Fun With Guns: Can I Get a Refund? Edition

Out in California, a gun safety instructor shot one of his students.  Phillip Rushing, the instructor, shot his student, who also happens to be a popular local minister.

The Victim

The Victim

“During the scenario, the instructor drew the firearm and it accidentally discharged,” she said. She did not know whether Rushing forgot he replaced the training gun or whether he knew he was drawing the real gun.

“When it fired and he realized what happened, he immediately dialed 911.”

The article notes that they have closed the school for the day after that.

The minister was shot in the stomach and underwent successful surgery.  They say he’s in plenty of pain but he will make a complete recovery.

  1. Larry from Colorado says:

OK NRA, tell me again how everybody should have a gun if the instructors cannot use one properly.

  2. Marcia in CO says:

Well, thank God the minister is OK!!

    2
  3. Odd how god can save a person through a surgeons hands, but can’t keep some moron from shooting him in the first place.

    3
  4. OK so let’s agree on some definitions shall we? The normal peoples and the NRA and the 2A-mmosexuals.

A safety instructor who negligently wounds a student, in particular, or even some random mofo who just due to back luck wanders in, is NOT, repeat NOT, qualified to “instruct” in safety. Prima-facie. S/he just isn’t. Safety instructors just don’t ever negligently discharge a firearm. NEVER. As the judge said to the sexual predator, the limit on San Quinton quail is zero, none.

  5. “back” luck = “bad” luck. My haunted keyboard + hurried Micr = poor performance. Sorry (“/)

  6. e platypus onion says:

Dangit, Micr your a professional and should have checked to make sure your keyboard was loaded properly. Wingnuts will accuse of all of being irresponsible keyboard owners and want to violate our 1st amendment rights and take our keyboards away. Naw. 🙂

  7. e platypus onion says:

Gadzookies-you got me doing it. 🙂 Accuse us all of…. They will say since I neglected the us that I hate ‘murrica.

Let he/she who is w/o sin(besides me) cast the first stone.

    Occasionally I take off as if I can type. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sadly. :{

  10. Instructors don’t have an easy lot. One mistake of any sort does them in. Daughter was taking driving lessons many, many years ago from a county cop along with some other kids. He decided to demonstrate how to turn in a certain situation before allowing the kids to take over. He actually crashed the car into a pole.

Class was dismissed for the day with no notification of a next session.

What I learned in the military:

Lesson 1: This is not a toy!

  12. Ralph Wiggam says:

What was that Jefferson said about the tree of liberty and the blood of patriots? I hope that guy bled a lot. The Second Amendment needs his blood more than it needs mine.

    12
  13. So the victim was a minister taking a personal protection class involving firearms? Sounds like he should be on the faculty of Liberty University.

    13
  14. The Washington Post had a front-page article today about Liberty U. Scary stuff, even though most of it wasn’t about the guns.

Yeah, gun safety instructors shouldn’t get one freebie. Screw up with a lethal weapon and you’re out. Same for ANYBODY who doesn’t know how to handle lethal weapons safely.

    14
  15. Jorge Peralta says:

There has to be a consequence besides ‘accident’ when you are deploying a deadly device and it accidentally hurts someone else. A big fine and loss of access to guns comes to mind. You shoot someone, even if by mistake, you lose your toys.

    15
  16. If you can’t play with it right, you can’t play with it at all. Should probably apply to rapists and child molesters too.

    16
  17. Edward Starsmith says:

There is no such thing as a “gun accident”. There are only examples of unsafe gun handling.

I hope the medical bill is astronomical. I hope the business liability insurance covers it, and then cancels coverage for that “school”, forcing them to close.

    17
  18. If Katrina was God’s punishment visited on New Orleans for their sinful way, I wonder what this minister did to piss off the Big Guy so much.

    18
  19. Is this like when a lightning bolt comes down from heaven with a message?

    19
  20. Elizabeth Moon says:

Redwood: Yeah. “Messengers of good will and peace shouldn’t be taking lessons in how to kill people.”

    20
  21. “Those who live by the sword….”

    21
  22. JAKvirginia says:

Brings a whole new meaning to ” Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition”.

    22
  23. Was the Pastor packin’ because so many of his God-fearin’™ flock are also packin’?

“During the scenario, the instructor drew the firearm and it accidentally discharged,” she said.

    There. Are. No. Accidents.
