Jan Brewer or the NFL?

Times are tough for homophobes.  And Arizona Governor Jan Brewer even made the headlines of GOPUSA today.

And, there’s some pressure.

She’s under heavy national pressure to veto the bill from gay rights groups, but the opposition isn’t just coming from the left. A poll by the GOP consulting group Coleman Dahm for the Arizona Capitol Times released Tuesday showed that 57 percent of state Republicans, including Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake, favor a veto while just 28 percent want her to sign the bill.

So, when Jan vetoes the bill today, it won’t be because it’s the correct and moral thing to do.  It’ll be because it’s the right thing to do – and by right I mean 57%.

And then she’ll go out and find some gay person to shake her finger at.  Me?  Well, I’m going to buy a new iPhone, make reservations at the Marriott, and … hope Houston gets a football team next season.

Watching Loopy Louie play the logic game is equal to 3 cats on a Turbo Scratcher, but not nearly as much fun.

Seriously, did even he understand what the gohmert he was attempting to blather?

  2. Under the religious freedom bill do Muslims and Mormons get to deny service to alcohol drinkers? If you smell like bacon can you get thrown out of a Jewish deli? If you smell like an ashtray do Mormons get to say “No way!”? Can Wiccans deny service to cross wearers?

    Um, I’m going with NO!

    Dear Old Fart–
It all depends if they can convince the judge/jury that all of the aforementioned (“unclean, unclean!”) were violating their beliefs—sincerely held beliefs, deeply, honestly, held true beliefs–or something like that. It’s so (what I have come to expect from certain groups) poorly thought out that it’s like that guy who never thought of what it might be like for a woman to consider getting an abortion ($$$ factors, unmarried, far too young) no thinking involved..just knee-jerk mouths in motion. And I do mean jerks.

  4. If your religious freedom is based on discrimination, maybe the answer isn’t to write a law. Maybe the answer is to read the 10 Commandments and the words of Jesus.

  5. With any of these horrific bills, they are not vetoed because of their immorality and cruelty. They are vetoed because they cost money, business, and tourism dollars for the state. Bottom line IS the bottom line, if they made money for the state they’d be enshrined in the constitution of said state.

  6. It’s my deep, honest, sincerely held belief that I don’t want to do business with bigoted jackwagons. Can I get some protection for my sincere beliefs?

I once did a dogsitting job for a client after my boss told me the woman had told her not to send some black person to her house. (We didn’t have any black employees, as it happened.) I didn’t like it, but I went. That woman had so much junk in her house that I couldn’t find the sofa, and there was something rotting in her fridge. Her house was as ugly as her mind.

  7. I read a comment on another site (sorry I can’t remember who to credit) that wondered if Jesus ever did any business with Christians. Hmmmmm.

  8. Rubymay –
How about Christians who would do business with Jesus?
If this law went into effect, and Jesus walked into the store of a Christian proprietor who was allowed to refuse service based on his beliefs, how many would serve a middle eastern man with long hair in a robe?

  9. The almighty dollar wins again. Those Repugs have been shamed all right, not because they chose hate-filled discrimination in the name of religion, but because they didn’t think about the financial consequences. And we all know that should be the first and only Repug consideration.

  10. Dunno what Bill Marriott’s beliefs were…nor whether the family still owns the corporation…interesting that the company is willing to stand up and be counted on this issue. There may be hope for the rest of us yet.

  11. Saw bleach blond Brewer on the teepee. She said she was gonna go home and review the bill and think about it for maybe 2 days before she made her decision.

Here’s the kicker. The bill is only 2 pages long. Kinda makes me wonder if she moves her lips when she reads.

  12. I just saw that Brewer vetoed the bill. The almighty dollar has spoken!
