Holy Damn Cow

I’m on the road but if this is true, I am freaking out.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s job running the State Department just got considerably more difficult. The entire senior level of management officials resigned Wednesday, part of an ongoing mass exodus of senior foreign service officers who don’t want to stick around for the Trump era.

Ms. Juanita Jean Herownself, it appears to be true.

“Tillerson was actually inside the State Department’s headquarters in Foggy Bottom on Wednesday, taking meetings and getting the lay of the land. I reported Wednesday morning that the Trump team was narrowing its search for his No. 2, and that it was looking to replace the State Department’s long-serving undersecretary for management, Patrick Kennedy. Kennedy, who has been in that job for nine years, was actively involved in the transition and was angling to keep that job under Tillerson, three State Department officials told me.

Then suddenly on Wednesday afternoon, Kennedy and three of his top officials resigned unexpectedly, four State Department officials confirmed. Assistant Secretary of State for Administration Joyce Anne Barr, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Michele Bond and Ambassador Gentry O. Smith, director of the Office of Foreign Missions, followed him out the door. All are career foreign service officers who have served under both Republican and Democratic administrations.” – Josh Rogin

  2. I don’t blame them I would not work for that A-hole ether.
I have been known to fire a boss, its easy to get a new one.

    2
  3. Since he’s put a freeze on hiring or raises for federal jobs, I’d just love to see the southern contingency of the border patrol walk off. Maybe they could help out on the northern side?

    3
  4. This whole thing is rapidly becoming the fustercluck we knew it would be.

The British term is “omnishambles,” or [look away, Mama] “We’re so effing screwed, we could be an effing screw.”

    4
  5. Fustercluck indeed. I think I just heard the celebrations from the Kremlin.

You guys realize the Trump folks are going to think this is a good thing, right?

    6
  7. I am surprised there’s actually anyone left at all that hasn’t already walked out. I guess this is what shrinking the size of government to fit in a bathtub looks like. Well done, GOP.

  8. Let’s not freak out unnecessarily. (There’s enough other stuff to freak out about.) I don’t think this is as bad as it seems at first glance. According to CNN:

“All four, career officers serving in positions appointed by the President, submitted letters of resignation per tradition at the beginning of a new administration.

The letters from the White House said that their resignations were accepted and they were thanked for their service.

Mark Toner, the State Department’s acting spokesman, said in a statement that “These positions are political appointments, and require the President to nominate and the Senate to confirm them in these roles. They are not career appointments but of limited term.”

He continued, “Of the officers whose resignations were accepted, some will continue in the Foreign Service in other positions, and others will retire by choice or because they have exceeded the time limits of their grade in service.”

Greg Starr, director of diplomatic security, also followed through on his planned resignation. He had come back from retirement after the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi and promised to stay through the end of the Obama administration.

“This had been on course for over a year,” another official said. “He came out of retirement and promised to stay out (of) the administration. If Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders were elected, he would still be retiring.”

My first thought is this leaves some pretty good job openings for Eric Trump to pick from.

  10. We are living in a society with far too many spineless, lack of character individuals. The action by these people is laudable.

    10
  11. The latest news is that they were, in fact, *fired*. Those were by appointment level positions, and the new administration knows best…

    11
  12. Old Fart is right. Thats how it goes. If you are not retained, that’s it. Once again, there will be no one to transition the newbies. Now if another consulate is attacked, its on them.

Just read where the chief of the Border Patrol quit, too. I’m getting more popcorn!

    Maybe Cheetos, too!

    13
  14. Trump after hearing that State Department officials walked:

“So, we need 50 new guys then, one for each state, right?”

    And his advisors will reply:
    “Yes. Sir. Mr. President.”

Rick: That made me chuckle. Good job.

(And yet, somehow, so plausible. Yikes!)

  17. Just in from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) = Chairman Norman Bay has resigned.

Yesterday, 3 of the 5 commission positions were filled. They were all Democrats since Obama did not fill the 2 Republican seats (the party in the White House gets a majority). Today, FERC cannot make quorum. This is the agency that must approve interstate and international pipeline construction permits (BTW, there are statutory requirements that no President can just waive).

Here is his letter, which touts the Obama Administration’s many accomplishments and mentions the importance of working with Mexico given our interconnected grids: https://www.ferc.gov/media/headlines/2017/2017-1/01-26-17.pdf

Eventually, the Republican Senate will fill the other 3 seats, but everything comes to a halt until they do.

Thanks, James Cargas, for the excellent resignation letter by Chairman Norman Bay.

It is too bad that trump will not understand it as it has way too many big multi-syllabic words in it 🙂

It is concerning to lose so many excellent people in government at this time, but I sure applaud their integrity in leaving now. I wouldn’t work in this administration either.

  19. Thanks, Fred Farklestone, for the article on gaslighting. Straight out of the past week’s headlines….

    19
  20. Rachel Maddow was scary in this tonight. Speculation that they resigned because of a draft memo circulating to lift all sanctions on Russian.

She also said mom-state Russian media is reporting the arrest of the person that leaked the Russian hacking of our election to the Western media.
If Putin arrested someone for doing it? How does Trump denied it happened?

Hey, I just ate half a homemade pizza, if I call it this (below), does that mean it’s a really healthfood? (I only have pizza once or twice/mo)
“The U.S.-based pizza chain Villa Italian Kitchen announced that they would begin selling a new zero-calorie #Alternative Facts pizza. The pizza is topped with with bacon, pepperoni, ham and sausage.[37][38]”
