Fun With Guns: Almost A Brain Surgeon Edition
Often when I want a cup of coffee, I go to the airport coffee shop and take my AR-15 along with me for company.
You don’t?
Peter Steinmetz, 54, of Tempe, was booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of two counts of disorderly conduct for displaying a deadly weapon.
The counts stem from when Steinmetz removed the AR-15 from his shoulder and the muzzle faced toward a woman and her daughter in a waiting area in Terminal 4, according to police. Both the woman and her daughter reported fearing for their safety, police said.
Right. At the Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona.
When confronted by the police, “Steinmetz said that he went to the airport only to buy a cup of coffee and had no other business there.”
Yep. I do that all the time.
And here’s the best part: “Steinmetz is director of the neuroengineering program at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.” He might want to check his own neuroengineering.
Thanks to everybody for the heads up.
Remind me not to ever need medical help in Arizona.
1Does his bedside manner include both the sneer and the weapon?
2Uh, this is gonna get him some face time with the state medical board. Even if all they do is get together for a communal harumph this is going on his record as a hearing, the very thing you don’t want with either a state board of a Congressional committee.
3I just came through that airport and it was jammed with families. What kind of paranoid nutcase takes an assault weapon to an airport just to get coffee. There had to be something else going on and it sure as heck looks like that gun was there to be used. His explanation doesn’t ring true.
4A DOCTOR? Oh, maybe an engineer. Maybe who knows, a closet psychopath. I sure wouldn’t want to open my eyes after surgery and see him standing there. I’d think I was hallucinating again.
5This open carry crap is going to end very badly. And after the inevitable blood bath, people are going to be standing around, astounded that nothing proactive was even attempted to prevent a tragedy. Say a prayer tonight that nobody you know is harmed.
6From that facial expression one might surmise he’s a cousin of Dick Cheney.
7I’m waiting for one of these dim folk to swing the gun around while the police approach and dim is blown away for threatening the police.
8KarenJ503! Exactly! Have looked at that pix several times, thinking that he reminded me of someone. Darth Cheney it is!
9What is REALLY scary.. You can’t make this stuff up.
I saw a young couple in WM the other day. A toddler and a baby in the shopping cart. And the cowardly man had a gun strapped to his waist. I couldn’t help it. Watching him herd the toddler stopped me in my tracks. I turned and happened to catch the girl’s eyes. She just barely shook her head. Just enough to tell me she didn’t DARE open her mouth. Wonder how long it will be before he leaves it where the toddler can find it?
I don’t get out much. And certainly don’t make a spectacle of myself. If you are old, you are invisible unless you do act up. But I had already decided next time, I WILL go to the manager. That is STUPID.. In all these years that is my first sighting of a gun. That idiot is the one to be afraid of. Dollar to a doughnut he abuses that girl. They both showed the signs I have seen before.
10Marge Wood, the few people I know who are neuroengineers also pre-med as well as engineering school on their resume. Nowadays it is not unusual to see a few people here and there with that kind of background, even an M.D. Thus, that was my guess.
11Peter Nathan Steinmetz, MD PhD NRA
12IQ: off the chart
Current Status: off his meds
And today someone did a thorough inventory of the drug cabinets at Barrow Neurological Institute. I wonder what they found?
13I’m going to be traveling to Atlanta over Labor Day. Hartsfield International is far from my favorite airport, though its being a perfect target for terrorists is not my only reason. Usually I take the train to Atlanta for this convention, but the convention agreed to pay for my travel, and this is what they chose. So yeah, I’ll be nervous a bit.
As for this guy…he’s old enough to have earned that face, and that face is not someone I want to be in sight of.
14oh my GOD!!!! My 13 yr old daughter has just been diagnosed with a rare benign brain tumor called a hypothalamic hamartoma and the Barrow Neurological Institute is one of the few places in the world with experience treating this. Well crap. Should I take a durn metal detector with me when we go for my child’s consult? A bullet proof vest for each member of our family? Is there ANYWHERE in this country without heat-packing idiots?
15This was the second time this idjit packed his AK15 when he went to Sky Harbor and made the papers, but they didn’t print his name the first time. He and his 12 yr old son went to pick up “a woman” at the airport. He had his assault rifle over his shoulder. The 12 yr old wore a holstered pistol. When security approached him, he said he feared for the safety of himself and the person he was picking up at the airport.
It would make me hesitate to seek help at Barrows, too. And they are ‘the best’ in the neurological arena. This is going to hurt Barrows; I hope they get rid of this man. He’s clearly off his rocker!
