Five Feet High and Rising

June 02, 2016 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

We made national news for the flooding.  The Brazos River is puffed-up proud and flowing through homes that have never seen water before.

And now —

Bubba and i are high and dry for now and suspect we’ll stay that way.  However, we are packing up today and toting our good stuff upstairs because —

And there’s no place for the water to go.

So if you don’t hear from me today, I’m packing.  When I sit down to take a rest, I’ll see what’s up.  Plus, there’s bound to be another local Republican I can pick on.

I’ll post some pictures if I get a chance.

  1. Please mind the back and be careful on the stairs. Both of you. The WMDBS patrons count on you for your voice of sanity crying in the wilderness of Texas crazy.

Praying for you and all who are being impacted by these rains. And hoping I won’t be among them.

While Texas needs love and hugs from all of us, Texans need action. The Loathsome Crooze has been silent. Gov A-Butt doesn’t seem inclined to slow down his silly lawsuits against President Obama long enough to take a pause and request the federal resources needed, or to deploy the Texas National Guard to help residents.

Those of us living outside of Texas can help. We still have electricity and internet access, phones, etc. with which to contact our Congress critters to demand help for Texans. I will take particular pleasure in encouraging Harry Reid to douse Loathsome Ted on the floor of the Senate.

We can also donate to the Red Cross and other charities who do the major work needed. Texans please let us know those charities you recommend to get the job done.

  5. Picking on Republicans, local and otherwise, is always a worthwhile pursuit.

    Be dry & safe!

  7. Ya know that old saw about a butterfly flapping its wings on the other side of the world thus creating something on this side? We are due to beta “hangover” from what is happening in TX and so forth! I have had ducks swimming in my back yard for a week now and they seem to think its home. They are kind of cute, but gee frictkin’ whiz! Our “spring” was downright cold. Then we got dumped headfirst into summer at its worst. Along comes the tail end of tropical storm up the east coast. More rain predicted for the next four days before we see any sun. Its not as heavy as your rain,JJ, but we have had weeks of it! I guess all any of us can do is hang in there!

  8. We have the reverse problem here in New Mexico. If you could send us some of that water we would be grateful . So dry here the Baptists are using a damp cloth, Methodists are giving out rain checks and the Catholics are trying to turn wine into water.

If you have any large trash bags, put stuff in them that you cannot take upstairs. Double knot! A good trick for books and such.

Saw on the News/Weather channel just what all is going on down there … just stay as safe and dry as you possibly can!!

  12. two crows says:

Oh my, JJ. That’s a helluva forecast. Good luck and stay dry.

Just as an aside, I read an article in the 1980’s that Congress was making a very calculated decision to ignore what was then called Global Warming. They decided that it would be too expensive to do anything about AND that the crisis wouldn’t occur on their watch anyway so why bother?

Of course, the CRISES are coming thick and fast and far sooner than even the most pessimistic scientists ever predicted.
    Oops.

How’s that Saving Money Thing working out for them, I wonder?

Stay safe, JJ and gang. Stay safe.

Prayers for your safety and your stuff as well. If you can find a couple boards long enough to go from bottom of stairs to landing, tie a rope around boxes and slide them up the inclined plane. MUCH safer than carrying stuff up and down. If you can rig even a simple pulley at the top, someone at the bottom can pull and slide them up to someone at the top & it’ll cut the back strain. Any “comealong” or black and tackle will also help. Save your backs and your stuff.

Attaching pulley or block & tackle to landing or wall at head of stairs–would take about 15-20 minutes if you’ve got the materials; Bubba probably already knows how. You’re creating an attachment strong enough to hitch the tackle to so nobody has to stand up there pretending to be a post. You’d have to patch and repaint the landing or upstairs wall, but it’ll save you a world of hurt to be able to pull stuff up faster and with less effort.

two crows: That kind of thinking is like saying it costs too much to buy new tires, and you need to make that cross-country trip in a real hurry–and maybe you’ll die before you get a blowout at 70 mph and get clobbered by the 18-wheeler you veered in front of.

There are people who literally cannot afford a new tire, but the US could have done a lot in the 70s and 80s to at least *delay* this catastrophe. Slow down, get off the freeway, reconsider the need to get far away faster. But even if you have to patch a roof leak instead of getting a new roof, just ignoring the leak until the whole thing falls in isn’t smart. Which you know and I know, but dadgummit Congress.

  15. Kenneth Fair says:

Check out map.texasflood.org, then click on the “Brazos River at Richmond” flood gauge (right near Greatwood on the map). As of right now (2:00 on June 2, 2016), the Brazos is at 54.8 feet, which is almost 10 feet above flood stage and 4.5 feet above the previous record.

So, yeah, there’s an emergency going on.

    15
  16. Best wishes to everyone struggling, and do keep safe.

Wonder how any requests for federal aid would go if the secessionists had gotten their way….

  17. Jill Ann says:

I am fortunate enough to have a levee around my neighborhood, so we are dry and expect (hope!) to stay that way. Still, when I learned that our main access road was flooded & closed the other day, I went around the house & moved photos & other valuables off the bottom shelves. If I get ambitious tonight, I may move stuff upstairs.

The cattle drive across Hwy 90 today was super interesting, btw. It’s a new story every day around here.

  18. Sandridge says:

Another wet bullet heading for the Houston area, hitting Victoria right now.
It blasted through here a couple of hours ago, ferocious winds, hail, gobs of rain, more damage; yeow this is getting old.

These things are like land hurricanes, giant system rotations around huge low pressure centers, or monstrous MCC’s and MCS’s rolling down.

Meanwhile, there’s also flooding in a substantial chunk of Europe, with Paris experiencing the highest water since 1951. They closed the galleries, and move artworks up from the basement.

But hey, there’s no such thing as global climate change. It’s just weather, right?
