Do You Mean That Oklahoma ISN’T Doing That Now?
Ken Yazel is a colorful figure in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That apparently does not take much doing because it’s … well, Oklahoma.
So Ken was elected by 62% of the vote as Tulsa County Tax Assessor. He was at a meeting on how they were going to fund a new jail and Yazel had himself a dandy idea. Back in the 1970’s the Los Angeles Police Chief suggested that airplane hijackers “be arrested and immediately hanged at the airport with due process of law.”
Even though that comment earned the police chief the title of Crazy Ed, Yazel remembered it and has been saving it to use until right damn now.
Yazel, 69, said Tuesday that he was not advocating public hangings but also did not back away from the statement.
“The bad guys are committing a crime and then getting out and committing it again,” he said.“You hang them in the public square. Then they won’t do it again. Neither will some of their friends watching.”
Yazel said his remarks Monday were made after a long discussion regarding scheduling of jury trials, jail overcrowding and its associated costs, and ways to reduce crime.
“They were arguing about how to fund or not fund the jail,” Yazel said. “The point is you’re either going to have to lock them up or do something to stop this high crime rate. I want speedy justice and swiftness so we don’t have to arrest them again.”
Well, it certainly works for Isis. Gotta work for Oklahoma.
Thanks to Larry for the heads up.
Well, if he’s so into economics, swift punishment, and deterrence, I’m surprised he hasn’t called for drawing, quartering, and cannibalizing for the sustenance of the non-capital crime committers. If you forgo investigations and trials and innocent-till-proven-guilty, why not just go with barbarism to its logical end result? What an Idi-yote….
1I wonder how Ed lives out these fantasies in his tax assessing work. Puts a whole new twist on the delinquent tax lists in Tulsa county.
2There is nothing too crazy to say if it will get you the attention you crave.
3I wonder what he thinks should become of tax cheats like most of the corporations on welfare.
4When I was a chile, my Republican Uncle, my sainted mother’s brother, opined to my sainted father much the same thought. We should execute (I bet he almost said exterminate, but caught himself) criminals rather than lock them up so as to save the cost of caring for them. Not much has changed since 1961.
51) Capital punishment has been shown to be ineffective as a warning to potential bad guys and possibly to increase violence by making killing more socially acceptable.
2) Is Ken Yazel the famous Texan who moved to Oklahoma and thereby raised the IQ of both states?
3) My sympathy for the few Okies I know.
6Hang ’em now appeal later. That’s due process?
7They used to have public hangings of pickpockets in England back in the day. The #1 place to get your pocket picked – was at public hangings.
So, I doubt the deterrence effect for some criminals. However, if we imposed capital punishment on CEOs whose corporations were convicted of serious crimes, we might see some behavior changes…
8How would he feel if he had been accused of molesting farm animals and he was dragged out of his office and tried, convicted, and punished in the public square.
I reckon I can find a whole plane load of people who would swear they saw him with his pants around his ankles out in the barn.
9Constitution? What Constitution?
10I think that this clown’s real name is Ken YAHOO.
11g, would that be the one written by their God or Jesus? I forgot to whom they gave the credit. Considering the draconian measures they are recommending, maybe it was Leviticus who wrote their version.
That, or it’s April 1st and Miss Juanita Jean is pranking us. It’s tough telling whether it’s parody or GOP ‘thinking,’ so maybe Miss JJ is testing us today on our skills of discerning between Obama Derangement Syndrome and Republican follies du jour.
12The Tealiban man! The due process out the window smarty pants! The Tea-li, Tea-li, Tea-liban o-rama maister! The Party of Life but I kill you if I think you did it Tealiban maister!
13Oooooooo, how Henry the Eighth! That tubular Tudor was blatantly psychotic toward the end of his reign and he did exactly what Old Ed fantasizes. He ended up hated to the max. Now, really, Ed. Can you possibly learn anything from Old Henry?
14Why do ALL these ‘Murikkkan Taliban look just like the Rev. John Hagee from San Antonio?
Their cretin followers must all share some weird defective mutated gene.

15@g: yah beat me by a bunch, but allow me the pleasure of the misquote: “Constitution? We doan need no stinking Constitution.”
16Violence is the right-wing’s pornography. They want to bomb other countries, especially those with tan people. They think that women and children need corporal punishment in order to make them behave. They want the death penalty for minor crimes (including being gay, which they consider a major crime), but they think businesses whose practices kill people should be let off.
Their overall philosophy seems to be that if you’re not a well-off white man you should be either dead or beaten.
17I was thinking this yokel looks a lot like a Jeb Bush character.
@LynnN … I think you pretty much nailed it!!
18Would that apply to Rick Perry? He is a criminal, too.
19He’s right about one thing. If you hang them in the public square, I’m sure they won’t be able to come back to commit another crime.
