And It’s Not Like Texas A&M Has Any International Scholars To Spare
Henry Rousso is a 62 year old Egyptian born senior researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research. He lives in Paris. He had been invited to speak at Texas A&M’s Hagler Institute Symposium.
He was “mistakenly detained” at the airport.
According to Richard Golsan, director of the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research at Texas A&M –
“When he called me with this news two nights ago, he was waiting for customs officials to send him back to Paris as an illegal alien on the first flight out.”
After learning about the dire situation, Golsan said he immediately called university officials, leading A&M President Michael K. Young to enlist the help of Texas A&M Law School professor and director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic Fatma Marouf.
“Due to her prompt and timely intervention, Rousso was released,” Golsan said.
Holy crap, y’all, neither Egypt or France are on Trump’s list, but perhaps he tweeted “intellectuals” last night.
First Mohammed Ali, Jr. who was detained and asked, “Where did you get that name?” and “Are you a Muslim?”
Then the ICE raids in California where legal residents where dragged out of their beds and their children were terrorized. ICE lied to the city and doctored documents.
Remember when this picture outraged Republicans?
Well, now it’s the official symbol of the Republican Party.
Thanks to Scott for the heads up.
What’s head-snapping is how fast this happened.
1And the GOP acts like its business as usual. This is getting scarier by the minute.
2Got you beat, They detained Mem Fox, the best selling Children’s author for hours. She wrote Ten Little Fingers Ten Little Toes, which you’ve probably read to a child at some point in your life, it’s the top selling children’s book in Australia and a best seller around the world. She is 70, from Australia and has travelled here 116 times. The woman was on her way to a writers conference when she was detained. After this, she’ll never come again. Let that sink in!
3Here’s a link to the Mem Fox story https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/feb/25/australian-childrens-author-mem-fox-detained-by-us-border-control-i-sobbed-like-a-baby
4I hadn’t realized our war with Australia was still on going!
John Dickerson had film of a citizen’s panel from around Richmond, VA on his show this AM. Only 3 of the dozen are all for Trump. The others varied from some to oh my god no he scares the daylights out of me. They then offered suggestions on how to get himself out of this hot spot but it would mean refining what and how he does things and ten to one he can’t and won’t make that sacrifice. It would be lethal blow to his manhood. Incidentally, I am fast running out of outrage as all the outrageous stuff created by Trump and his ilk seems to have no limit whatever and feeds on itself. I cannot fathom the “free range” policy and practice that ICE and CBP seem to feel that are entitled to. Recommend an investigation into that entire bunch, particularly the office in Syracuse, NY for one. Have a horrible feeling that any day now ICE and CBP are going to kill someone and when that happens, Trump may even award them all gold medals!
5It figures they’d attack the intellectuals because nobody behind this policy has a brain in their head.
But then they always attack the intellectuals– I mean those who “love the poorly educated” as well as the fascists and dictators.
6So the GOP has become the thing they hated. Only more so.
7Deb, thx for the Mem Fox post. I used all her books in my reading program. Many of my students were undocummented.
Every reading teacher in America needs to have their class write a book for Mem Fox entitled WE ARE BETTER THAN TRUMP BECAUSE….
esp since Grandma Poss can’t make Trump disappear!
Mem Fox can be reached by mail at:
8PO Box 747, Hove,
South Australia 5048
Thank you for the address Bunny, her books are wonderful, my granddaughters and I will write her a note!
9The terrifying fallout from this is that a whole bunch of closet racists and religious bigots have been officially told that its okay to act on their beliefs.
And a significant number of them work in law enforcement of some kind.
We are going to end up with the world’s biggest cult courtesy of that buffoon in the White House.
10Whatever Donnie did at Wharton learning wasn’t part of it. Irritating some 2 billion or more people who are assets to our campuses, business community and partners in our national security efforts underscores a whole new meaning to the term counter productive. Sec HR McMasters does “get it.” As he has effectively said stop using the phrase ‘radical Islamic terrorist’ as Islam has nothing to do with “unIslamic” groups of the few intent on creating turmoil. With his own ‘logic’ Donnie could be considered as a ‘radical Christian terrorist.’ Some one please apply duct tape to Donnie’s mouth and twitter fingers for the sake of our national security.
11It would be wonderful if everyone would contact their congressmen and congresswomen, send her address and request a hand written note of apology from them. She was apologized to by email!! I suggested to mine they grow a heart and some cojones, put a pen in their hand and buy a stamp!
12On the bright side, maybe Trump (all by himself) will deal a death blow to the latter-day Republican Party. W. did them harm, but wasn’t lethal.
PS, I miss the olden days when Republicans cared about the Constitution and were respectable. (And many of them were progressive–“the Party of Lincoln.”)
13This is actually old news, from January 2017, but bears a repeat here, “Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who wrote and directed the 2017 Oscar-nominated foreign language film “The Salesman,” would not be able to enter the U.S. for the awards under President Donald Drumpf’s recently enacted travel ban…”

14I feel this is where we are headed:

15Man…I can’t wait until we start losing billions of tourism/business travel/higher education dollars a month so that everyone will see how Cheetoface von Clownstick is making America great again. Maybe then the tools from the chamber of commerce & republican congressmen will finally get off their rich, entitled fat asses and complain to the bankruptcy king that his way of doing “business” sucks. We’ll also see higher prices and lack of produce at the grocery stores considering there will be few people to pick fruits and vegetables. LOL at the farmers in eastern Washington who had humongous Trump signs.
16Also, how amazing is that they are detaining people from countries who aren’t even from the original list of 7 including American citizens. The border patrol must be ecstatic about being able to display their ignorance and hubris for all the world to see. They are also deporting families of soldiers enlisted in the U.S. military!
17In our part of the world, the Border Nazi belive they are immune to the laws of physics as they drive like maniacs. I have my handy dash cam and keep sending video to their commanding officer. Doesn’t do any good, but makes me feel better.
18Cheryl, well, THAT was encouraging….
19Paul says: “…the Border Nazi belive they are immune to the laws of physics as they drive like maniacs.”
The worst windshield crack I ever got was down on the Military Highway (US 281), just east of Hidalgo, TX.
A big ol’ Migra (BP) 4WD Suburban came flying out of a farm field edgerow between the highway and Rio Grande, onto the highway going east (I was westbound into Hidalgo).
It had been raining for a couple of days and the Migra ‘burban’s tires had picked up a bunch of mud and rocks. As we passed one of the rocks flew off their tire and hit me right ahead of the steering wheel. Put a huge crack in the windshield. Would it have happened if they were going slower, who knows?
Yeah, maniacs. And I used to play poker with some of them.
20Something else:
Guess what? Most of their wives had (illegal) maids at home…Hell, we all did, gardeners too. :]
glf: You’re in luck. It’s already started. It’s a low simmer right now, but by summer it will be full boil. On another site, a woman (Canadian) who visits DisneyWorld every year is reluctant now to visit because her boyfriend (Canadian, too) has a “foreign-sounding” name. Now, Disney will lose but so will Orlando which depends on those tourist tax dollars! So, to all you Trumpanzees in FL: suck it!
21I’m on a committee to decide the location of a large international conference. It’s supposed to be in North America, but I’m suggesting we go with Canada or Mexico. (That would justify the losing battle I’m having trying to learn Spanish at 70.)
22My theory is that the snacilbupeR are going to so thoroughly f**k up America that the electorate will throw them entirely out and it will be decades before they attain any relevance.
In today’s Wapo there is an article about someone who agrees with me.
It will become very difficult economically, culturally and socially. It will be bad enough to get the attention of the deniers and we’ll make a sharp return to liberalism.
This author, Neil Howe, wrote a book positing that very thing. He says that White House Nazi Bannon gets his worldview there. F**k Bannon, he’s beside the point and Howe thinks Bannon got it wrong. These times Howe refers to as the Fourth Turning have historically always resulted in increased liberalism, not white nationalism.
If you’d like to read the article, it’s here: https://goo.gl/xIo35D
I’m going to see if I can get the book, The Fourth Turning, by Neil Howe and William Strauss, from the local library.
23Henry Rouso is Jewish. He fled Egypt due to anti-semitism.
Also, here is what happened to a Canadian couple:

@Deb#4-At least until the Anzacs make American GIs eat mutton. My late father a Purple Heart awardee combat engineer veteran of the southwest Pacific campaign served with some Aussies during the New Guinea portion of that campaign and that was his only complaint, which he quickly qualified by saying, “at least it was fairly fresh meat”. That was his only complaint about Aussies- who he categorized as first- rate troops- he was not so kind to New Guinea which he described as straight up- and- down and knee deep in mud.
25I read the other day that the online bookings for the US from all over Europe are down 12 % since last year.
We must resist.
