So there’s a giant fire in California and it looks like the only thing that’s gonna put it out is for Canada to melt and head south.
Firefighters are evacuating homes in the line of fire.
They ain’t going. And you can’t make ‘em.
They are met with people who have guns and [are] saying, ‘Get off my property and you are not telling me to leave,’” he said.
In response to those who flatly refused to evacuate, he said, deputies were asking for next-of-kin information.
Now, here’s what I say. When people come to the hospital without a COVID vaccine and expect us to break the back of our health care system to help them, it pisses me off. If you want to stay in a house that’s gonna burn down, do not expect us to come rescue you once the fire is at your door and there’s no escape route. Give us your kids and then go sit in your kitchen and drink the kool aid.
How dumb do you have to be to shoot somebody risking their lives to save you. Pretty damn dumb.
Rising tide of stupid……
1Well, from the newspaper reports, they won’t be coming to Texas hospitals, we’re full up. Sadly, they will suffocate, alone at home.
2Ignorance kills. I say grant them their death wish and quickly move on to people that want help.
3As for covid hospitalizations, they are at a point even here, where over 70% are vaccinated, that deathly ill patients are turned away without covid. Since hospitals are already prioritizing who gets a room, if you’re an unvaccinated covid patient, you’ll need to stay in the hall to make room for other patients. I saw a story on the news this morning where an ICU nurse said virtually all covid patients are unvaccinated in her unit but they’re turning away heart patients, etc. that’s wrong. The unvaccinated have a death wish so let em go and save someone that needs help.
Well, the wildfires are in California’s Trump counties, so I’m sure they’ll blame Gov Newsom
4It reminds me of when Hurricane Ike was coming. People wouldn’t leave after being told that once it started getting bad, no more emergency services until it was safe for first responders.
Most folks left just in time once police drove slowly through neighborhoods telling them on loudspeakers to write their social security numbers on their foreheads with sharpies so their bloated bodies could be I.D.’d.
And yeah, turning away folks to take care of people who refused to get vaccinated is seriously screwed up.
5Stupid people and corrupt developers create a serious problem for firefighters. Doesn’t take a skilled brain surgeon like Ben Carson to realize building in fire zones without the proper infrastructure is suicide. Living not far from the north eastern base of the Sierras, we’re all too familiar with these blatant firebugs. With the tots and pears, they need burn baby, burn notices.
Had my 4th covid test today; this was the second time tested as part of an annual physical. Two annual physicals showing how long we’ve been with the covid pandemic. The other 2 tests (before and after) travel to meet VP Harris and the Second Dude in Las Vegas; after which we quarantined for 2 weeks, readily and voluntarily. BTW The new nasal swab tests are way better than the earlier ones; no discomfort.
NV for the most part is back to no shirt, no shoes, no mask and vaccination – no service. That includes most hospitals here. It was a huge mistake to open the casinos without both a vaccination passport requirement and continued mask wearing.

7I’m with Steve@3, if you’re not vaccinated you don’t get admitted to a hospital. They give you some of Drumph’s miracle quack cures and get you out of the way for them to admit actual, non self-induced, medical emergencies. And let’s just stop trying to get these anti-vaxers to repent and give in. I’m ready to let them all pare down the # of R voters we have to contend with every 2 years.
8I’m at the point where an unvaccinated person does not need to be admitted to the hospital. Actual medical emergencies need to be admitted.
Locally, our Covid, ICU and MICU units are all full and the hospital is short-staffed because nurses are quitting. They’re fed up and I don’t blame them…putting their own lives and the lives of their families on the line for people who couldn’t be bothered to take a simple public health measure. It boggles the mind.
9The patience for the unvaccinated has just about run out everywhere. I can’t believe there are schools that will reopen without mask mandates for all those kids too young to be vaccinated yet. There seems to be mass stupidity running pandemically in certain parts of the country (Texas? Florida?) and I just don’t understand it. Of course, I live in DC where we have been following the guidelines pretty much religiously and that’s why we have had so few deaths in the past two months. Most of us are vaccinated and the kids will be as soon as the FDA gives the go-ahead. I have tickets to the theater in September and have been notified that not only will I have to wear a mask; but, I will also have to show proof of vaccination.
I just don’t understand the people who refuse to evacuate the fire zone, either. What do the expect will happen? I don’t want a single fire fighter to die or suffer injury trying to save the idiots. There seem to be a lot of people who are asking to be culled from the herd. Fine. Let’s spend our energy on people who want to help themselves.
10Here in Oregon as Steve from Beaverton said, the hospitals are overwhelmed. Of course as recognized by everyone here, the unvaccinated are the problem as the local newsrooms are straining to keep up…

12Colorado is not yet in medical service shortage —
283 empty of the 1740 ICU beds … 1575 empty of 9307 Acute Care beds.
But even with beds, there are shortages: 12% of the reporting hospitals expect personnel shortages in the next week. And that is with the short term “solution” of staff working mandatory overtime. Several stories in state media of doctors and nurses experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue, which does not show any hope for improvement while there are increasing cases.
13So here’s an old joke, but it seems relevant:
A man of great faith lived in a town threatened by a flood. The storm raged. The rain poured down. The water began to rise and flood the streets.
He said to himself, “don’t worry, God will save me.”
As the water lapped three feet deep around his house, the Fire Department drove up in a big red truck and offered him a ride to safety. He said, “no, God will save me.”
After the house crumbled and he was being washed toward the ocean, a rescue boat came alongside and offered him a ride to safety. He said, “no, God will save me.”
After the flood swept him out into the open ocean, a rescue helicopter lowered a National Guard rescuer and offered him a ride to safety. He said, “no, God will save me.”
He drowned.
He showed up at the Pearly Gates. God said, “what the heck are you doing here?”
The man said, “yeah, what am I doing here? I believed that you were going to save me.”
God said “I don’t understand. I sent the Fire Department. I sent a rescue boat. I sent a helicopter.”
14If you refuse to get the shots you should be required to submit a form…which lawyer prepared your will? Who gets custody of your underage children? Does your doctor have any instructions like a DNR on file? Many who have passed have families that say the nightmare of losing a parent or child is compounded in the months that followed by not having these documents available or even prepared. OK you don’t want the shot? No extra ordinary efforts to fight for your life (I know medical professionals will still do all they can) but if you can’t at least TRY then why should a stranger?
15Darwin Nominees-every one of them.
16Five will get you ten that they’re all unvaccinated. They like four-year-olds screaming, “You’re not the boss of me!”
17I recently lived through a session with Sepsis, a blood bacterial disease which kills 20% of it’s victims. If I hadn’t been given a vacant room on a COVID ward, I am not sure what would have happened. Yes, give first consideration to those who voluntarily vaccinate, but maybe do a “field hospital” setup for unvaccinated folks? Such a shame for the ill-informed to create such chaos for the entire society.
18Its actually a step more than mere stupidity. These people need psych evals. Running for your life is inbred into us by our very earliest ancestors who had to run from not only natural disasters but such event as stampeding animals that violently objected to thatched houses built in the middle of their thoroughfares to food and water and, yes, they did trample and eat crops on a regular basis. These animals were usually much bigger and brawnier than humans. And frankly, smarter. They would never stand int he way of an oncoming brushfire or flood. Heck, they even ran for cover the moment they detected an oncoming earthquake beneath their hooves and paws. I am willing to bet pocket lint that the moment the forest fire crosses their fence, they will be ruing their bad behavior and praying for a miracle. Ya know, like the miracle of first responders that had already come and been met with artillery.
19I agree with the general feeling that all unvaccinated showing up at a hospital with Covid should be given a vigorous dope slap to the back of the head. But turning them away for failing to take simple public health measures could end up backfiring. Future steps could include turning away people with heart problems for not taking blood pressure medicine. Or obese people with diabetes-linked diseases because they failed to diet and exercise. Or one of old fools who shovel snow in the winter as if we were still in our 20s, and end up with a heart attack.
I know that’s a slippery slope argument. But with a for-profit health system can anyone really see the insurance companies not taking every step that might save them money?
However, I do vote for the dope slap to be especially vigorous for the anti-vaxers. Maybe they should have to undergo my old Aunt Betty Jo staring at them for 10 minutes, followed by her trademark “You are a truly stupid person, you know”?
20“…deputies were asking for next-of-kin information.”
Makes sense, the old advice to ‘write your SSN on your arm with an indelible Sharpie’ won’t be of much use after a wildfire burns through. It’s pretty hard to read that number on a thoroughly BBQ’ed crispy critter.
Really, we just have to acknowledge that certain rapid (d)evolutionary forces have been at work in the US in the last few decades.
A sub-species of “homo sapiens” (Latin: “wise man”) has (d)evolved from the Republican population. We might call it “homo idiotiens, or homo cretiens”, since it’s IQ has reduced to the levels of [now obsolete] the former classification of idiots or cretins:
“‘Idiot’ was formerly a technical term in legal and psychiatric contexts for some kinds of profound intellectual disability where the mental age is two years or less, ===and the person cannot guard themselves against common physical dangers.=== ”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiot
This new sub-species is going to have to be removed from positions of authority, thoroughly marginalized, massively outvoted, in order for our nation to survive. This devolved population should fairly rapidly reduce itself in numbers, but we don’t really have much time to wait for slow moving evolutionary forces to render them extinct without placing the rest of us in great peril.
They are an extreme ‘clear and present danger’ to everyone and must be neutralized as soon as possible.
21Supreme Court 1905: Jacobson v. Massachusetts. Settled law. Sit down, shut up, and get your shot!!
22I used to live where the Dixie Fire is now. I still get the newspaper (on-line) from there. They are already blaming Mr. Newsome in letters to the editor. I also saw the picture of the guys drinking beer in the middle of the street with a red sky above them and ash falling. They were saying “we’ll never leave here…” The whole place, Greenville, burned to the ground. Where are those guys now? No one knows.
23Anti-vaccination types are just the same.
Remember Harry Truman? Not the 33rd president, the old man who refused to leave his home even though Mt. St. Helens was about to blow. They never found his remains.
You can’t force people to do the sensible thing. Freud called it “thanatos” — the death wish.
24Buttermilk Sky @24, The Republithanatos Party has a nice ring to it I think, given that it’s become just a viral Trumpian death cult.
Now if we just had a vaccine that prevented one from becoming infected with it.
I’m hoping that genetically, the “homo idiotiens” [Republithanatos] sub-species will very soon diverge from homo sapiens enough to preclude future interbreeding [actual biologically, it may have already happened culturally]; since that idiotiens clade is most likely heading for self-extinction;.
25As I understand it from a history of that Mt. St. Helen’s disaster, ol’ Harry got trapped by his own stubbornness, and at the end when he really wanted to get out it was too late. Also, he didn’t want to admit he screwed up, so he stayed and died. (Eruption: The Untold Story of Mt. St. Helens)
26Mike #16, How about ‘Darwin Volunteers’? Sandridge #21, I always just shortened it to ‘Homo Sap’!
27Militant ignorance, they’d rather be BBQ’d than do something that somebody is telling them they should do to be safe. Probably think they are damn commies. The really should contemplate this: socialism is the fire department coming to save you and your neighbors from fire; capitalism is the insurance company denying your claim. Oh, and yeah, they think a gun is going to keep them safe. As I said – militant ignorance.
28Unlike cave fish, who evolved more simplicity when their biologically expensive eyes weren’t useful any more,
29human society can’t devolve to no brain. No empathy mebbe.
