The Texas Department of Public Safety – where you go to get an ID to vote if you don’t have a driver’s license – has a little surprise for you.

Oh goodie. So if you have a parking ticket fine you can’t afford to pay, you can’t vote?

Ain’t America grand!

  1. Just another roadblock to voting. If you scare enough people away with stuff like this (and who wouldn’t be scared) you can sit back on your big arse and know that you’ve saved Texas from the Demmycrats. Gah.

  2. When I googled Texas DMV checks voter ID applicants for warrants, this is what I found: a company that will help you zip through getting your voter ID. What ever happened to the Texas DPS and service?

Yep, if we can’t stop them one way, we’ll find another way. Gotta love those rethugs; they’re dedicated if nothing else!

  4. Snopes DOES say that it is FALSE that undercover police will arrest you if you try to vote with an outstanding ticket. Maybe whoever goes around saying that is like Mama who says if you don’t go to bed, the boogeyman will come and gitcha.
BUT I can’t spend all evening wading through all this stuff; y’all figure it out and let me know the facts, ma’am, just the facts.

Not that unusual. Last February, I couldn’t get my license plates because the court house declared I had unpaid fees from eleven years ago that pertained to my one and only divorce thirty three years ago. They blamed it on a new computer program.

  6. MargeWood–That site has a billing tab, which means it costs money, which is equivalent (in the case of folks who just want an ID for voting) to a sort of poll tax, which is illegal—no help for the exact people the rwnj’s plan is to prohibit.

    Seems fishy—but typical–to me…

    6
  7. @Margewood & djw: Betcha the site/business is owned by a Repug…

    7
  8. Bingo, the new version of the poll tax!

    8
  9. Gee, inasmuch as the two things, voter registration and tickets, seem to be naturally unrelated, it does look and smell fishier than 3 day old dead fish! Would love to hear what Bubba has to say about this on Constitutional grounds. Especially if the Supreme Court is too busy to one damn thing about all this voter suppresion goin’ on all over the country!

    9
  10. So glad y’all noticed all that! It’s privatization at its sneakiest. I mean, folks just trying to find out about voting find this place almost no matter what you enter, and it has a fee. Oh. And I also found that folks under 18 can get a license via those guys. Well, I thought Texas had a hardship license for all kids. Does it not still? Our oldest got his when he was about 14 because we lived on a ranch. These guys will do drivers’ licenses for any state. Ain’t that convenient.

    10
  11. I don’t have one, so I don’t know. But, I bet some folks here do have them, and will know.

Isn’t a passport a valid photo I.D. for voting in Texas?

What is the cost of those? Would it be more cost efficient, or not….. does anybody know…. one way or the other?

If they (the DPS) are going to get to making people pay tickets, or whatever before they can get a “free” photo I.D. to vote….. could be that we need to come up with a way around that….. if it’s possible.

    Just curious.

    11
  12. Of course if you are trying to find something in a gummint agency and pulling your hair out, you might like the idea of paying someone to do it for you. I always thought lawyers did that. Then you find DMV.org and its motto “The DMV made simple”. Wow. Like a spell check thingy which may or may not use the right word. The internet is full of stuff with big words that says YOU HAVE TO BE 18 TO READ THIS AND WE DON’T TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY TO SEE THAT THIS IS DONE RIGHT BUT WE’LL DO IT ANYWAY FOR A FEE. I think I’ll go back to bed.

    12
  13. There’s a story on the internet about two people in line at the cash register. The first one is a white, she easily gets to write a check for her groceries and is able to have a friendly conversation with the cashier. The second one is given the cold shoulder by the cashier and when she attempts to use a check is asked for 3 forms of ID and her check get’s a good once-over in the the “Hot Check” book. Now fast forward to a DPS Line, how much you wanna bet that you’re gonna get a good once-over if you want to get a Voter ID?

    13
  14. See, JJ, the problem is that you think you live in America. Actually, you live in Texas. According to the “Visit Texas” ads, Texas is like a whole ‘nuther country.

    14
  15. Dianne, Ohio is gettin’ to be exactly the same way. Now they are going to make it darn near impossible for working folks to vote. That’s the nine to five crowd. If you are independently wealthy, you don’t have a problem.

    15
  16. According to the website you google to get such information, a passport cost about $70.

So, obviously, we have to think of something else.

Such as educating folks to he fact that if they have unpaid tickets, or whatever, if they need a DPS photo I.D. to vote, best get them paid. If they have traffic violations, most probably, and hopefully the driver’s license is current, and needs to be kept that way. I’m getting way past the point where I just can’t stand the Republicans and the crap they pull.

    16
  17. You can get a gun license. That works for voter ID, along with, of course, your voter registration card which is still, so long as I know, free. Reminder here: if you have moved in the last year or changed your name or both, you need to fill out a new registration card. You can get a white one at the library or wherever and mail it in, or you can find someone doing the yellow ones that have a tab you keep that proves you registered to vote. I know that Travis County is doing voter reg. events at food kitchens this month. Where are YOU doing voter registration in your county? Also remember you have to have registered at least a month before the election you’ll be voting in.

    17
  18. Get out the word….. mail in ballots do not require any ID. EVERYONE with any kind of an issue should simply request a mail in ballot. Easy Peasy around their Sleazy.

    18
  19. Charging for voter reg assistance! just like the sharks who prey upon folks who don’t have the Internet, WRT Texas Unclaimed Property. It is worth their time to charge 10% finders fee to “help” someone get what is theirs using an Internet search and a form that can be completed & submitted online.
