His Tang Got Tungled

Okay, so I suspect you’ve heard that Matthew McConaughey is considering a run for Texas Governor. He hasn’t said which party but he’s starting to answer some questions about it.

He’s said that he’s “measuring” a run. I don’t know if he’s got a ruler, a tape measure, or spoons, but he obviously giving it some thought. I say that because he did an interview. When asked if he’s going to run, he responded —

To the hosts, he replied, “Well, thank you, man. I’m measuring it. Look, it’s going to be in some capacity. … I just — I’m more of a folksy and philosopher poet statesman than I am a, per se, definitive politician.”

He continued, “So I go, well, that’s a reason not to, but then I go, no, that’s exactly why you should, because politics needs redefinition, but I’m measuring, you know, what is my category? What’s my embassy?”

I don’t think per se means what he thinks it means. And as far as I know, the position of philosopher poet statesman isn’t up for election, and if it is, Willie Nelson is the frontrunner.

Good Lord, he’s Donald Trump with a better haircut.

The upside is that we’d have a fighting chance to beat Florida in the monthly Whose Governor is Highest? contest.

  1. Sounds like word salad to me.

  2. Methinks we need to pitch in and get him a shiny new set of bongos.
To keep him occupied dontcha know.
I’m fairly certain he’s got weed end of that equation already covered.
    Just guessing.

  3. Well… awright, awright, awright.

Don’t forget Don Huffines, who is also a R running for TX Governor.

” ‘Texas needs a leader like Bolsonaro,’ says the Republican candidate for governor trying to run to the *right* of the Republican incumbent Greg Abbott.”

Populist authoritarians like Bolsonaro are seemingly catnip for the GQP nowadays. Apparently, those in the TX primary against A-butt will be all in that camp. Will that make a word-salad-master actor like McConaughey stand out? Not that we need another b-actor turned politician (Ronnie R., 45).

  5. G. Foresight, they won’t even buy furniture in Arizona from a store named Unpainted Huffines.
At least that’s what I heard from Nathan.

Nope. We, and especially not Texas, don’t need another muddle-headed, word-salad-spewing actor without a whole lot of brain power, in government, if he is a philosopher-poet. On the other hand, we don’t need a Bolsonaro wannabe, either.

Is there anybody sane in Texas who would like to run for Governor? Oh, yeah–Beto O’Rourke is thinking about it. Go, Beto!

The Beauty Salon’s blog needs an “edit” button. Make that “even if he is a philosopher-poet”.

Sorry this is a downer comment and off this topic but it’s all I can think of right now. I hesitated about this but since we’ve talked so much about covid and anti vaxxers, I need to provide a dose of reality here. My unvaccinated sister in Idaho went to the emergency room yesterday morning with covid and passed away there after 6 hours or so without being admitted into the ICU. Obviously I’m grieving over that and makes me sad that my last conversation with her 10 days ago was over vaccines. By that time it was too late even if she had changed her mind. Unfortunately both her daughter and grandson who lived with her also unvaccinated, have it as well. He brought it into her house. Bad weekend. Sorry again.

  9. I suspect of the two, namely Beto and the Alright-Alright-Alright Kid, the former is the only one who’s actually read philosophers and poets.

  10. Steve from Beaverton @ 8,

May I offer my sincere condolences for the loss of your sister.

I’m sorry to read about the death of your sister, Steve. That must be very hard on you and the rest of your family, no matter what your politics are. I hope the family members who lived with her and are now sick recover their health without complications.

@Steve from Beaverton – I’m so sorry about your sister, and I do hope her family recovers.

I learned yesterday that my in-laws (who I love dearly, and who have health issues that put them in the high-risk group, but don’t have the sense God gave geese) aren’t vaxxed “because there’s evidence on both sides of the vaccine debate.”

We cannot protect those we love from themselves.

    Stay safe and healthy, everyone.

  16. @Steve from Beaverton–I am so very sorry for your loss. I sincerely hope her daughter and grandson recover.

I am very sorry about the loss of your sister. I remember reading your comments about trying, unsuccessfully, to convince your relatives in Idaho to get the vaccine. It is very frustrating. Hang in there.

    17
  18. Steve, speaking for myself, I’m very sorry for your loss and hope your niece and her son do as well as possible after losing their mother and grandmother.
But I’m not sorry at all that you felt like sharing it here.

That is horrible news. FWIW, you and your family will be my prayers.

  20. charles r phillips says:

My guess is, what Texas needs is a whole lot fewer philospher-poets and a whole lot more capable, middle-of-the-road Democrats with experiance in goverment to run for office. The hell with electing another “Doctor Feelgood.”

Sorry to hear about Steve’s sister, and I hope the rest of the family survive.

    20
  21. Steve, so sorry to hear the terrible news about your sister. I always enjoy your comments here at the beauty salon. You tried your best to convince her to get vaccinated. That’s about all one can do these days. Take care.

    21
  22. @Steve #8 – I am holding you and yours in the light. I am so sorry for your loss.

  23. Grandma Ada says:

Steve in Beaverton, my condolences. My Austin area daughter won’t get vaccinated and I’m just waiting for THAT phone call.

On the Governors race, I think most people I’ve talked to would prefer a turnip to Abbott, but as a Democrat, I’d prefer someone who has actually shown up for Texas. McConaughy is just playin’ with folks.

    23
  24. Steve from Beaverton says:

Thanks to all of you at the salon for your kind words and thoughts.
A silver lining is that my brother in Boise, my only sibling, is now talking with me (several times a day) after months of silence. He, too, is unvaccinated but I’m hoping that he will decide to get vaccinated. He may not tell me but that’s ok.
Again, thanks everyone and stay safe.
