley. He’s in the midst of a three-year training program that has him traveling to Ohio and New York.

Hope claims he didn’t know he’d registered to vote in Ohio when he simply moved his driver’s license there.  Moving your driver’s license to Ohio must be pretty normal for Washington State house members.

By the way, he also has a budding movie career, so he can undoubtedly pay back his salary.

Thanks to Larry for the heads up.

“A former Seattle police officer, he now works as a financial adviser with Morgan Stanley.”

    Former police officer, huh?

Remind me not to invest with Morgan Stanley.

  2. Sounds as though the Morgan Stanley training program has a course in ethics–sleazy ethics. And here I thought that only Goldman Sachs did formal training in that.

Check his arrest record. Wingnuts tend to be crooks that get involved in politics. Dems usually wait and get elected first.

  4. I ain’t buying this story. Just some more Rethug voter fraud which they claim is always done by somebody else.

  5. UmptyDump says:

Washington needs to retrieve every last penny of legislator’s salary and expenses this guy bilked the state out of from the moment he became an Ohio resident.

  6. See…….. “they” are right. (fill in the blank)________ on “they”.

There is some of that there “voter fraud” going on.

I looked up how to register to vote in Ohio. You MAY register if you just happen to be getting a new driver’s license. I don’t think it’s automatic, though. Long distance legislating, huh. I wonder why he got an Ohio driver’s license?

Maybe he thought he could just transfer his seat to Ohio! Everyone does it, right?

  9. Marcia in CO says:

    Washington State
    Ohio
Travels to New York … hmmmm …

Perhaps he will be registered to vote in all 3 states … unconsciously, of course.

  10. I thought you meant he was in Congress, a rep for WA in the Federal Congress. I could see why he has the time to live in two states and train for a new career, being as how Congress is not working much these session — But he is a rep in his state congress, so that doesn’t give him as much time. Nor as much money, so I can see why he has to train for a career change.

  11. I agree with UmptyDumpty. The minute he moved to Ohio he was no longer representing the people of his district, regardless of where he was registered to vote. I feel kind of bad, I moved to Mill Creek in 2011 and never heard of this guy.

  12. Oops sorry that’s UmptyDump.

Dang! I live on the eastern, red-neck, solid republican side of Washington State, and I never heard of this guy. Still, I’m never surprised when voter fraud raises its ugly head, there’s almost always an “R” after the name. Double dawg dang!

We of the blue persuasion are trying to change things in eastern Washington, but it’s a tough row to hoe.

Rubymy, I am a big watcher of the nuclear reactors and repositories that line the riverbank at the Hanford Site along the Columbia River, as well as observing the wildfires and other threats to eastern Washington. Please stay safe.

All those “small government” Tea Baggers sure scream, when their butts are actually on the line and want some big Uncle Sugar money. As my grandmother told me, those in the gulf wanting Katrina relief funds were the same fools that told New England to “freeze in the dark” during the 70s OPEC oil crunch.

There are wonderful people of all faiths who respond to emergencies, then there are the charlatans who are split between enriching themselves and/or Dominionists whose “faith” is less sane than the Jim Jones Guyana festival.
