Another One

Lamar Smith, the longtime Republican congressman from the Texas 21st (think San Antonio) is retiring.  It’s not a shock, but it is a small surprise.

The 21st is called a safe Republican seat but, who knows nowadays?

Donna Campbell is going to run. She’s a faux-Christian with no knowledge of government and thinks of women as second-class so she’ll fit right with the GOP

  3. I think I can see your smile from here in Olympia, Miss Juanitajean. I’m a Dodger fan, but other than that, life is getting better.

The GOP has but two values: greed and intolerance. I won’t miss any of these people.

    Good riddance to Lamar Smith.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Valero/Tesoro/Exxon) is one of the chief, and most powerful, climate change deniers and anti-science people in our government. Odd he’s exiting now.

BTW, TX-21’s geographic extent is far, far greater than the small finger down into San Antonio’s North Central area (and another finger up to Austin’s West-Central and West areas).
It extends North almost to Marble Falls and all the way West to Real County (which has all of two towns with names most of y’all have never heard of, well, maybe Camp Wood (pop 702), site of GWB’s rejiggered military resume (by Rove & Co.?)).
TX-21 is a prime example of TX gerrymandering. Smith gets 57-93% vote margins…

Please tell me that RWNJ TX-25-Senator teabagger darlin’ Donna Campbell isn’t looking to slide into this US Rep seat.
Aside- her Wiki page has her living New Braunfels and working in Columbus, TX, I used to travel a lot for work, but I can’t imagine doing that commute long term (I even drove much of that same route at times).

  6. the 21s is so crooked it still hasn’t been adequately described here in the comments.

it also includes downtown austin and UT.

and it is still safe seat for repubs. recent smith victories have been in the 70-30 range.

  7. Lamar will not be missed! Hopefully all the D’s that get elected will be good enough to erase his memory altogether.

I live in about the farthest west end of Lamar’s district. Sandridge is right, not much out here to speak of and pretty solid red on first look. However TX21 Indivisible has been working hard out here and there are far more of us than you might think. Still not a majority, but trying to be as loud as we can. Lamar doesn’t care about “them librul cities” and depends on the extreme rural areas for votes. We will be glad to see him go, and have some hope for a handful of Dem challengers.
We need to make sure there is no such thing as a safe republican district, or anything else.

Is it really necessary for Texas to export all this wingnut stoopidity to America? I think we all got what Texans wingnuts were trying to say with just one application of Gohmert. The other 500 or so wingnut congressweasels are definite overkill.

South Dakota and Alaska and maybe Wyoming only get one moron representative.

    Sandridge –
Correct me if I am wrong but did you just say that the Texas Lege gave the finger to San Antonio and Austin? I can well believe it.

  11. Joel, Yep.

TrulyTexan, Yep, Lamar does depend on those SA & A city ‘fingers’ for donors though, they contain many corporate HQ’s and some of the wealthiest residential areas.
But the 21st’s still redder than the 23rd (now held by Will Hurd, (R-CIA). The 23rd has been a switcheroo in the past, even with gerrymandering, but the Dems can’t seem to get an attractive, winnable candidate there.
The 23rd is far larger than the 21st, and also fingers San Antonio, but goes all the way to El Paso too! An 800+ mile long district, for you urban and other minor state critters. It’s also Hispanic majority, so, so much for the Dems future ‘great brown hope’.
Good luck in turning the tide.

e platypus onion, But we have an ag-style surplus Rethug production problem you wouldn’t believe, so we have to export tons of them to keep from getting buried. Or maybe it’s a ranch and feedlot waste product problem…

Bob Boland, I do try to choose my words wisely and wryly at times…
