Commies
You know, just about the best thing that has ever happened to the gay community has happened at just the right time.
It has become communistic to be a homophobe.
The Russian government’s attitude toward the LGBT community makes it very clear that being against gays is a very communist thing to do. Yes, I am talking to you, Baptist Church.
The Russians have banned “homosexual propaganda” at the Olympics.
I am trying to think what “homosexual propaganda” is. Will and Grace? That whole Broadway Theater thing? The words fabulous, hunk hunk, and sweetie, but not the words “Do you want fries with that? and Welcome to WalMart.” Toaster ovens? Women’s softball?
Come on, what else? We need to make a list for our athletes.
Thanks to John Kwitkoski for the very cool graphic.
How soon before the bigots realize they agree with the Communists? I can’t wait to see how they twist themselves inside and out to excuse the comparison.
Popcorn anyone?
1There isn’t really much Communism in Russia today, although I’m sure that a lot of the hardcore right-wingers don’t really accept that. Putin is an authoritarian in league with rich oligarchs and the Russian Orthodox Church. It’s true that the same could be said about Brezhnev, but the Soviet Union at least had to look like they were doing things for the benefit of the workers.
2I was in Moscow in March. That whirring sound I heard at Red Square was Lenin spinning in his grave.
Wishing the Olympics many thundershowers and rainbows. I see all sorts of Chromos-the-Wonder-Kid outfits for both skating and skiing.
3Is there heterosexual propaganda? When has there ever been a demand for propaganda encouraging people to engage in sex, of any sort? There is abstinence propaganda: Don’t do it! Wait until your married! It’s sinful! You might get pregnant, contract a social disease, or get beat up by somebody’s big brother!
4The bigots will realize they agree with the Communists about gays about the same time the religious right realizes it agrees with the drug dealers about drug laws.
5@Uncle Dave: Propaganda poster:
6:
Abstinence: 99.99% effective.
..and a picture of Mary & Jesus.
What is John Boehner waiting for? We need the House of Unamerican Activities Committee back up and running. When someone makes an anti gay comment, haul them in to testify and find out what kind of commie sympathizer they might be. And fittingly, they can be punished with the only color not in the rainbow flag; black listed, blackballed…
7Is Johnny Weir still competing in the men’s ice skating? He proclaims: I’m Weir and I’m queer … oooooh, that should go over big with the Ruskies!!
I love RayS’s suggestion for a propaganda poster! LOL
Just so much hatefulness … I’m old … turning 70 on the 21st and I’m just so damned tired of all the meanness in this old world!! Doggone it, it was suppose to be so much better then this in my [our] old age!! I think it’s all the meanness and hatefulness that makes me feel older then I should feel! It just wears on a body!!
8I guess the Rainbow bridge connecting Tokyo and Yokohama would be illegal in Russia.
9Today the IOC issued a statement that any displays of you know, GAYNESS, would be considered a political demonstration and athletes could be disqualified from competition.
10The Olympic Circles do not include Orange, Indigo and Violet, so I guess that it is safe.
11I expect Bill O’Reilly will proclaim that former KGB officer Vladimir Putin was not, and has never been, a member of the Communist Party.
After all, we’ve always been at war with Eurasia.
12Thanks, Rick! Yet another outstanding idea! Commies, yikes!
13All the crazy anti-marriage fundies have already come out in praise of Russia’s anti-gay law: Pat Robertson, Bryan Fisher, NOM, some members of the Catholic church, etc.
They mostly say that America needs such a law. Keep in mind that these are the same groups/people that are working hard in Africa to help shape laws put gay people in prison and/or to death.
14it is obvious, the Olympic rings have a black circle, because without the orange the other colors don’t make rainbow!!!
15Marcia, I agree it’s long past time for this crap to be over.
But you remind me of a poem by Dorothy L. Sayers:
As I grow older and older
And totter towards the tomb,
I find that I care less and less
Who goes to bed with whom.
Intelligent and sensible woman, Dorothy L.
16Actually, this is a gambit meant to reduce the competition for the Russian athletes who just hate it when the US takes so many medals of all colors. Ten to one this jazz will virtually disappear after the Olympics.
17Love what they did in Sweden – painted the sidewalk along the front of the Russian Embassy in colors of the rainbow!
18There is so much good in the worst of us and so much bad in the best of us, that it behooves any of us to say anything about the rest of us.
19@Marsha. Johnny Weir is still competing and is hoping to go to the Olympics. He was interviewed on TV recently and said he was married to a Russia guy and has lots of fans there.
20Origuy ,
21Kinda sounds like GW’s Administration and the template for what that other feller, what was his name? you know, the Rich guy who had that Apt in Mass but an elevator for his cars? well anyway, what his admin would have looked like. The sad thing is, In this ever so black and white unedumacated World we live in, where Duck Dynasty gets awards, there is Communism and Democracy(Both bastardized beyond recognition), really handy for all those Fascist out there (Gov Good Hair, and Putin) to goose step on to world Domination.
Then tell Putin to put his shirt back on.
22I am still scratching my head over Snowden’s decision to go to one of the most oppressive societies on earth to protest
23U.S. government surveillance. Communist or not, Russia’s government wins the gold for Best Overall Suppression of civil rights. It’s something the Repugs really want to win, but darn it, we won’t let them.
@Rhea … Amen to Dorothy L. and her recognition of the fact that as we get older … who the heck cares?!?
@June … Johnny Weir and his Russian partner … hooha … that should put a kink in someone’s shorts! LOL And, it’s Marcia [Mar-see-ah] not Marsha!! I’m kinda picky about that!
24I am a long-time supporter of LGBT rights, a long-time member of the Human Rights Campaign, and I am ambivalent about US participation in the Russian Olympics. I cannot imagine telling all our great athletes who have been working so hard for four years to be competitors in the Olympics that they cannot go. But really, how would they hide their daily-dawning freedom to be who they are? Would they be safe there? Can we keep them safe?
I wonder what Russia and the Committee would do if the US official uniforms were rainbow colored?
