Welcome to The World's Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, Inc.
My name is Susan DuQuesnay Bankston. I live in Richmond, Texas, in the heart of Tom DeLay's old district. It's nuttier than squirrel poop here.
I am honored and privileged to know Miss Juanita Jean Herownself, hairdresser extraordinary and political maven. Since she does not have time to fiddle with this internet stuff, I type her website for her and you can read it if you want to. If you don't, she truly does not give a big bear's butt.
A lot of what I post here has to do with local politics, but you probably have the same folks in your local government.
This ain't a blog. Blogs are way too trendy for me. This is a professional political organization.
In your defense, it is a little hard not to be bitter. Just sayin’.
1Since the Republicans have rejected the President’s Chained CPI offer,
2it’s time to take it off the table. The next move should be one recommended by Robert Reich, a former Secretary of Labor: Lift the ceiling of income subject to Social Security to $200,000 and allow grandma and grandpa their COLAs.
Maryelle, thanks for sharing Reich’s suggestion. I figure if Reich suggests something it’s a good idea. If y’all want to call the White House, the number is 202 456 1111.
3Thanks Maryell and Marge! Here is an excerpt from Reich’s original post and a link to the full article which is well worth the read:
“Today, though, the Social Security payroll tax hits only about 84 percent of total income.
It went from 90 percent to 84 percent because a larger and larger portion of total income has gone to the top. In 1983, the richest 1 percent of Americans got 11.6 percent of total income. Today the top 1 percent takes in more than 20 percent.
If we want to go back to 90 percent, the ceiling on income subject to the Social Security tax would need to be raised to $180,000.
Presto. Social Security’s long-term (beyond 26 years from now) problem would be solved.”
I would add, it makes no sense to set a minimum wage, a COLA, or a tax ceiling and then walk away from it, assuming it will never need to be adjusted. Things change that was 1983, thirty years ago, and although our Congress wants to adjust us back to an antebellum era, I’d rather look at how things are now. Calling the White House with my talking points.

4Y’all are so heartless. I work in payroll, and it breaks my heart when I have to tell upper management how much their cap increased each year. Poor things, the cap went from $110,100 in 2012 up to $113,700 this year! That’s like $223.20 less that they will be taking home for the year, how will they ever manage?
5President Obama knew when he made his budget proposal that it would never be implemented.
So, judging what he did instead of what he said, we have this:
1. He has positioned himself as reasonable and Presidential. And since he’s not up for re-election, the issue cannot harm him.
2. He got the Repubs to once again show themselves as total obstructionists–we now have an entire generation of young voters who have never seen them otherwise. And the Repubs are openly supporting cuts to SS payments while fighting one penny of tax increases on the rich, contrary to what the majority of voters want.
3. Meanwhile the Dems have come out as champions and defenders of SS, in stark contrast to the Repubs. Frankly I’m enjoying seeing the Dems fired up enough to fight for something. And the Dem response is so coordinated that I wonder if it was planned in advance.
I’m against chained CPI, but I’m also against getting myself upset over something that has not actually happened and likely never will.
6Yeah I know he’s playing 3 dimensional chess while the Repuglicans are playing checkers. I’ve heard all that before. I don’t agree this time. Already the rightwing nuts are talking about Obama stealing from granny. Are people dumb enough to believe that it’s only Obama who wants to make grandma have to eat cat food instead of chicken? Hell yes and many of them are my dimwitted relatives. Somehow the Rethuglicans manage to turn everything on it’s head. Day is night and down is up. The Rethuglicans reject everything Obama offers but what if they take him up on it this time. And why is he offering it to start with. You start out with everything you want and then negotiate down not the reverse.
7Deb, that’s interesting. If the objective is 90%, seems to me it the tax should apply to 90% of income–everybody’s income. That way those of us who make much less than the current maximum won’t have to pay on 100% of our income while those who make much more pay on only a smattering of theirs. Makes sense to me, anyway.
I’ve been waiting for the Rs to take the chained CSI the same way they take everything else–you know, if we allow gay marriage, then we’ll have people wanting to marry their dogs. So if chained CSI means people will lower their standard of living when prices go up, does that mean we’ll just keep on chaining along until we have granny and six of her best friends living in a one-room apartment and eating cat food because that’s how they adjust to rising prices? Where are those scary people who like to exaggerate all this stuff?
