5University-owned? Can you imagine a university saying, “Sure, we have that. Come on in!” There would reasonably be months of negotiations about what the government can do in the space, and especially what they CAN’T do, a period of public comment, and a vote by the governing body of the university. But this is the Trump administration, and they want it NOW, and aren’t likely to tell the truth about why.

They’re probably ready for head-to-head competition between the groups funded under this project. That in no way detracts from JJ’s point: if Obama was President, Fox News and their mouth-breathing, hairy knuckle-dragging cultists would be going rabid right now.
BTW: I am not funded by DARPA and never have gotten any money from them. [Of course, that’s just what they’d make me say if they wanted to make the request seem less sinister. If this does divert attention, will any DARPA folks please send me some money?]

20I have no idea what they’re doing but I do know this: if DC is putting their yuppity-yups in tunnels deep underground, I want a deep basement to put myownself in. Pronto.
21I don’t think it’s anything nearly as exotic as some here would have us believe. A more plausible theory is that they’re looking for….office space. Put all federal employees underground and (1) hope that a bunch of them quit, (2) sell all that office space they now occupy.

23Why not use all those tunnels in southern Nevada? It appears that they aren’t going to be used any time soon for their intended purpose of storing nuclear waste. Might as well get some return on the cost of building them. AND, we already own them, so no added costs! (Admittedly that lack of corruption opportunity may be a negative for this administration.)
24Wait a damn minute! Isn’t there something like that in West Virginia or in Virginia on the state line with West Virginia? It poses as a resort. And it been used before so it is viable.
