Welcome to The World's Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, Inc.
My name is Susan DuQuesnay Bankston. I live in Richmond, Texas, in the heart of Tom DeLay's old district. It's nuttier than squirrel poop here.
I am honored and privileged to know Miss Juanita Jean Herownself, hairdresser extraordinary and political maven. Since she does not have time to fiddle with this internet stuff, I type her website for her and you can read it if you want to. If you don't, she truly does not give a big bear's butt.
A lot of what I post here has to do with local politics, but you probably have the same folks in your local government.
This ain't a blog. Blogs are way too trendy for me. This is a professional political organization.
I hate to belabor the point, but The Donald done stepped in it again by allegedly mocking a reporter with disabilities who refuted most of what Trump claimed about the “thousands of people in New Jersey” cheering the fall of the twin towers.
1Of course he is vehemently denying any intent to mock, but once again, he’s on video doing it. At what point will the media or the republican party put an end to this circus of hate? His hate and fear mongering have taken the republican label to new depths( if that is possible) and has damaged our nation’s image and reputation beyond belief.
@Maryelle: I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for the
2GOP convention. It’s gonna be a doozy!
Holiday cheer to everyone! The TVs are off and the music is on in our house. We can’t bear one more Black Friday commercial, while we take comfort in the notion that we are sane enough to stay home today. Also staying away from any on-line shopping. Is it really a bargain, if we don’t need it?
Jane came up with a brilliant plan to spare us the pain of over eating this year. In the past, a little spoonful of this, a touch of that and a taste of everything still resulted in a daunting plateful of gluttony. This year we built one plate and split it. Perfect. Lucky for me that we share our table with dedicated liberals, so I wasn’t booed from the table with shouts of “man up and buy bigger pants.”
Anyone else notice that the standard snacilbupeR response to any sane suggestion is: “man up and do the opposite”? Bet President Obama has noticed.
3I read on The Hill today that the Republican elites are panicking that Trump might actually win the nomination. Looks like Frankenstein’s monster is on the loose and the villagers are picking up their torches and pitchforks. Sorry, folks. You created him. He’s yours.
4Shared the “snacilbupeR” appellation with the table of Democrats at my brother & SIL’s place south of San Francisco. Having a great Thanksgiving!
5So on this coming Monday, I’m putting in my last half-day at work and then getting in the car and moving to Austin. Getting out of Iowa in the nick of time . . . the next two months are going to be very strange in Iowa. But I guess strange in Iowa is every day in Austin.
Hope to meet ya all.
6@Rikon…outta the frying pan, into the fire! Gawd knows we’ve got our share of ID10T snacilbupeRs here in Texas!
7BarbinDC, their convention will be a three ring circus, and one can only hope that they don’t nominate Trump, who will be so PO’ed that he will immediately run as an independent, splitting the rwnjs vote and ensuring a Democratic victory.
8TexasTrailer, they may be panicking, but not to the extent that they are willing to do anything to rein in their base. They continue to use hate and scare tactics and drive their base into an idiotic feeding frenzy on everything from Muslims to the imaginary War on Christmas.
The GOP problem is that the base is starting to feed on the GOP.
9maryell:
the GOP created Trump, and now they’re stuck with him. their only hope is that he bombs when the caucuses and primaries start. and yes, the GOP revolution has started to feed on itself. wouldn’t take much to get the old guillotine out, replace the ropes, sharpen the blade and grease the tracks.
10Rikon Snow, you can find me (in Austin) on Facebook at Marge Wood, the one who attended Abilene Christian College. Try not to hold it against me. You’ve heard of South Austin? Well, we live in way way south Austin, city council district 5, in (sigh) Lamar Smith’s congressional district. Be sure and come to our next meeting of South Travis United Democrats, Dec 15, when Ronnie Dugger, originator of TEXAS OBSERVER, will speak. We meet at Tres Amigos at corner of Slaughter and Manchaca. Drive carefully. I’ll be looking for you!
11p.s. Anyone else in Austin is welcome to our meeting too, which is at 6ish. I really would love to see some of you.
12I know this is a little long, but bear with me. Yesterday when I dropped my mother and stepdad off at the family Thanksgiving get together, everyone was all astir over some photos they were passing around showing all of the past presidents standing in front of the American flag. And then there was a picture of Obama standing in front of a golden curtain. All of my ignorant, hateful family were convinced that he was standing in front of a Muslim prayer rug instead of the flag. I pointed out that (1) Muslim prayer rugs were on the floor, not as photo op backdrops; and (2) what they were actually looking at were the golden curtains in the East room of the White House. I proceeded to pull up numerous photos of St. Ronnie standing in front of the same curtains. This was confusing to my ignorant GOP family. Seriously, they were confused because they were convinced that Obama was standing in front of a Muslim prayer rug because Rush told them about it. Oy.
Anyhoo … when I returned hours later to pick up my mother and stepdad, I was immediately beset and informed that Obama had turned the curtains into a Muslim prayer rug.
Obviously!!
Obama was going around turning all the curtains in the White House into Muslim prayer rugs!!!!
There is nothing we can do with these people. They are beyond reason. There is no appeal we can make. There is no argument that will resonate.
But we liberals need to understand the mindset (and I use the term mind loosely). How do we work in a (small D) democratic society with people who are willfully ignorant? I don’t know.
13Going from iowa to Austin,Minn is a step in the wrong direction.
14Mark J –
I was going to suggest you have your family search Google Images for “Obama” “flag,” but thought I better check the results myself first. You will find plenty of photos with Obama in front of the flag (who would have guessed?), but it then quickly goes off the rails with right wing bizarro depictions concocted at a Photoshop Tea Party.
(psst – I heard they’re not just prayer rugs, Obama’s got the Pentagon working on STEALTH FLYING CARPETS!)
15Mark J, if you don’t wrangle an invite to Hawaii next year, Jane says you’re welcome to adopt a place at our table. We can’t promise tropical weather, but if you like to snowshoe or ski, we’re located in back country paradise.
As for the “willfully ignorant,” they’re composed of the same groups that vote against their own interests. How to educate them and drag them along in the democratic process is the long, slow challenge. We feel your pain, man. Can’t get them to learn about climate change, but they’ll latch onto some cockamamie conspiracy theory with the ferocity of a wolverine.
16Austin,Minn is where the SPAM-mystery meat in a can-museum is located. Okay,it makes more sense now.
17Mark J: You’ve hit that proverbial nail on its head. Do you think they could Google “prayer rug” and look at the pictures that come up? They seem ready to believe any right wing crap they see on the internet, so why not rugs that don’t look anything like gold damask drapes!
They hate. Bottom line. They have no interest in the truth whatsoever. Notice how they shifted their logic line to suit their hate? Typical. THEY are the true danger to this nation. THEY need to be purged from our national politics. And however it can be achieved, no matter how tedious and time consuming and monotonous it becomes, these people must be shamed, must be highlighted as the ignorant, hate-filled rubes that they most certainly are.
Rant over.
18Maryelle –
Yeah, that clip of Trump mocking the reporter is the most offensive thing I’ve seen since Limbaugh did exactly the same thing, making fun of Michael J. Fox’es MS.
Not only is this guy an overfilled trash bag of sewage runoff; he’s not even original. Anyone who would seriously consider voting for him should be placed on a mandatory 72-hour psych hold.
19With Donald Drumpf (his real German name) belittleing a physically disabled man, I wonder how “our wounded warriors” take that slam? How could he be Commander in Chief?
20Thanks to every one for the replies. I don’t mean to be rude at all but I don’t think you understand the depth of the problem.
@Rick, @JAKVirgina, you say that I should have my family do a google search. But my family doesn’t do a google search. Google is evil. Instead, they use Christian search engines that filter the results. Probably you didn’t know that these things existed, but they do. For instance, seekfind.org. A favorite among the evangelicals. (There are so many others.) seekfind.org is based on Matthew 7 — “seek and ye shall find.” Go to seekfind.org and type in “obama” and the first result: “Is Obama The Antichrist?”
Seriously, there are many “Christian” internet search options that don’t return any results that might challenge their world view.
They live in an increasingly insular world, even as the world has expanded exponentially for the rest of us.
How do we coexist with these ignorant bags of hate-filled pus? (Sorry, still a little prickly after yesterday.) I haven’t figured it out yet. They live in a world of their own creation and nothing, certainly not reality, will penetrate their bubble.
21Choice reading:
“But I am not allowed to put political signs in my yard or stickers on my car because it will offend my students and my congregants if they know how I truly believe, even though my gun toting friends can post all the memes promoting ignorance and violence they want, without fear. So instead, I will write an article and tell the whole damn world the truth…”
And tell the truth she did.
“I find it very hard to believe that you can read the Bible and vote Republican right now. Intolerance and hatred are not in the teachings of my Christ,” she said before slamming the Republican field of presidential wannabes.
“I think Republican candidates are mostly ignorant and ridiculous in everything they say, and they absolutely do not represent my Christian values of love and mission.”
She went on to profess her support of freedom of speech and freedom of religion for everyone, including non-Christians, and then she used her expertise as a historian and pastor to rip conservatives for trying to establish a theocracy.
“I live my life for God, but I do not think God belongs in our Constitution. Separation of church and state; It’s a thing. Look it up.”
She then took aim at conservative gun nuts and gave them a piece of her mind.
“You cannot believe that guns are the way to save the world if you study Christ’s teachings. Peace, love, giving, acceptance, forgiveness; Christ taught all these things. I find no red scriptures on gun ownership or arming for peace. They just aren’t there. Get over it. You are not being a Christian if you put your faith in guns. How dare you post pro-gun propaganda after a school shooting. It is insensitive, and offensive, and immoral. Christ would NOT approve. People carrying guns are NOT saving lives. But the free availability of guns in this country is causing deaths which are reaching viral proportions. Enough is enough. I don’t care about your damned right to own guns. I am tired of children dying in this great country.”
After defending the right of same-sex couples to get married by citing the 14th Amendment and listing real problems like climate change, starvation, and mass shootings that we have to deal with, Tubbs spells out what “traditional” marriage is according to the Bible.
“Traditional marriage in the Bible is polygamous. Get a Bible and read it before you try to use it to support your hatred and intolerance.”
And to conclude her list, Tubbs takes a whack at conservatives who revere the Confederate flag.
“The confederate flag is racist. It was flown by treasonous terrorists who fired on their own country and supported the enslavement of human beings. They lost that war and it is time to move on. If you want to show your southern pride, fly an American flag and be the true patriot you claim to be. Eat some biscuits and gravy and visit your dear old grandma. Go put flowers on the grave of your grandpa who probably fought for your right to grow up privileged. And show some appreciation for the great country you live in.”
She signs off by vowing to take action by writing her congressman and continuing her study of scholarly works to educate herself on the issues this country faces and to continue being a true Christian — unlike the fake ones that Republicans pretend to be.
We need more people like Melanie Tubbs to stand up and fight back. For too long, sane southerners have had to put up with intolerance, hate, and stupidity in their churches and governments instead of moving forward with the rest of the nation into the 21st century. It’s time for them to take back the South and drag it kicking and screaming into reality. And they should look to Tubbs for inspiration instead of living in fear.
22Here’s the link to what I posted above. I meant to only post the link, but my iPad has a mind of its own, or maybe no mind at all? (Is it Republican?)

23Active shooter in Colorado Springs, officers injured. This is taking place outside the Planned Parenthood.
24Mark J: The answer you seek is in your own words, “… they live in world of their own creation…”. And, sadly, they refuse to consider any idea they deem in conflict with that world. They are your family though. In that you have my sympathy. But you are not alone. Many families have the same conflicts as yours. You cannot make them see what they refuse to see. It is foolhardy to try. Sorry.
25I resolved to spend the day kicking back — until I got bored. But it was a warm day so when Heather asked mc to pick up a prescription at the pharmacy, I decided to take the bike. Musta been a Black Friday sale at the pharmacy because there was bit of a line but since it was almost all old phartz like me we passed the time yakking about telephones that use pulses instead of tones. And the man I was yakking with was picking up for his wife, Thelma, we had fun with the clerk about who we were identifying as.
I made too much pumpkin pie filling Wednesday night. I had enough for 1-1/4 9 inch pies but the crust recipe is for 2 9-inch crusts. So I thought if I could locate a 6-inch pie plate then I would waste less so I biked down to Weaver’s (the Amish Walmart) but ended up with some shallow tin foil pans. Then took the long way to the feed mill (by way of Tattletown Road) to get some suet for the bird feeders and then back home along the creek road.
The 2 shallow pies are in the oven and there are leftover ham, collards, & yams (actualy sweet potatoes) to use for supper.
Da Chumpster says he wasn’t mocking a disabled person, just doing his normal imitation of someone he’s mocking. He’s the turd floating in the punch bowl at the Republican convention.
26Clearly until I digest today’s portion of the Thanksgiving graze my brain will not willingly connect two coherent thoughts.
Good wishes to the patrons.
Have a safe drive home. Elvis has left the building. Good night.
27apropos of absolutely nothing:
The advice of Sam Rayburn, the legendary Speaker of the House to rookie congressmen: Son, if you cant drink their whiskey, take their money, screw their women, and then vote against em in the morning, you dont belong in politics.
28The republican party has become the modern day Klan. They no longer feel the need to hide under those sheets when they have a political party, major newspapers and a TV network dedicated to their cause: white male power.
29@Mark J—You’re right. I had no idea there were Christian search engines. But that certainly explains a lot of the ignorance and misinformation (or is it DISinformation) out there. I agree with you about the impossibility of changing those people’s minds. When even the mainstream GOP itself lives in its own parallel universe where up is down and the sky is green despite all facts to the contrary, what hope is there for dissuading any of them from their “beliefs.”
30Mark j, I hear ya, buddy! Prozac in the water supply! I find a lot of clinical depression among these people.
