Here’s The Deal
I’m leaving for the Democratic National Convention this week. Have I mentioned that I’m a delegate? Elected, mind you. By people in 21 of the best counties in Texas.
Ole Bubba and I are driving there so we can stop at the Clinton Library, eat barbeque in Memphis and drive through the Smokey Mountains. We are driving back through New Orleans. Yes, my friends, it is a party.
I will post as I have time. I will even try to post from my iPhone so you can see pictures from the convention. If you’re really anxious to see what I’m wearing and all, you can LIKE Juanita Jean’s Facebook page by clicking right here. This is my first try at this so I’m not promising perfection. Well, except in eye shadow colors. I am pretty prefect at that.
While I’m gone, I’m going to let the hired help write the website. You will see postings from TexasEllen, KellyBee, Sam Formerly From Pearland now from Kyle, Don A., Barb in DC, and Da Chipster. They have promised to keep it clean, but I know them all and they do have a tendency to get drunk, nakkid and swing from the rafters.
Y’all try to be good while I’m outta here and don’t forget that Miss Marsha will be tending the house and Truman while I’m gone. She’s a retired parole officer and clips coupons for ammo. Do not mess with her.
JJ, I can’t think of anyone who is more deserving of delegate status than you are. Have a wonderful time and remember that it is OK to hoot with the owls as long as you can still soar with the eagles.
1I’m a Canuck and I loved the Clinton Library.
2Be aware………
What they call barbecue in Memphis is quite a bit different from what y’all are used to in Texas. For one thing, they think barbecue means pork. For another, they put sauce on the meat.
But it’s all good. Can’t really go wrong wherever you go, but I’ll recommend the Germantown Commissary.
3Have fun! Safe journey.
4Have a great time!!
5Susan, have a fantastic time and eat some BBQ at Corky’s for me!
6Have a fun time and kick butt but remember that I have not financially recovered from Bush I and II. What that means is don’t call me to go your bail!
7Have a wonderful time!
8You are my delagate of choice…even if I live in Upstate NY/California, and I’m looking forward to what pithy and choice statements you may get out, plus, you are leaving us in good hands, so we’ll party here as well!
Just have a good time and drive carefully, we love you and want you to be safe..
JJ, wishing you a wonderful and fulfilling trip to Charlotte.
Be careful of BBQ in the Carolinas. They call it North Carolina BBQ but, honey, it ain’t nothing like you get in Memphis or at Joe Cottons in Robstown. It is marinated in vinegar for months (?) and then chopped into a string-like consistency and proudly served with coleslaw that even a goat wouldn’t eat. Try it at your own risk, but you were warned.
Bring us back a winner.
9Gene, Carolina barbeque is the most gosh awful thing I ever put in my mouth and I’m Creole so I’ve put some strange things in my mouth. I like Corky’s in Memphis and Gus’s fried chicken.
10If you come through Tennessee on I 40 Whites Creek is 10 minutes south of exit 347. We know the back door to the Smokies. Just sayin’….
11See you in Charlotte, girlfriend!
12“…a tendency to get drunk, nakkid, and swing from the rafters.”
Not necessarily in that order. We’ll try to not have you come home to a smoking crater where the salon used to be, but no promises!
Have fun storming the castle!
13Have a wonderful, wonderful time, do us proud, and I get all
14shaky when I think of you so close to our pres.
Lots of pictures please!
Have a wonderful time…don’t forget to say hey to Joanne B, my friend in the VT delegation. Travel safe!
15Safe travels and I hope you return happy. We’ll miss you but expect to have some fun here with your great subs.
Hope to see you on the tee vee machine.
16Safe travels to you and Bubba.
Swing from the chandeliers……. every chance you get.
Have a really, really good time.
17Quit swinging from the rafters nekkid after we got the little kitty with claws. Slice and dice.
18I’m sure we won’t leave a smoking crater, but I suspect Thelma will have to restock her secret liquor cabinet that’s behind the panel in back of the hair dryers.
19The best bbq in Memphis is at Cozy Corner BBQ – Memphis, TN

It is definitely worth finding and it is easy to find as you pass through Memphis. It’s the real thing!
Visited the Clinton Library last week and it’s worth the trip.
Also, if you haven’t seen Madeleine Allbright’s “Read My Pins” show, it’s at the Mint Museum Downtown in Charlotte., which is, I believe, just down the street from the Convention site. Knowing how you like shiny, I think you’ll love it. I know I did.
Drive safe and do us proud.
21Might be interesting. Don’t think I’ve ever seen KellyBee swinging from the rafters nekked
22Have fun Juanita! I’m sure everyone will be on their best behavior.
hehehe.
I mean—I KNOW everyone will be on their best behavior.
23are you taking the O. bag and the M. bag?? are you letting another Dem woman carry the M. bag, just because you can??
I’m excited to see your pics from the convention, your clothes, of course, and a postcard!! Obamanos! as we say here in NM.
24You are on amission to help save the USA. God bless both of you,
25Safe journeys Juanita Jean and Bubba.
26Hey, JJ…
I love that you are going on this grand adventure, but I am nervous about whether you might need your floaties as you cross the path of Isaac somewhere along the way.
Be careful, Hon!
Suggested Checklist:
Floaties–Check.
Galoshes–Check.
Heavy-duty rain gear–Check.
Industrial-strength umbrella–Check.
New wiper blades on the car–Check.
Okay. I’m happy. Be careful, and have a great time.
27Have a great time and like Gene said, don’t eat the barbecue in Charlotte. When I lived there, I would always haul back about 10 pounds of Texas brisket, 5 dozen tamales, and a case of Wolf Brand Chili whenever I came home on vacation. And for sure, don’t order a chili dog with everything on it. It will NOT have cheese or onions. No, they put the chili on it and top it with coleslaw. They sure do like their coleslaw in Charlotte.
However, if you want a good gyro, try Showmars. They have a couple of downtown (or uptown as it’s known there) locations or at least they used to.
Have fun and we’ll be keeping an eye on the place for you.
28Enjoy yourself and you might try the Boiled peanuts just for the sake of being able to say you tried them, but, it’s unlikely you will like them.
29I couldn’t be prouder that you are representing Texas.
Have fun.
Mattie’s Diner, across from the NC Music Factory; a genuine converted railroad dining car, not far from uptown. Good food, decent prices, fun ambiance, open 24 hours.
Best coffee: Smelly Cat Coffee House on E. 36th in NoDa (arts district); seriously good coffee, seriously cool atmosphere. Try to go on Friday or Saturday night when the street vendors are out–this Friday, in fact, is Gallery Crawl also, so great timing if you’re in town by then.
30Omigosh! How could I forget? Amalie’s French Bakery. Do NOT miss this. On N. Davidson, also in the NoDa arts district and also 24-hours. Spectacular pastries, good coffee, interesting non-coffee drinks (dare ya to try the lavendar lemonade!). Pretty good sandwiches, too, but it’s the bakery goods that’ll curl your toes. Their pastries have even gone to the White House (yup, *that* White House) during a small business conference. Seriously, if you do nothing else for the local experience in Charlotte, this is your one place. A tad pricey, but worth it!
31I’m going to ignore al the disparaging remarks about NC BBQ except to say that there is a big difference between Eastern and Western styles and I think y’all have only had the Eastern. It is usually served with “red slaw,” an abomination unto the Lord that replaces mayo with that awful vinegary BBQ sauce.
32That said, if you need bail money I’ll be there in a flash. And if you get anywhere near Pilot Mountain give me a shout and I’ll treat you to a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch in Mount Airy, take you next door to Floyd’s Barbershop for a photo and then bring you back to Pilot Mountain for coffee and some Clara Marie’s banana pudding at The Living Room Coffee House on Main St.
I can’t wait for your convention coverage!
