Last Words: “We Messed Up”

December 08, 2020 By: El Jefe Category: Coronavirus

A retired Alabama state senator and former head of the state medical board of examiners has died of COVID.  His last words:

“We messed up. We let our guard down.  Please tell everybody to be careful. This is real, and if you get diagnosed, get help immediately.”

The senator, Larry Dixon, aged 78, contracted the disease at a social gathering, even held outside.  Several people were infected at that gathering.  Dixon’s wife is now also infected.  You can bet that no one at that gathering wore a mask.

History will not be kind to guys like Dixon and other Republicans who sided with politics and science denial rather than common sense and critical thinking.  Rudy Giuliani is paying that price right now as are many others who have chosen the religion of Trumpism and turned their back on science.

Be social and share!

For Republicans, if it doesn’t affect them personally, it doesn’t exist.

Old sayings have a lot of relevance. It’s a shame more people don’t pay attention to them. Case in point – ” Experience is a hard teacher… but a fool will have no other”.

  6. “Get help immediately.” Seriously?

As he was exiting, the senator once again showed us the bubble he was living in. HE may have been able to get immediate help but, when the hospitals are already full, his former constituents can’t get help for a burst appendix or a severely sprained ankle or an infected wound or a heart attack let alone find an open covid bed.

Thanks for the advice, senator. We’ll file it under “Believing six impossible things before breakfast” just like we did every other pronouncement about the virus you made before you became infected yourself.

  7. I find it to be some kind of miracle that most of these high profile Republicans feel good (or great), have no (or mild) symptoms, resting comfortably, following guidelines for staying at home, blah, blah blah. Naturally we know they are all being truthful, as of course they always are.

I am becoming very hardened to them getting the virus and think more of them should die so maybe, just maybe, others will pay attention. I feel bad that I have reached this point, but I have and won’t deny it. I’m so sick of all of this.

(I had better click on submit before I think better of admitting this.)

Mr. Dixon was the chair of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners for 35 years. I assume that he knew something about the field of medicine.

It is unfortunate that he used the word “WE” to partially absolve himself of personal responsibility for his actions as though he was compelled to endanger himself and others.

He really only needed to say,”duh!”

I always thought of myself as a rather kind individual but four years of Trump has hardened my heart to those who have supported his cruelty, vindictiveness, and casual racism. These nasty people will be with us long after Trump has left office. I have zero empathy for them.

  11. Someone mentioned elsewhere segregatng all the virus deniers who ae also anti-vaxxers from the rest of the herd. We really don’t have to worry about them. They tend to cluster with each other and generally have nothing to do with peole who actually listen and practice science. Yes, they are going to ocntinue to get the virus. Some will certainly die, thers survive even though they may be incapacitated for the rest of their lives which will statistically be shorter. So need to duplicate anyting in our history, certainly not all the unconstitutional stuff. Stoopid will simply kill itself off no matter where it is.

  12. While the Anti-sense fools are dithering, our 911 network nationwide is under severe strain. And it won’t be people with COVID who will be trying to call when they need help, and possibly getting none. It will be everyone. THIS is the nightmare scenario for this virus: Destruction of the healthcare/first response system…

Also, I’m getting a it skeptical about high-profile Republicans announcing they have COVID-19. They waltz through with mild/if any symptoms and come out the other side – “see, it’s no big deal”. I have two relatives who have had it, and it is a BFD.

  14. I have no sympathy for this guy and others like him that only come around to the truth while on their death beds. What about all the people they took out with them?

No matter what they say, statistics impact the just and the unjust in equal measure. Despite his zombie Twitter feed, Herman Cain died. Former legislators and older legislators died. Current legislators have been ill — and their experience seems to mirror the population as a whole, with most recovering to some capability to continue their lives.

  17. I appreciate Joe’s asking people to mask up for his first 100 days in office, but I have no expectation that far too many will not, especially, of course the deniers. Those of us who already are will continue, and in states where there are mandates (like mine), we will. My heart goes out first to healthcare professionals who don’t deserve the disrespect the anti-maskers are showing them. I’m linking to an article on those who don’t get any recognition on the news: lab workers. They are stressed, must protect against being infected against this virus, but keep on running those tests because they must do their jobs. From reading the article, it’s more complicated than you might think (I worked years ago in a lab, nothing like this!) My lovely niece is one of those in this line of work and directed me to this article.

  18. In my post #17, please take out the word “not” after the phrase “but I have no expectation that far too many will”. Too many double negatives, etc.!!!
