And Whose Mind Would You Be Talking About?

Ben Carson, y’all.

“I think poverty to a large extent is also a state of mind.”

No, but brutal ignorance, indifference, and insensitivity most definitely are.

Honestly, there’s something wrong with that guy.

I squated down and crossed my legs
    Focusing on my chi
Threw away that tired, old “ahhhmmm”
    And chanted “Pahhverrteee”.

  2. RepubAnon says:

Yes, the state of mind one’s in because one can’t pay the rent and still have anything left for food, or to buy medicine for a sick child, or get that funny-looking mole checked…

  3. Teh Gerg says:

Ben Carson’s problem is simple: he’s a stupid, delusional a$$hole. This extends to Trump, his administration, and his voters.

  4. Says a conman who begs others to give him money and they do! And for no really good reason.

  5. Maymoon says:

I agree, what is wrong will this guy? Living in poverty is poverty, end of sentence. There are actually guidelines for this ‘state of mind’. Amazing.

My God, how did this nincompoop get through medical school?
We have got to get rid of these Repuglican morons before there is no country left to save.

  7. ForwardG says:

“When wealth is passed off as merit, bad luck is seen as bad character. This is how ideologues justify punishing the sick and the poor. But poverty is neither a crime nor a character flaw. Stigmatize those who let people die, not those who struggle to live.” — Sarah Kendzior

  8. The States Of Mind Of Poverty:

Sad: When you can’t afford the gift your child wanted for her birthday

Depressed: When the refrigerator is empty AND rent is due

Tired: From working two part time minimum wage jobs so the business owners won’t have to pay you benefits

Confused: Every time you hear millionaires discuss the reason you’re poor

  9. @Rick has the essence of the post I was preparating. Clearly he is a genius.

I would add, to Ben Carson, phuck you, you’re an a$$hole. And some day the child of poverty will not be in poverty but you, sir will still be an a$$hole.

@ForwardG, it’s worse. The fundamental/dominionists, from their Calvinist beginnings, are so mixed up that they equate wealth with holiness, not merely merit. Material goods help you identify the “elect” according to them, and those are the folks they insist will go to heaven. Ergo, wealth is not only its own earthly reward, but also and indicator of your eternal reward, and as an extension, poor people are obviously NOT members of the elect, and must be evil. The fact that this is a direct contradiction of the Gospel in their very own bible has not deterred them at all, not since Calvin himself hatched this heretical beauty about 400 years ago. It has never made sense to me, but I am not a Protestant; the pity is that many in the Catholic Church have glommed onto this heresy, and many people spout exactly this sort of crap not understanding what they are actually proclaiming. It is just awful, and is a huge part of our current problem. We may be the party of free will, but very few pastors of any stripe preach in favor of our policies or positions anymore, because we are the party of godless atheists you know, despite trying to actually care for the poor and sick and otherwise underprivileged!

  11. I’m an atheist, but I wish more people knew what Jesus (as a teacher rather than a savior) REALLY said, because a lot of them keep screwing it up, and they’re hurting other people as a result. He never said a word against gays, but he was very down on rich people and those who prayed in public to show everyone how “religious” they are.

Christianity: if Jimmy Carter wouldn’t do what you’re doing, stop and think about it.

And if you think most poor people got that way because of a moral flaw, you’re ignorant and messed up.

  12. Tilphousia says:

Poor old Ben Carson is in the final phases of dementia. So take him away gently and place in padded cell with the rest of the drooling morons in traitor trump’s illegal administration.

  13. two crows says:

Two nuts from the same tree.

Trump testified, in court, that his net worth rises and falls based on his state of mind at any given time.

So, of course Ol’ Ben said what he said. He learned at the feet of the master.

Can we be shut of these guys? Please?

    13
  14. Ages ago I did hear the phrase “an impoverished mentality.”
Frankly that’s what Trump and his ilk have. Nuff said.

  15. Writer John Scalzi grew up poor and is probably worth more than Ben Carson now. Here’s what he had to say about “state of mind”. http://whatever.scalzi.com/2017/05/25/the-poverty-state-of-mind/

  16. Damn, if I’d only known this! Okay, my rent is due in a week. I’m going to start psyching up right now so when I reach out to the manager with the cash, it will appear in my hand. Right, Mental Ben?

BTW, JAKvirginia, that is an outstanding bit of poetry.
