Drumming On Fingers of Desktops UPDATED

October 28, 2013 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

We’re drumming our fingers on desktops here in Texas waiting on a decision from U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel on the constitutionality of Texas’s grotesque anti-woman bill, SB2, which will kill Texas women in the name of pro-life.

The decision is expected today but so far all we’ve heard is all sizzle and no bacon.

If I’m in the bathroom or in the middle of a perm when it comes down, jump on here and announce it.

I’m nervous as a sittin’ hen at a coyote convention.

By the way, Judge Yeakel was appointed by George W so the odds of him being smart are slim to none and slim just left town.  (I apologize.  I really do.)

UPDATE:  Y’all, I am just damn giddy.    Lookie at this.

  2. Where are the young women?
I am old enough to have fought the fight in the 70’s and I’m back at it AGAIN.
Where are the young women who will be affected by these republicans?

    Where are they?

NPR radio just announced: “Federal Judge declares Texas abortion restrictions unconstitutional, blocks enforcement”…YAY!!!

  4. Juanita Jean says:

Holy crap! That happened about 20 seconds after I post the insult to the judge. Hey, all is forgiven, Judge!

I’m gonna quit now and wait for the reporters to do their work.

  6. Marcia in CO says:

    This from Al Jazeera America:

BREAKING: A federal judge has declared Texas’ abortion restrictions unconstitutional and blocked their enforcement, the Associated Press reports.

    7
  7. How long until the Tea Party folks start saying it’s unconstitutional that the ruling says the bill is unconstitutional? 10…9…8…

  10. When looking at the link you sent, Miz Juanita Jean, I found a link on that page to “A Doctor’s Answer to Texas’ Abortion Law.” It’s a good read and worthy of having in our weapon’s bag next time we have to fight this.

    11
  11. Greg Abbott is going to file an “emergency” appeal to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. So, we’ll see…

    12
  12. Does anyone have a link or an idea of how many thousands and thousands of dollars Abbott has blown on this garbage? That would be a good point for Wendy to bring up.

    13
  13. Ab-butt’s emergency appeal will go nowhere! In its own way, the federal judge’s decision is a verification of the fight Wendy put up that fateful day. And I figured that the Texas law would end up in federal court.

    14
  14. This is one of the better articles, goes into detail why he ruled as he did.

Great link from Susan F, thanks for sharing

    15
  15. Aggieland liz says:

AND this is *not* an injunction, it’s a final ruling! 5th Circuit will have to take it and pass judgement on the merits of the law-where’s Kyle, can you break it down into language a plant-geek can get?

    16
  16. Yeakel expects the Appeals Court to reject his judgment and that it will ultimately go to the U.S. Supreme Court, where Clarence Thomas will be silent and Antonin Scalia will shoot off his mouth.

    17
  17. Marion (formerly known as MM) says:

I just called the judge’s chambers and asked them to pass a big thank you to the judge.

What does he like? Can we send him a big bottle of it?

  18. e platypus onion says:

Good post SusanF. Unfortunately, nutters depend on voodoo not science and medical knowledge to form their uninformed claptrap. In other news,S.C. Sinator Lindsey Graham has announced he will block all federal appointees until rethugs get more answers on Benghazi and the Snap program automatically loses 5 trillion dollars by Friday because Congress won’t work together.

    19
  19. e platypus onion says:

Sorry, that was 5 billion bucks not trillion.

    20
  20. Marge Wood says:

The young women are out at low paying jobs working without benefits and with mandatory overtiime and sorry sick leave policies. That’s where they are. Trying to survive.

    21
  21. austinhatlady says:

Diane, I’m also old enough to have fought the good fight the first time around. And I spent several days at the Capital during the first special session in June and saw swarms of young women actively in the protests. That includes Jennifer Longoria, a young a get-out-the-vote activist who helped me sign up for Twitter so I could follow what media &others were reporting during hours spent in the House gallery.

    22
  22. John Peter Henson says:

What are these Abortion-Mill stories in the media that Ricky is referring to? Des he get special “Eyes only” media reports?

  23. e platypus onion says:

JPH-here is what Perry is whining about- http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/13/justice/pennsylvania-abortion-doctor-trial

    24
  24. e platypus onion says:

BTW-some of the reporting is quite graphic and nauseating. Be warned.

    25
  25. When I was down at the Lege hoping to testify against this awful legislation (I never got a chance despite sitting down there for 8 hours), I saw many young women taking a stand. They’re out there and they’re working for their/our rights.

And having seen Judge Yeakel in action and read some of his opinions, I was pleased but not surprised by his decision. Though I think he’s wrong on the medication abortion rule. He’s absolutely right that this is going to the Fifth Circuit and maybe the Supreme Court before we’re done.

    26
  26. fenway fran says:

Diane, they were out there en masse during the protests at the Capitol. Very proud of my daughter, who went every day with her no holds barred two sided signs and lots of friends. I saw them with my own eyes at the DNC in Charlotte at the Planned Parenthood Rally where you had to run a gauntlet of very aggressive abortion porn protesters to get to it. Lots of young women, proud in pink. For those of us on the other side of 60, it was great to see.

    27
  27. And, the fund raising letters from Abbott and Patrick….. just got put in the mail.

    28
  28. Angelo_Frank says:

And the adherents of Christian Dominionism will just keep on fighting to control the reproductive rights of women. Perry and Abbott are saying full steam ahead on the Texas Abortion Law.

    29
  29. Better than I’d hoped for, though the 20-week ban and the surgical facilities portions are still intact. But with this Supreme Court? *shakes head*

    30
  30. e platypus onion says:

Fake Noise reports that the Texas AG’s office claims the new law protects the life of the woman and the life of the fetus. Not wanting to sound callous, but a fetus isn’t necessarily supposed to survive an abortion so doesn’t that mean an admission that Texas is trying to prevent abortions by requiring live births, without actually saying that? Wasn’t it the Lt. Governor that said after the second special session, when this bill finally passed, that they were trying to outlaw abortion?

    31
  31. Marge Wood says:

Yeah, full steam ahead on our tax money.

    32
  32. Marge Wood says:

When I read the article that said similar laws were also being fought in Wisconsin etc etc, I immediately googled Koch brothers and texas women’s health care clinics. Yep. They’re there. Feel free to look around.

    33
  33. Marge Wood says:

Just thinking out loud here. You ever think it’s kind of strange that the Koch brothers have a way of showing up anywhere that sensible folks wish they’da stayed in Kansas? I love Kansas, but really. If it’s about making a mess and selling water, they’re there. If it’s about women’s health clinics, they’re there. If it’s about public education or oil or making developers richer or Ted Cruz getting in the same newspaper three times in one day and him only a freshman senator, they’re there. Hmmm.

    34
  34. Marge Wood says:

From a friend: (Read the whole thing before you call someone.)

New law: Greg Abbott has to pay the legal fees (and his own salary) when he sues someone.

As soon as I get to be King of the World, that will be my new law.

    35
  35. I’m glad that there were young women standing in Texas, but on the whole, there does not seem to be a unified young women’s voice heard throughout the country.
    Glad about the ruling.
    Th republicans sure are hypocrits.

    36
  36. @Marge Wood: My new law would be that all legislation has to identify who will make money off of it. I’ve got a sneaky feeling about the proposition concerning water conservation.

    37
  37. @Marge Wood: That’s actually the law in Great Britain. If you lose, you have to pay everybody’s legal fees; ergo, they have many fewer law suits–especially against corporations. Those mavericks who sued, and won, against McDonalds were essentially broke in the first place, so had no money to pay out in any case.

    38
  38. I am so ready for a Women’s Revolution. Greg Abbott, the Neanderthal, is still fighting even this judge’s decision. I’d consider a road trip to Texas on behalf of Wendy Davis and the women of Texas.

    39
  39. Marge Wood says:

Come on over, Hilary. Even folks against abortion are outraged against removing clinics that are the only source of health care for many, many women in Texas–pap smears, birth control, cervical exams etc.
and re: Prop. 6, there are two strong views about it. I tend to go with the ones that say “why do we need an amendment to the TX constitution to pour money into hands of wealthy”? The other side points out that Prop. 6 will make it possible for all sorts of water conservation and storage activities to go on. Read the document and remember that there is already $2 billion set aside in Texas for water issues. It hasn’t been touched. Why not?
