Back from the Brink

May 07, 2017 By: El Jefe Category: 2016 Election, Trump

Major media is now reporting that, in France, non-establishment but centrist Emanuel Macron has decisively defeated Trump-like, anti-immigrant candidate Marine LePen.  Hacking of Macron’s campaign seems to have had little effect on the outcome.  Is this the beginning of western civilization pulling back from the brink of hate-filled, racist, authoritarianism that peaked with the election of reality television star Donald Trump as president of the US?

The French seemed to have noted both the oops of the Brexit in GB and the bizarre factions in the US that produced Donnie. Viva La France!

Marine and Donnie hijacked the concept of populism. While it is obvious those two lie, it is confusing that media continues to refer to them as populists.

I think people have realized that:
    – it can happen here
    – the results would be terrible.

  4. Perhaps Brexit & Trump served to shine a burning bright spotlight on the reality of their lies, the unspoken, unintended consequences which occurred along with the intended change in policy. Bad lies with a heaping helping of invisible lies.

Wow! Now lets see if Trump invites Macron to the White House with all the enthusiasm he has shown for inviting dictators!

  6. I’d been watching this election closely to determine whether French voters are as gullible about buying BS from lying, hate-peddling, politicians as many Americans were when they voted to make Trump POTUS in 2016, and I am very happy that they’re not. This is a wonderful day for the world! If I were a drinking person, I’d open a bottle of bubbly. I’ll settle for the elation and relief I’m feeling about Marine Le Pen being denied the right to become the new president of France. Macron beat her like she stole something!!!

…or it shows that there is a larger percent of intelligent voters in France.

  8. I am sure the French saw what a mess we ended up in and wisely opted to run like hell. I’m so glad they had a good result from their election.

Putin may have overreached this time — and inoculated the French people. The Russian hackers didn’t even try to cover their tracks either here or in France — so, given the very obvious US result, the French said, “Non, je ne crois pas.” And good for them.

    This time.

Russia will get better at it over time. We [and Europe] need to be very, very careful. Putin is nothing if not resourceful.
    And persistent.

    Viva La France!
The French people have shown intelligence not shown by too many American voters. The didn’t listen to the lies. They caught the hacking.

  12. Deb, that’s funny. Sad for us, but funny. I think Mae West and WC Fields both said something like that too.

I join the rest of you in feeling relief that Putie and the right/white/NaziKKK types have been stopped, first in the Netherlands and now France. There are billions more good people than evil. It’s the ignorant fearful ones we need to help out.

The more I look at France and then at us the more I conclude that this country has become something that would infuriate the Founders no end – namely, the U.S. of A. has become Exhibit A, The Horrible Example. For that I say, “Non, je ne crois pas.” Vive le resistance!

Unfortunately, I have come to believe that the bell curve representing the American IQ has flatlined and has become
fertile fodder for purveyors of right wing propaganda.

  16. We can only hope. Perhaps the countries with more thinking people are seeing what a circus this country has become Perhaps they are seeing that progress is preferential to reverting backward in time. I don’t know, but it gives me a glimmer of hope for the 2018 elections that may also rid us of this cancer that occupies the WH.

  17. WA Skeptic says:

Since France suffered under the Nazis during WWII, I am amazed that the Le Pen faction has as much traction as it has. I’m glad they managed to draw back from their precipice, but I’m worried that we’ve flung ourselves over it.

We fought 70 years ago to defeat the Fascists in power at that time, and yet we’ve allowed neo-fascists to proliferate in our country to the point that they feel empowered to threaten political opponents with “2nd Amendment” solutions. What kind of people have we become?
