Gorgeous Daniel
My longtime adored friend, TexasEllen, has a grandson with CHARGE syndrome. Daniel is a breathtakingly gorgeous child and was Ellen’s first grandchild.
This is serious stuff, but I thought you’d like to know one of our favorite customer’s thoughts on Mitt Romney and her grandson. Elizabeth Moon, also a frequent commenter here, used her website to let Ellen rant. I want to share it with you.
This is an important election. For me, for Daniel, and for all of us together.
As the grandmother of another beautiful boy who needed a liver transplant at 5 months of age, I can relate to Ellen’s story. Our for-profit healthcare system is a disgrace and while I don’t think ObabmaCare goes far enough, it is a real start on our journey to reform. One can only conclude that people who would vote against it have never been up against our “system”.
1Amen, amen, amen. I’ve recently developed what the neurologists say is probably the early stages of multiple sclerosis. I’m self-employed. What that means is, under Obamacare, I can go back to Texas to take care of my parents, who aren’t getting any younger. If Romney is elected and Obamacare is repealed, I have to stay in Massachusetts (or some other state with universal coverage, like Vermont) because I’ll NEVER be able to get affordable health insurance anywhere else. I like Vermont and Massachusetts, mind you, but it seems kind of hard on Mom and Dad.
And I’m in my 50’s. How much worse would it be to have (or be) a small child with a serious pre-existing condition?
2Tears in my eyes. God bless Daniel, and all in Ellen’s family.
3Loving that last paragraph:
4“Daniel is just as human as he was in his mother’s womb. “
May every blessing be on Daniel, a beautiful child.
Everyday in every way, the Republicans show that they love the fetus, but hate the child. However, I am not even sure they do love the fetus because they do not want to provide good health care for poor pregnant women.
5They don’t love fetuses either. They just love the idea of controlling women’s wombs.
6Shared. We have to keep up the pressure, showing doubters with REAL LIFE STORIES how these policies affect us. That was one of the best things about the convention, seeing the videos making these kinds of points, then hearing from the people in person why we have to work to our last bit of energy to re-elect President Obama. There is too much at stake.
7I became disabled at 45. I have not worked in 13 years.
I am on Medicare and SSI disability.
My 28 year old son developed adult onset allergies, very severe and has to carry an epi pen. Thank God he was in grad school at the time and had insurance.
He now has a pre existing condition. I do too. I am angry that these wealthy republican males think that they know everything and do not give a damn about the rest of us.
I KNOW romney has NO empathy, not a shred to be seen.
8I don’t know what Ann Romney’s definition of it is, but she doesn’t seem to have any either.
It remains a mystery that working-class people choose Republicans over Democrats. Being in lock step with an ideology that is hateful, selfish, and divisive demonstrates an amazing capacity for ignorance and blind allegiance. I have some very good friends who refuse to listen to any facts I try sharing with them because they’ve been blinded by the GOP brainwashing squad.
9There is a town not far from where I live called Hearne. It was a prosperous little railroad town with some rich farms nearby in the Brazos River bottom. It was a pretty good mix of landowners, shopowners, and laborers. When the Civil Rights desegregation order came down, the white landowners and shopkeepers moved down the road to less diverse Bryan, which became even less diverse; the poorer laborers (white, black, and Hispanic) were tied to Hearne – most couldn’t afford to move even had they wanted to. Walmart finished the shops off by moving in with their everyday low prices- effectively closing all the other small mom n pop shops and cottage tailors, bakers, etc. The store suffered massive shrink issues and was the first WalMart ever to close and move out.
When these people go to the polls, it is fascinating to observe how the old resentments and prejudices assert themselves. If one group advances a plan or idea, the other groups are certain that it will put them at a disadvantage somehow. In cases where it is obvious that a plan would benefit everyone, the old guard will do everything they can to sabotage and ultimately defeat the plan on the grounds that “those people” get too much already and don’t deserve anything, thereby cutting off their noses to spite their faces. It is amazingly sad.
It also looks remarkably like the current version of the GOP and it’s hangers-on. Tragic.
