Bastrop Threatened by Parks and Wildlife “Prescribed” Burn
All Texas agencies are run by morons. In drought conditions, some genius at Texas Parks and Wildlife thought it was a really good idea to light a fire in Bastrop State Park. The fire rapidly burned out of control, and now homes in the Bastrop area are being evacuated. Greg Abbott is in Houston lying about the 2020 election and the COVID pandemic, unavailable to do his fucking job.

This new Bastrop wildfire is the second major one in a decade. The first big one started with high winds downing power lines in 2011. The smoke from it was quite noticeable here.
I’m not surprised others are flaring up now, here in the region [So&Cent TX]; we’ve been in some serious drought with record high temperatures, and winds too.
I’ve been having to use my air conditioning quite often all ‘winter’. Even more unusual than normal.
How many of y’all use the A/C through the winter?
But don’t dare mention climate change/global warming in front of ~60% of Texans…

2Mike@1. Yes. Labor Day weekend of 2011. I smelled smoke almost constantly on 9/4/11 as I drove from Austin to my then home in Louisiana. There were fires burning all across east Texas that day. When I headed north out of Austin I could see smoke columns from both Bastrop and Pflugerville. I was directed away from my planned path home by a fire near Marshall TX that day as well.
My DIL is a clinical social worker/therapist in Austin who worked with survivors of the Bastrop Complex fire who lost everything. I could see the effect that had on her. I hadn’t heard about this event until the wee hours of this morning. I’m not looking forward to telling her about this today.
3Its getting to the point that say ‘I live in Texas’ is equivalent to saying ‘Hi, I’m St00pid!’ or at best ‘I support & vote for st00pid’.
4Magats believe they are so thoroughly in control of Texas they can demand fire do what they want. I guess not.
5The last Bastrop fire took two houses in a family type compound on a large plot of beautiful land. All of the trees were black and scorched – the home was reduced to ashes.
In order to help, a few friends of mine borrowed a screen from an archaeologist and sifted through ash, square foot by square foot, looking for anything that could be salvaged. Jewelry, etc. There was nothing. They lost everything. I remember spotting a paperback book that was made of ash. The cover was still visible, but when I leaned down to pick it up, it disinigrated.
They rebuilt their homes and their lives. They can see these flames from their window this morning.

The fruits of 25 year Republican rule over Texas and her beautiful lands are being reaped as we speak. The grid, the Houston flooding, the fires, the cancer clusters, the high price of energy, etc. It will continue to spiral until Texas voters demand governance over politics.
6Conservative “logic” in action. If we change the name from “controlled” burns to prescribed burns, that will fool those pesky winds.

9My brother in law spent ~15 years building his home outside of Bastrop. Most of the labor was his own. It wasn’t a mansion, but he’d put a lot of nice details in it. The day the previous Bastrop fire broke out, the State Police woke him up from a nap. He had time to get his wallet, keys, and dog before driving away. When he returned, weeks later, the metal roof was flat on the concrete slab. The thought of rebuilding was too much to contemplate. He moved to Mississippi.
10Thoughtful governing is clearly not in abbutt’s skillset. In fact, that goes for his entire administration. Of course you all know that. I do feel sorry for Texans that are rational and caring, which eliminates probably all repugnanticans.

12It’s all a matter of timing. Greg Abbott should have thought of this last year when the power grid went down, and directed freezing citizens without electricity to state park forest fire “warming centers.”

15The local Austin news mentioned that the prescribed fire which got out of control was approved by a “certified burn master”.
Well, maybe he needs to be de-certified – who would approve a burn with 35-40 mph winds. I don’t think this is rocket science. I suspect that the whole thing was a product of a bunch of Aggies.
This State is in need of some psychological help. We are rapidly going down the rabbit hole if ignorance and until the voters of Texas wake up it will continue to get worse.
