It’s in the news.

SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County District Attorney’s Office investigator accidentally shot himself in the foot Friday morning.

The shooting happened around 9:00 a.m. at the San Antonio Police Department Academy in the 12,200 block of SE Loop 410. News 4 San Antonio was told the investigators was cleaning the weapon, when it went off.

He was taken to University Hospital and is expected to be all right.

No, no, no.  He may indeed heal up, but he will never be all right.

Thanks to George for the heads up.

I have always wondered about the phrase “(fill in the blank) was cleaning the weapon, when it went off”. Why on earth would you attempt to clean a weapon with a round in the chamber??

  2. Guns Safety Rule #1: Never point a gun at anyone (or any foot) you don’t intend to shoot.

Gun Safety Rule #2: Guns are always loaded. Always.

    2
  3. Exhibit No. 1, in answer to the gun nutz saying, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Of course, he was not fatally shot, he’s just TSTL (Thanks, Mike!)

Did the category of “Shot While Cleaning Weapon” get more active lately or are we just paying more attention to it?

This is another instance which clearly shows gun owners should be required to buy mutilation insurance.

    Lynn:
Amen to your second rule. I have a Sig Mosquito pistol that has a red plastic flag that can be inserted into the chamber when it’s empty. The flag hangs outside the breech so anyone can see it. But I still handle the gun as if it were loaded. It’s just a good habit to get into. Too bad the NRA can’t help in that regard any more.

    Makes you wonder.

  8. Emergency room docs must be getting pretty proficient at treating foot & butt wounds around the country.

    8
  9. The NRA ought to support having to prove that you know something about handling a gun before buying one. It would keep more of their members alive and paying dues.

  10. Grace Newton says:

Gun Rule Number Three, if you don’t know which end of the gun the bullet comes out of, someone needs to take it away from you and lock it up.

    10
  11. Grace: No, no…according to the NRA, you don’t lock up the innocent firearm…remember, “Guns don’t kill people–people do”…you lock up the person. (Unless he’s white and stupid, in which case you pat him on the back, show him the difference, and give the gun back to him, agreeing that he needs it for protection.)

    11
  12. Forgot to add: every person in law enforcement who “accidentally” shoots himself or another person, or who leaves his weapon unsecured so someone else can get it (like the deputy in Tennessee who put his loaded weapon down on the bed “just for a minute” and claims the toddler shot his wife) should be summarily fired and all his/her firearms confiscated permanently.

These people have had firearms training–there is no excuse whatever for their carelessness. (Though that deputy–I’d be real interested in whether an independent witness saw the toddler shoot the wife or if this is an unsubstantiated claim by the deputy. I’d be looking at a potential murder charge. Just sayin’.) Any adult leaving firearms where children can get to them–and the child causes an injury or death–should be charged as an accessory to the injury or death. Prison time.

Quit calling these things accidents. They’re not accidents. They’re bad choices by people who choose to be lazy or careless (isn’t that what they say about the people they put in jail???)

    @EMoon, Amen.

The story that was widely reported here in SA was that he was “clearing” (unloading) his weapon at the Police Academy. He had to know that it was in fact loaded. If that was the case, he should have never pulled the trigger except when it was pointed into a clearing barrel.

    14
  15. Col Cooper wrote several times over the years there were four simple rules for weapon safety,,,
“1. All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
    2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
    4. Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.”
