We all got together yesterday to celebrate the sixth birthday of one of our granddaughter, so today will be getting together to visit and play with the five month old grandbaby. He thinks life is fascinating. I hear he has learned to grab earrings.
I just got a call from a friend who called to thank me for mothering her. I’m sure I need to call someone and do the same.
    Hugs all around.

This is my first Mother’s Day without my mom. As my sister has said, an important part of a parent’s job is to teach our children to live without us. Indeed, she lives in me. I am a 4th generation Texas Yellow Dog Democrat and I come from a long line of generous, fierce, loving women who did not stand for selfishness of any form (read: the Republican platform). Thank you, Mom. Love and thanks to all the moms in The Salon!

VintageMom, sounds like you and all the others here turned out real nice. What would we have done without our mothers who went ahead and did the best they knew at the time, even if they were scared or broke or just flat out had to stand up and demand changes when they didn’t see much chance of it happening.

p.s. JJ, lovely picture of Momma and the great-grand. Nothing like babies. I figure the porch of heaven will have a long row of rocking chairs with elderly folks holding babies in them.

My mother suffered from Alzheimer’s for about 10 years, which gave me the chance to “mother” her until her death. She was a working mom long before it was acceptable and provided a wonderful role model for her kids. Thanks, Mom.

  9. Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers and motherers out there!

For a great story about one mother’s tribute from her son, here’s Sally Jenkins’ column about what Kevin Durant said when he accepted the NBA MVP award:

Happy Mothers Day. Mine is long gone, and I and my sisters never had children, so I just enjoy all the mothers I know, primarily by wishing them a happy on FB, here, and elsewhere. #BringBackOurGirls

If you’re a mother and a regular visitor to the Beauty Salon, I’m pretty confident that you’re devoted to fairness and kindness within your families as well as in your public lives. A Happy and Blessed Mother’s Day to you all.

  13. Happy Mothers Day to all the most wonderful women in the world at The World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, Inc!

Jane and I spent our 3rd annual traditional morning at her Mom’s house doing the annual spring yard chores, then repeated at my Mom’s house this afternoon. Tonight it will be dinner and dancing with our Moms and Dads. Mr Growlie Pants, as I secretly (oops, that secret is not now) think of Jane’s Dad, can even manage to enjoy the day and evening. LOL Maybe when we make him a grandfather, he’ll forgive me for marrying his beautiful daughter.

Mr & Mrs Bankston, you have some right fine genetics going on in your family. From Great Grand-mama to your newest arrival and all in the middle, truly wonderful. Right back at you with wishes for “I hope your day is filled with memories and joy.”

    PCM,
Thank you! I have good sons-in-law, but you are a great one!
My youngest called and asked some amazingly tricky questions of me today, she’s writing a paper on “mothering” in a class using generational information as the basis. I did good, for needing to give an extemporaneous synopsis of my life…and she sat rather stunned at the end, saying it was a lot to digest.
My family history was a nightmare, and I tried to give her just the history, not the story…I hold that my daughters will all have healthy, whole experiences of life and love, and my relationship is only of secondary other tertiary need. I am happy in my life, with my love, so am fine. The daughters that do have me in their lives, have me completely, with love and wonderful care. Blessings to all women who have held it together and been blessed by children who survive to figure it out on their own. And even more blessings to those who have lost that battle, for their can be no greater grief than that. Anyone male or female, who loves another as much or more as they love themselves, and takes a chance on life, deserves to be honored today.

  15. Thank you, Elise Von Holten. I might not have been the ‘perfect’ choice as a husband, but there is no denying I love Jane with all my soul and will do whatever it takes to to provide for her, protect her, and cherish her. When we are lucky enough to begin our family, I want to marry her again and repeat my vows to love her always.

For this I thank my Mom & Dad, both of whom taught a boy to love and respect women. Living and loving the good life, thanks to wonderful parents and hoping to be a good husband and father. About that father part, I can’t wait. If we have a girl or a boy, this Dad will be there to encourage our child, be it sports, academics, environmentalism, politics or whatever their interest and educate them to the best of their abilities.

Happy Mothers Day everyone! This might be the first of the best of my life, I’m gonna be a Daddy!!!!!!
