Good News of the Day

There’s a new NBC/WallStreet Journal poll out that I flat love.

More Americans feel comfortable with a presidential candidate who identifies as gay or lesbian than with one who identifies as an evangelical Christian, according to a new poll.

The results revealed that Americans are actually quite open to having a gay presidential candidate. Sixty-one percent said they would be either enthusiastic about or comfortable with a gay or lesbian candidate, while only 37 percent said they would have reservations or be uncomfortable.

I imagine that’s mixed news for Rick Perry.

Thanks to Charles for the heads up.

  2. As someone who has become increasingly uncomfortable with those who identify their Christianity as “evangelical,” I am not terribly surprised. When I was young, evangelical was generally equated with the “holy rollers.” Imagine my surprise when I discovered that my church, and most other Lutheran churches in my synod, had the word “evangelical” in their name. (My church, Prince of Peace, was actually “The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Prince of Peace.”)

There’s also the point that most gays and lesbians I know are not trying to change the political agenda to be exclusionary. They tend to want more rights for folks. Civil rights, you know? The right to make your own medical decisions. Those kinds of things.

  3. So that was the noise I heard — the sound of heads exploding!

So in such a case, we’d certainly have the President and the First Husband or First Wife … I think it would be an amazing turnabout and, yes, Maggie … heads will, or would, be exploding!! At least their brains would actually be doing something!!

OMG … can you just imagine the Huckster … it makes me laugh out loud just visualizing his fat, punkin head going KAPLOOIE!! Punkin guts all over the place!!

When will Lindsey Graham announce he’s coming out…as a candidate.

Don’t know Uncle Dave. But it will be nice to have two Republican women in the race. /snark/

Gawd bless Juanita. I got a really good laugh from this one (as I do from so many of her witty observations.) Thanks, m’dear. I hope all is well for you and yours in the Lone Star State. Big hug.

Susan F: you can’t take “evangelical” all that seriously. I was reared in the Congregational church, which later merged with the “Evangelical and Reformed Churches”, now the UCC.

  10. Saw this a while back and was happy about it. Good news for many folks.

On the other hand, try asking how many Americans would be okay with an atheist, or even agnostic, president. We’re still the bottom of the barrel, even though you could make a case for Jefferson, Lincoln, and one or two others leaning our way. No problem in Britain, New Zealand, and some other civilized countries, but No Atheists Wanted here.

  11. Too bad they don’t all go to the polls on Election Day.

  12. maryelle says:

Where were all these open-minded people during the 2014 elections? Why did we get stuck with even more Repug haters?
Why are we still re-hashing civil rights, equality for women, immigration, climate change and just about every progressive change this country needs? It boggles the mind!

  13. Maybe we’ll get a gay evangelical Christian.

Naw, just kidding. I mean, some are gay, but they’ll never admit it.
