Behind Closed Doors
San Antonio City Councilwoman Elise Chan sunk a promising political career when she let her true colors come out of the closet.
Homosexuality is “so disgusting!” San Antonio District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan told her staff. Chan also said she believes homosexuality is a choice, that gay people “take hormone shots,” and that gay people should be “banned” from adopting or raising children.
A staffer taped her during the meeting where she even discussed ways to cover-up her beliefs if they seemed too strong for the community.
She wants to be mayor of San Antonio.
Yeah, right after we sale the Alamo, and the comments stop on her Facebook page.
Thanks to Bernard for the heads up.
After visiting her FB page….
1“Obama has led many to think they can go against our constitution and get by with it.”
“IF you left us alone, and let us go about our normal routines, nobody was particularly bothering you. But you needed CENTER STAGE as if you earned it or something. YOU DID NOT. ”
This nation was BUILT on a having a BETTER WAY. We got famous for being one of the FEW NATIONS that had a BETTER WAY! NOW they want to make it illegal to EVEN suggest there is anything BUT the BROAD PATH of SELF-DESTRUCTION!”
smh- Sure wish someone would find a vaccine…
Dumb, insensitive public servant.
2Another DINO. Be honest and switch parties. Then you can spout without constraint.
3What in the name of all that’s wonderful has “going against the Constitution” got to do with this? What an idiot!
4How very clever of Councilwoman Chan to choose to be born female and straight and at a time when people of her ethnic origin are considered to be capable of more than laundry and building railroads, also too.
5It is incomprehensible that anyone in this country, in this century, who has any kind of education doesn’t understand that this is NOT a choice, it is an accident of birth, like having blue eyes or an I.Q. above 60.

7She wants to be mayor of San Antonio? Good luck with that. She’s got less chance than my cats, and they’re sleeping.
8Dear Councilwoman Dingbat, Gross stoopidity, like you have,is a CHOICE. You CHOOSE to be ignorant because your ignorant constituents don’t like smart, progressive candidates. They like to feel superior to their representatives. Why make it so easy for them? Do you hold the door open for burglars? I’ll just bet you do because it would tax your brain to have to use it for more than a hat rack, and we know how much you nutjobs hate taxes. Make America proud of you. Vote no new TEXAS.
9@Mel, Chan is a Republican, through and through.
She has to have been living under a rock to not realize that a majority of young people think LGBT people should have the exact same rights as the rest of the people, including marriage. To have stated her warped views in front of her staff (primarily young people) is beyond stupid, but I’m glad she let her real feelings known. This is not the first time she revealed her ignorance, but is the worst instance.
I have read that Chan wanted to be a state senator, perhaps going after Donna Campbell’s seat. They are a lot alike; both are educated idiots. A telephone pollster was testing Chan’s name recognition against Campbell’s and Mike Novak’s on Thursday and Friday while people were reading the first story of Chan’s rant, which was published on-line Thursday and in print on Friday.
10Oh good, I may get to vote against Chan and Campbell.
11Could it be possible that Ms. Chan’s remarks reflect her religious beliefs or training? Could it be that her experiences have been so insular that she cannot see (apart from any other consideration, and their are plenty!) how impolitic the use of the appelation “disgusting” is?
12“understand that this is NOT a choice,”
I’ve never understood what difference that is supposed to make. I don’t care, I am against discriminating against people on the basis of private consenting acts, especially those which are an expression of love. It may be for some people a choice, it may not be for others. In neither case shopuld it be any reason to discriminate, let alone abuse anybody.
13I herd just today that San Antonio, Texas is home to more gays that any other city in the US. While I find that a bit hard to believe, I do wonder if Chan has heard that and if that alters her plans to become mayor any.
14Some people say of homosexuals, “I don’t want to think about what they do!” My reply to them is that I don’t want to think about what YOU do, and somehow I manage to avoid it. Most of us have better things to do with our time.
Anyone who thinks that homosexuality is a choice and that gays “take hormone shots” should be disqualified from public office on the grounds of willful ignorance. There’s just not much excuse.
15So, I chose to be gay? And, I “take hormone shots”? It amazes me how “straight” folks keep coming up with one doozy after another. Goodbye Ms. Chan…
16Someday,if we could just rid all governments of these rwnj,we could put these “choice” issues to bed once and for all. These are wedge issues for religious freaks, always have been and always will be. The religious right, which is neither religious or right, believes their bible and their constitution allows discrimination based on color, sexual orientation, gender and whatever the issue of the day happens to be.
17On her FB page:
I represent 140,000 people who live on San Antonio’s Northside.
I guess not the gay ones, though.
18Adrian, careful about the “straight” folks comments, it’s been my observation that the most bellicose remarks regarding LGBT individuals often come from people who are intent on hiding in their own closet. Hum, I wonder what kind of pumps we might locate in Ms Chan’s closet? I’ve wondered about more than a few politicians closests just because they seemed so intent on climbing into other folks private spaces.
Rhea, Mooser, Mike, Maryell, I’m with you. The heart wants what the heart wants and I for one think no person has the right to get in the way of what happens between consenting adults who are fortunate enough to have found someone to love.
19From a friend: The ONLY time a person’s sexual orientation matters is when they are naked… in bed… with YOU!
20Thanks to all the salon clients above. You’ve said it so much better than I could. I’ve been voting for a VERY long time and have never seen a candidate running for office on the basis of their preferences in the bedroom — nor do I want to. What I really want is to be able to vote for a candidate who is at least as smart as I am — hopefully a whole lot smarter. That disqualifies Ms. Chan right off the top.
21George Takei calls her an “Ignoranus” – combining the mental skills and personality (A..H…) traits
22This lady did not try to apologize for her comments and instead attack the staff person who leaked her comments http://www.kens5.com/news/Councilwoman-Chan-responds-to-anti-gay-controversy-220175121.html
Chan’s remarks were recorded during a closed meeting regarding San Antonio’s nondiscrimination ordinance.
23“The comments from the staff meeting on May 21st were and are my personal opinions and thoughts as guaranteed to me by the 1st amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It is unfortunate that a former member of my D9 Council team betrayed the trust of my staff members and me. I will fight, I will always fight for our freedom of speech, especially in a private setting.”
Chan, unfortunately, is typical of a certain part of San Antonio. NOT where I live.
