Dems Take the Senate

January 06, 2021 By: El Jefe Category: 2020 Election

Thought it hasn’t hit the major networks yet, Decision Desk just called the race for Ossoff.  With that win, the Dems are at 50.  With Harris as President of the Senate, Dems take control.

  1. Mitch and his minions mitigated ~

…projections by Vox’s election partner Decision Desk. In doing so, the candidates ensured that the party will have a razor-thin 50-50 Senate majority once Vice President Kamala Harris takes office on January 20.

The results will thus fundamentally change the next two years of American politics.

After 2 months months of Trumpf losing, today is like pounding in the last nail of his coffin. And Mitch’s! I’ll drink to that!
This feels almost as good as when Obama won!

It was curious that Newsmax was calling the outcomes 15-20 minutes earlier than other networks. Don’t know how to explain that.

I was wrong about Georgia, too. I did not expect it to go Communist.

All power the the workers’ and soldiers’ soviets!

Do battle with voter suppression, and win elections! Some might say John Roberts owes Stacey Abrams dinner next time she’s in DeeCee. There’s a fine group of Texas college students who deserve a courtesy tour of the WH, too. What say you President Biden?

WaPo sez DeeCee police arrested 10 trumpers with firearms or for assaulting police. Strange to say, all were arrested and none shot in the back.

And looks like those 11,780 voters Trumpf asked Georgia to recalculate to him, voted for Warnock and Ossoff (and then some). Recalculate that repugnanticans!

  12. Has anyone besides me realized there will soon be two completely different (in philosophy, demeanor, ethics/integrity) senators with the same first name, though spelled differently. Rafael goes by Ted. The other by his real first name of Raphael.

I’ve heard that common birthdays in any particular group is more common than one would think. This hit home with me when I was payroll manager of a company with about 35 employees. Three of them had the same birthday (month/day/not year). Not only that, there were three guys with the same first name but each spelled differently (Daren, Darren, Darrin). So weird!

  13. The Surly Professor says:

Hanna@12: you’ve encountered a form of the Birthday Problem:

As for the Darrens, maybe their parents watched a lot of Bewitched back in the 60s?

  14. Jere Armen says:

Can someone answer a question for me?
Even if Warnock and Ossoff had not made senators #49 and #50, thus giving VP Harris the deciding vote, couldn’t she have exercised her Constitutional role as president of the Senate to allow senators to bring legislation to the floor that McConnell was sitting on?
I know that the House has to start all over again drafting and passing bills, since this is a new Congress, but once they send bills to the Senate, Harris can see to it that they make it to the floor for a vote, right?

  15. Harry Eagar says:

Trump declared his party today, I propose we call it the Bull Goose Party.

Meanwhile the trumpers have stormed the Capitol, in the Senate chamber. Nobody shot yet but I have hopes.

Now the armed authorities need to put down the riot in the Capitol and make this day complete.

  18. Steve from Beaverton says:

NBC just called at 5 PM E that Ossoff won by .6% which is enough to eliminate any recount. At least we have that today.

  19. john in denver says:

    Jere Armen @14 …

As President of the Senate, Harris can do whatever she wants in terms of following the rules, observing general parliamentary procedure, or becoming an autocrat.

And then, any member can object to her ruling, have a brief debate, and get a vote where a majority of those voting either uphold or dismiss her ruling.

In extreme cases, the legislative body can even bar her from the chamber… limiting her ability to be an effective presiding officer. And if they could get a 2/3rds majority, they could even oust her as a member of the chamber. Not impeached and convicted, but “ousted.” I don’t think its been done, so there isn’t legal precedent of the priority of two clauses of the Constitution.

Short version … I don’t think anyone wants to go that far.
