It Takes What It Takes
Let’s pretend there’s a guy named Clint Murphy who is a political operative. Let’s pretend he worked on John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign and Karen Handel’s 2010 Georgia gubernatorial bid.
Then let’s pretend he got testicular cancer and discovered that his sleep apnea is classified as a pre-existing condition and he can’t get health insurance.
That would be a real quandary now, wouldn’t it? If that were true. And, of course, it is.
He survived the cancer but now can’t get insurance, so Obamacare is looking better and better.
And so Murphy’s Facebook post on Obamacare last week, addressed to his Republican friends, was something of a surprise: “When you say you’re against it, you’re saying that you don’t want people like me to have health insurance.”
There is nothing like a bout with testicular cancer to bring focus to your life, Murphy explained over the phone.
How come Republicans never, ever want government to do anything unless it is them or their immediately family who is suffering?
Republicanism is just a political justification for being greedy. I am glad that Mr. Murphy got to keep his testicles. He’s going to need them to stand up to the greedy people.

Those are pretty much my exact words – why would you deny me or my child healthcare? It’s amazing how quickly most of them back down when you start pointing out all of the good things about Obamacare. Sure, there’s a ways to go to get it right, but we’re finally moving in the right direction. Once you get a reasonable conversation going the only holdouts are the ones who can’t pull their noses off of Fox news.
1Honestly, I cannot believe that all these ACA haters have NO ONE in their family or close friends circle who are benefiting from these changes. What selfish people.
2But, if you read the whole article this guy is a real dimwit. He changed his arty affiliation, but still supports the same Repugnicans who want to defund, repeal and otherwise denigrate the ACA
3My experience with the new insurance came when I was scheduled for a procedure at an “out of network” clinic. When I refused to go for the treatment I was told somewhat obscurely that there was a program that would reduce my fee from $365 to $72. When I signed all the papers there was one that explained it was the ACA that insured that I would not pay more than the $72.
4I have good insurance. I don’t need to buy any from the ACA, but I still got benefits from it. I’d say that was pretty cool.
Frankly, my dear, I’m surprised to learn a Republican has testicles!

6The Democrat lady I met today was going on about her 85 year old father in law who needs a colonoscopy and the Medicaid won’t cover it. She said he’d had his limit of those done. Anyone know more about that?
7Puh-leeze, folks, distinguish between Medicare and Medicaid! There is a lot of un-distinguishing going around. Who in the world told this senior citizen such stuff? There’s more to this story!

9Thanks, Maggie. I also got her email address so will try to find more. I tried to move the conversation to Medicare but she insisted he’s on Medicaid so I threw in a bad word for Perry at that point. I’ll try to get her to take a look over here.
10The thing that killed me when I read the original article was his comment that he will still vote Republican. You cannot deal with irrational people.
11An 85-year-old could be getting Medicaid to pay for nursing home care — which Medicare doesn’t cover — as well as Medicare. And I think there are other scenarios where seniors with very low income have Medicaid.
12Regarding Republicans who don’t want to do anything unless their family is affected: My husband and I have agreed that the Texas law against texting and driving will continue to be vetoed until a family member of the governor is harmed by a driver on a phone.

“Colonoscopy: Medicare covers this test once every 24 months if you’re at high risk for colorectal cancer. If you aren’t at high risk for colorectal cancer, Medicare covers this test once every 120 months, or 48 months after a previous flexible sigmoidoscopy.”
It may be that the man had one more recently than 24 months, or was not at high risk and had one more recently than 48 months.
15The health care “system” in our country is a joke to the rest of the developed countries in our world. Our neighbors to the north (Canucks) would not trade their system for ours. A neighbor of mine went to Mexico for a major surgery at about 1/4 of the cost on this country. It was very successful.
16I watched a relative morph into a paranoid, fire-breathing monster while trying to maintain health insurance coverage for her autistic children after her husband got laid off. And she still votes Republican. Does. Not. Compute.
17@Marge Wood: if that Dem lady’s father is anything like my 89 year old father, he is confused. What he really needs is someone to go with him to make his colonoscopy appointment or call Medicare for information.
