How ‘Bout This?
I do not know how the NRA is going to handle this whole “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” motto, but after the DA and his wife being shot in his own home where they had guns handy and the Mingo County Sheriff being shot in his car while eating lunch, it might be time to re-examine that philosophy.
A new catch-phrase: Not only should everyone be armed, they should keep their guns pointed at all times.
Might work.
The first DA gunned down in Kaufman County, Mark Hasse was described as a strong believer in the 2nd Amendment who habitually carried concealed.
1Does the new “keep guns pointed” now replace “shoot first & ask questions later?” Wait… did the NRA ever ask a question?
2I have read conflicting reports about a sheriff that was shot to death/or injured outside a court house in W Virginia.
I’m sure he had a gun on him.
Yes, an’ how many deaths will it take until he knows That too many people have died?
3kudos to Bob Dylan
What does it take to get the U.S. House and Senate to show some backbone and admit that they need to control the gun crazies?
4Apparently not little children massacred, but maybe the fact that even armed lawmen can’t protect themselves.
Since there are an estimated 380,000,000 guns privately owned in American and since there are at least three million certifiable nut cases out there (1% of our population) the new admonition is: Keep at least three guns loaded, with one cocked and pointed at all times and be sure to have your ear plugs in. If there is more than one adult in the family their 24 hour vigil can be shared so as to allow some sleep and tv time for the others. Or, you can hire at least two armed off duty policemen to be stationed at different locations around your home and place of work at all times.
5Our House and Senate are filled with worthless twits. The Kaufman County DA was known to “carry” at all times, even when he walked the dog. He was probably packing heat when he got blasted by 20 bullets standing in his own front door. Give me a freakin’ break!
Willllllll we ever EVER stop this madness?
And Ted Cruz…. ES&D
6Apparently they are more afraid of the NRA than of voters.
7Ah, Prissy! That is my daily devotional…Ted Cruz, ES&D. I am thankful for a soul-sister.
8Me too, Prissy and Shelly. And speaking of East Texas, how about the very well-trained, heavily armed Navy Seal murdered on the gun range by a PTSD shooter? And Wayne Lapierre thinks MY fat 61-yr-old self should wear a side arm to the high school where I teach so I can stop the bad guys? Pathetic.
9Maybe I am completely wrong (not the first time, not the last), but I don’t think a rational argument, an irrefutable proof, hard-core evidence, or a butt-full of buckshot is going to move our stupid (the “S” word, according to my 8 year old) congress off of this so-called “second amendment” poop. You can bet your best chartreuse boa that this isn’t about words. It’s about MONEY and PERSISTENCE. The NRA has both in abundance.
The gun sanity people just haven’t thrown as much money or as many hours into this fight as the NRA has. I know I’m guilty of letting other things crowd out this important issue on my check and letter-writing radar. But we can be pretty darned sure that the NRA zealots never let this issue off of their radar (or should I say cross-hairs?)
I think, until we can best the NRA in time and money, we are going to continue to be disappointed in the outcome of gun control legislation. Holy crap, we have work to do!
10VintageMomma–I was thinking a different kind of hairs, but mama won’t let me say that out loud.
11Splendid cartoon on the issue by Signe Wilkinson:

Polls have shown that a large majority of Americans, and even a majority of NRA members, want more restrictions, at least on buying guns.
Sample article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jul/24/poll-gun-owners-favour-laws
I would like someone to explain to me why the head of the NRA counts for more with the GOP in Congress than do a large majority of Americans. Do only the pro-gun people turn out on Election Day? Can the NRA money deceive everyone else into voting for pro-gun Republicans? What the hey is going on here?
12Rhea: It’s not just the Repubs. There’s enough Dems out there cowering from the NRA.
13I’m hoping that the shenanigans of the NRA yesterday at the National Press Club will at least start moving things a bit our way. I think they really ticked the press off. I suppose we have to find hope where we can.
We don’t need guns for protection. We need someone to invent a personal force field.
The person attacking will always have a huge advantage over the person being attacked. When the attack is done with a gun it tends to be quickly final.
14I keep wondering where all the good guns from the NRA have been during the recent massacres..
15I can only surmise they were running, hiding- screaming like all the other people.
Kinda hurts LaPierre’s theory..
Isn’t that just the pits? Most of our elected officials are scared to death of the NRA. The only defense we have really is the vote. It seems that Democrats don’t vote in every election — not just the big national ones, but any of the local or state elections. My husband and I vote in every election, but then, we’re retired and I guess have the “time” to do so. Where I truly believe our only hope lies is to get out the vote — not just sometimes, but EVERY time. Stop the gerrymandering, stop the corruption at the local level, stop these nuts from running everything. We just HAVE to get people to vote.
90% in the polls want stricter gun laws, but so what? I guess those people don’t bother to vote. As my husband has said for years, “If you don’t vote, don’t bitch.”
16I’m trying not to draw general conclusions about guns from this episode. The info at this point is too sketchy, plus Williamson is about as far off the Interstate as you can get in the WV/KY steep hills, narrow valleys and woods of coal country. It’s an isolated, insular community where outsiders are immediately spotted and regarded with suspicion. Not to put it down. Just saying that life in coal country is nothing like what most folks elsewhere would recognize.
17Probably the biggest lie in Texas is “Yes, I’m registered to vote!”
18I’ve heard it from three times as many people as actually voted in my burg.
I had to look ESD up – yeppers, I generally just say the actual words, plus have not gotten hyped enough on java yet to recognize cleverness.
If there is anybody else who is as slow as I am this morning: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=esd
Thanks, now I can use term more efficiently~
19One of the oldest maxims in politics? ‘Money is power and power is money.’
The NRA gets it’s power because of money. It’s money comes from the power.
Money can be overcome by power, alone!
20MCPO Ret, The second biggest lie is when someone tells an office holder. “I voted for you,” following an election when the office holder was not on the ballot. As a former office holder I heard that one more than a time or two.
21@Uncle Dave
22Ha! I Knew you couldn’t trust those voters!
That’s why GovDick of FL was trying so hard to keep them out of the booth!
These things are not preventable. That’s why the NRA has NO plan or program for prevention, only reaction.
When you apply 21st century technology to 18th century legal standards you end up with craziness such as the NRA and occasional mass murders.
And that’s the price we have to pay for the wisdom of our founding fathers.
(I’m not sure whether this post is more sarcastic or more cynical. I have a surplus of both and I get them mixed up sometimes.)
Did you hear that the NRA used to be in the horse business? They insisted that the barn door be left open at all times and when one horse escaped, the posted armed guards to prevent the rest from getting out. Now they are in the dog food business. OK, I stretched that metaphor, but I still like it.
23I’m new to the Houston area and need a little info.
24Where do I go or to whom do I call in order to find out where my local “well regulated militia” is located?
Surely they have meetings and such, being regulated like they are, right?
