Hey, Yankees!

January 21, 2014 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

They told us that we might get snow on Thursday night.  The last time we had a big snow here – 3 inches on the ground – was 1973.  The entire town closed down.

Anyway, they took it back today and said it *might* get to 31 degrees.  And it *might* even rain.

So, let us know where you are and how you’re doing.  If you send pictures, I’ll post them.

Stay warm.

Be social and share!

As a smart Houstonian once said, the best thing about winter here is watching other people’s winter on TV.

    1
  2. We are not getting any snow. But -4 degrees now with a wind chill of -21! Supposed to go down to -18 with I-don’t-know-what kind of wind chill.

No pictures, just hurts to breathe when outside.

    2
  3. Its been snowing since about 9:30 AM today in the D.C. metropolitan area. There is wind and random whiteouts. Predictions are that it might stop around 11 PM. Everything was closed today. Temps had dropped terribly before the snow fell and the temps tomorrow will be just as bad. Must go to work despite conditions. (Can’t wait to discover oil in the back yard so I don’t have to worry about the bills!) As for pictures, due to the blowing snow, they wouldn’t be very good. Enjoy the ones you see on the telly. I love snow. I was dancing on my toes when it started. Baked a pie to celebrate the occasion!

    3
  4. We were told we might get freezing rain or sleet here in Austin (as of a newscast yesterday), but that it was just a chance.

    4
  5. Up here on the west coast of New York, NOAA is predicting no degrees of temp. In fact they may make us owe them 4 degrees before the night is out. But no snow as the snowbelt has moved to the east coast.

    5
  6. Just outside of Boston we’re getting cold, fluffy snow @ 1-2″ over the last hour/hour-and-a-half. Well, take it slow & we’ll all get home; going is easy, stopping is hard…

    6
  7. If anybody wants to follow the snow reports, with photo links, in the DC area:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/

On the radar, northern VA to Boston, more or less along I-95, looks like the major hit.

    7
  8. W. C. Peterson says:

It’s still snowing and blowing in central Maryland (half-way between Baltimore and Annapolis) We could get the forecast 8 inches before it’s done. The neighbor and I have scheduled snow blower races in the morning. Our common driveway is 0.2 miles long — uphill all the way.

    8
  9. I’m in New York City where it’s been snowing heavily all day. There’s at least a foot on the ground now and it’s expected to snow all night. We will get up to two feet by tomorrow morning. The temperature’s going to be in the single digits for two days as well. Our local photographer Inga Sarda-Sorensen tweeted a photo of Brooklyn Bridge in the midst of the snowstorm:

    9
  10. Boring here….quiet, clear, and MINUS 3! Grrr. Winter can’t end soon enough for me….

    10
  11. Marge Wood says:

Wow. Look at all them northerners! Minor tidbit: did y’all know that Long Island is in the same planting zone as Abilene, Texas where I am not, tonight? I heard that Pennsylvania had a whompin’ huge snowstorm, snowed in a first time mama and her baby with the aunt and who knows who else.

My standard response to weather is GET FOOD. Gotta run get some groceries since y’all are having such blizzards.

    Marge in Austin

    11
  12. Marge Wood says:

Oh, and toilet paper. Be sure you stock up on toilet paper, and batteries and graham crackers. Can’t survive a blizzard without those.

    12
  13. Hippie in the Hollar says:

Back is out and losing my mind due to meds. Sent the Northern Kentucky report to the tell Miz Juanita mailbox.

Any ways temp is 9 with -7 wind chill. Have about 2.5 inches of snow on the ground.
Work nights, should be fun clearing off the mini van with the bad back. Taking my broom out with me….blink, blink. To sweep the car off- not to ride. Too damn cold to ride my broom tonite. Meds, remember I said meds.

    Happy Hippie in the Hollar.

    13
  14. Southern CT- view from Amtrak windows is like flying through clouds. Cars had to be emptied because the vestibules were filling with snow. 13 degrees with <0 wind chill and should have 10" by morning. School's closed- whoo-oo (kids don't know teachers are even happier than they are).

    14
  15. Was 80 ish here today. 72 degrees now.

    15
  16. That would be Los Angeles.

    16
  17. In the F’Fort area of the Bluegrass we have 5″ & 9 degrees F @ 20:15. Expecting 4 degrees F @ daybreak.

No photos; snow isn’t that unusual here. We also need about 5 days of 10 degrees F and below to kill the fungus on our vines so they’ll have have tender shoots & grapes. Can’t make good wine from mediocre or poor grapes.

    17
  18. Seeing as we are playing oneupmanship it is 102 here (Brisbane Australia) and I have NEVER seen snow in my 64 years. If you canpackage some up I’ll send you my postal address 🙂

    18
  19. I forgot to mention that it is 42% relative humidity, I am “baby sitting” 2 of my teenage grand daughters and they have a pool, but when one stands up it is hard to tell where the water ends and the moisture laden air begins

    19
  20. Here in Pittsburgh, we’re having our second go-round with the polar vortex. The air temp is going down to zero tonight with wind chills way below. Had about 3 inches, but windy. Went right through my jeans and longjohns. Have taken to wearing ski pants over everything. Poor dog (and I) has to go out 3-4 times/day. Just hoping he doesn’t freeze solid while relieving himself. Made big pot of white bean soup and will let all faucets drip.

    20
  21. Elizabeth2 says:

It seems wrong. I’m visiting the Significant Other in northern Vermont – everybody who doesn’t want snow is getting it, and the ski areas, which are crying for it, are clear as a bell. Fifteen to twenty below here, which is cold even for a Vermonter, but not a flake. We did four runs today and gave up.
    It’s
    just
    too
    damn
    cold.

Last time I saw snow in your ‘hood, JJ, was at Christmas five or six years ago, when there was a dusting in Houston and eleven inches on the beach at Galveston. It was gone by noon the next day, but it was interesting while it lasted.

    21
  22. I’m with Barbara. The weatherman last night said we’d be cooling down today – from 85 to a mere 80. Actually 76 and cloudy here in Ventura County, Calif.
On a more serious note – all the snow falling back East leaves California (and the West) in severe drought conditions. So I’m not feeling smug about our weather here.

    22
  23. Carmen Piranha says:

    Michigan…. ah, Michigan. Currently 9° F.

I live in a little burg on Lake Michigan that gets lots of lake effect snow. I had to move about 10″ of it off my Jeep before I could go grocery shopping today. Two treats in one! I could have just screamed, but inhaling enough air to do it would have probably frozen my lungs.

    23
  24. I’m in Panama on the Caribbean coast until the first of April. Today was cloudy with occasionally misty rain, and it’s a comfortable for sleeping 70 degrees tonight.

But I’m paying for the weather, because I spent two nights getting bit by bedbugs in a hostel, and now my body has reacted by breaking out in hives.

Sigh, there are always trade offs.

    24
  25. It’s a balmy 3° in Iowa City. Anytime we are above zero in January it’s a bonus. But I leave for 5 days in Kauai on Sunday so it don’t make me no never mind.

    25
  26. I went to the store today to get supplies to make dinner if I needed to. It’s Restaurant Week in DC and we made reservations for a very nice place just up the street. It is normally considered a “destination” restaurant, but not tonight. Only the locals who could get there on foot managed to enjoy the fabulous food at a discount. Tomorrow, however, is supposed to be even colder than it was a couple of weeks ago and, unlike then, there is snow on the streets and sidewalks that is going to be nothing but ice by morning. I’m just glad I don’t have to go out into it.

Spring cannot get here soon enough for me!

    26
  27. Central Minnesota: -4°F with light snow. I don’t run in the winter because of ice, but the dog and I still went for a nice 1.5 mile walk.

My brother and his family lives in Houston. He calls to rub it in during January and then I remind him of the lovely weather we have in August (average high of 80°F.)

    27
  28. Gosh I feel for y’all get bad weather
Here in north eastern Dallas county, Texas it is clear and 37 F more or less.

    28
  29. maryelle, good luck to you and your dog. That’s another reason why we have cats.

Saw a photo of a gray tabby with wide eyes outside in the snow, captioned, “My pee froze– and I wasn’t done yet!”

Looks like we’ve got about 6″ and still snowing just outside the NE corner of the Beltway in MD, and 16°.

    29
  30. UmptyDump says:

Currently it’s 2° and wind chill of -12° 20 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, with a low of zero forecast for tonight. Dog will need a walk soon. I’ll be okay but Micki is a greyhound who is okay with her winter coat, but needs boots whenever the temperature drops below 10 above. She hated them until the last cold snap a couple weeks ago – when she kicked one of them off and almost froze her toze. Who says dogs don’t learn quickly?!

It’s been clear here, but just 20 miles east they’ve gotten 16 inches of lake effect snow today with the wind sweeping out of the north down Lake Michigan. Everything is totally snarled east of the Indiana state line.

    30
  31. Jean Kuhn says:

We have about a foot of snow here in New Jersey. All is well in our little corner of the world. Moved to a condo a while back and we pay a fee but WOW all kinds of equipment outside clearing the roads and walkways. Used to do it all myself because my old man was always away and working and sure am glad not to be out there in 10 degrees shoveling the driveway.

    31
  32. Well,

It’s cold enough to be fluffy, but not too cold to snow.

    32
  33. TexasEllen says:

Tomorrow we have to put out three round bales for the cows because the weather site says Jarrell can expect:

Thursday A 20 percent chance of light rain. Cloudy, with a high near 40. North northeast wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Thursday Night A chance of rain and sleet before 9pm, then a chance of sleet between 9pm and 10pm, then a chance of snow and sleet after 10pm. Cloudy, with a low around 23. North northeast wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Friday A slight chance of snow and sleet before 11am, then a slight chance of rain and sleet between 11am and noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. North wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Friday Night Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Light southwest wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening

Poor cows. I’m making venison stew.

    33
  34. The foothills of Northern California are sunny and about 70 degrees in the daytime, but cool to the high 30s at night. We’ve had very little rain this winter (our summers are usually dry). The garden is confused and I’m worrying about how we’ll handle the drought this next summer (and possibly for years afterwards). We’d be happy to take some of that snow off your hands.

All the talk about climate change has tended to leave out its effect on our food supply. I suspect that is going to change.

    34
  35. Catherine D. says:

Here in the Finger Lakes of NY, it was -17 (actual temp) with a wind chill warning. Schools closed so the little darlings wouldn’t turn into popsicles, but frankly, it wasn’t that bad when I was waiting for the bus. No snow, for a change.

    35
  36. -25 with windchill this morning. Not going to my quilting group, staying home with a blanket and cat on my lap.
Said cat will not go outside and has decided to use the litter box.
Which he rarely does. He likes to go outside and defend his turf from squirrels and birds. Just doesn’t care enough this am!!!!

    36
  37. Ralph Wiggam says:

I was in Chicago (Chiberia) for the last vortex, down to about -17. I vowed that I would never visit another place where the temperature starts with a hyphen.

Right now Chicago is a balmy 7 degrees warmer than in Deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay) Alaska on the North Slope.

But in McLennan County, Texas, it is in the mid 30’s and we are expecting a hard freeze tonight. Maybe as low as 25.

So next time you laugh at our Gomherts and Perrys, remember, Satan is so close to them the snow won’t stick when they are around.

    37
  38. I’m up in NYC to help my sister and brother-in-law celebrate their anniversary. The news says there were 12 inches of snow in Central Park, but the sidewalks are clear and the subways are running and the city schools are open. Of course, I saw a lot of hardworking people last night with shovels and snow blowers making that happen. There’s another polar vortex and it’s not supposed to get above freezing until after I go home to Austin.

But, on the bright side, there aren’t any damn cedar trees putting out poisonous pollen up here.

    38
  39. VeeGee in VT says:

Clear, sunny and cold here on the West Coast of New England. We got a puny 3 inches of snow on Monday. It’s -11 degrees with a night expected of 0 today.

If Massachusetts and Connecticut could send some snow our way, we would be grateful.

    39
  40. VeeGee in VT says:

Well, I mean a HIGH of 0 degrees expected, not a night of 0, God forbid.

    40
  41. Miss Prissybritches says:

Trust me…if we got a whole lot of snow…like a foot or so… Abilenians would jump for joy, go out and play in it. Zero precip for the year so far, down almost 3 inches from the average for 2013… just gonna go down to about 17 tonite, hit the 30’s during the day. But then there’s the winds. 30 x 30 with 30% humidity is ugly.

    41
  42. Well,

We lucked out: all fluffy and not enough wind to move it back to where you took it from. Props to our consortium of private and “socialistic” organizations that kept our house warm & comfy 😉

    42
  43. Here in the North Carolina foothills of the Blue Ridge the high might be 30 today. We are still factoring for wind chill. The low tomorrow night… 6. The mountains got snow, Greensboro and Raleigh got snow, we got nothing. I’m not complaining.

    43
  44. Sam in Kyle says:

Whenever I’m talking to our relatives near Green Bay, WI I always talk about our brutal winters in South Central Texas. I can hear the laughter right after I give the temperature “38 degrees”.

    44
  45. If we are lucky and it goes as predicted, here on the eastern slope in Colorado we are expecting snow tomorrow with temps 27 degrees, then a warming trend to the 50’s. Today the high should be in the 40’s. We sorely need the moisture.

    45
  46. Mom Nature not only abhors a vacuum she is also a great equalizer, if temps are too low in one area (polar vortex), she elevates them in another (the West Coast and Australia for example), to balance things out. Drought in one area will equal heavy rainfall in another as Mother Nature tries to restore balance.

It should undeniably have been called climate change. Alas, LynN, the impact on our food supply is already being felt in other parts of the world, that’s why there have been food riots over the last few years, particularly in third world countries and densely populated areas. “Coming soon to a theater near you” food and water wars. I hope I’m wrong about this.

    46
  47. Kary in Frederick, Md says:

Forty minutes from the home of MY president Barrack Obama and Michelle Ma Belle. 7 inches snow yesterday. Clear today…woke up to 2 degrees. I HATE winter! These temps are NOT typical….brrrrrrrrrr.

    47
  48. Deep in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, we have 5 inches of snow and 7 degrees this morning. We expect it to warm up to 27 today…then some more snow tomorrow. So over it. Need to go visit my grandkids in Collin County! It is definitely warmer than here and probably not much redder.

    48
  49. JJ
You may have jinxed us. There is a chance for freezing precip in Houston for Thursday night and Friday morning http://blog.chron.com/weather/2014/01/wake-up-weather-arctic-blast-coming-thursday-winter-storm-possible-thursday-night/?cmpid=hpfc#17910101=0 This city (myself included) does not know how to drive on ice. Luckily, it should clear up before the fundraiser on Friday night

    49
  50. fierywoman says:

Here in Kirkland (just across the lake from Seattle; yup, it’s the Costco Kirkland) we’ve had days of no rain, very little sun (which is the very hard thing about winter here) and temps in the 40s and 50s.
Despite the lack of sunshine, I must say: EVERY time I enter JJ-land, I smile and sometimes even LOL !
