And If You Polled Old White Men With Chewing Tobacco and Gunracks ….
Now here is an interesting visual —
.
My Daddy was a white man. My brother is a white man. I married a white man and gave birth to only white men. All my white men vote Democratic. I don’t think that’s solely because I have a shotgun and an abiding need to clean the gene pool of any resemblance to Ted Cruz, but on the other hand, it probably doesn’t hurt either. Just sayin’, ya know.
Thanks to Jay for the heads up.
Yipes! What a scary thought. We’d be back in the dark ages and starting wars every year.
1…and nothing, absolutely nothing, would make the GOP happier.
2Now I understand why they are trying to regulate women and minorities back into second class citizens without the right to vote.
3Interesting that I know a lot of old white men who vote Democratic, including some with guns who hunt regularly (though none of them chew tobacco.)
But then, the old white men who are Elephants and I steer clear of each other. Or (in a small town where it’s better to get along than not) we sort of know we should not bring up politics with each other. Unfortunately for me, my father is an Elephant and appears set to live forever (he’s 101 now) but fortunately for me, he lives in California and isn’t really part of my life, just my genes. I think all his other sons-in-law are or were Elephants (I don’t know my half-sisters well at all–he kept me a secret for decades.) Younger white Elephants I meet while traveling or at conventions are more determined to “win”, and they soon discover that a old gray Donkey can kick just as hard as a young one, and bite, too.
(You cannot imagine, or maybe you can, the effect of substantially sized old lady who can rip a new one for the brash younger male writer. And they know my history–it’s all out there online. And they think a Marine will cower in terror when they mention their guns? Like….[imagine what I might say here if not for respecting Juanita Jean’s mama.])
At any rate, the map makes me sad, but the reality is…if we can keep voters registered and if they go to the polls, the Great White Elephant is outnumbered.
4Well, as an “Old White Man,” I ain’t voted for any Republican in years (other than the Mike Anderson fiasco in Harris County, with a certified nut on the Democratic ticket)! I attributes this to critical thinking skills taking over as I got older. Why this skill hasn’t evolved in other old folks completely mystifies me. Does remind me of an anecdote in my past, however. As a young guy, I was working as music minister in an old, respected(?) Baptist church in East Texas. Needless to say, I encountered a lot of “We’ve never done it that way before!” resistance from many of the older folks. A good friend, also an “older folk,” suggested there was nothing wrong with that church that twenty good funerals wouldn’t fix. I see similar scenarios here.
5So is this the opening shot in the crusade to disenfranchise American males? ;-D
6Wow. Maybe not totally disenfranchise but I guess y’all noticed awhile back when two of the four elephant candidates spoke out in favor of repealing the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. You know, so the super duper rich guys can pat us on the head and appoint the Senators instead of us having the gall to go try to register to vote and then, gasp, actually VOTING. You might want to read juvenile history book MARCHING FOR FREEDOM by Elizabeth Partridge. It’s full of photos of the civil rights movement in Selma, Alabama. I was showing it to a friend who saw little girls she knew and she said, “I taught them dancing.” Her husband was in the USAF and requested to be stationed in Selma so he could see for himself what was going on there. Anyway, one thing that went on was, you could only register to vote two days (a week? a month?) and when the black folks went down to register the lady inside locked the door and hung out a sign that said OUT TO LUNCH and left it out all day. Anyway, if all the women in Texas voted, it would make a huge difference.
7OK. This is where I get misty-eyed and all trembly lipped about the U.S. Constitution, the suffragists (not “gettes”) and all the civil rights supporters and swear on my still breathing body that the map shown on this site will never be a reality! So help me Alice Paul!
8The white men who are behind this evil juggernaut to make Americans vote against their own interests will be getting even more desperately evil as their numbers decline in this century. I hope my organs give out before I have to witness any more of this ongoing travesty.
9Just shows why we shouldn’t leave only white men in charge of the country. (Not to say there aren’t good ones like my husband.)
10Two men, two votes, Charles and David Koch. Having bought Congress, they now want the White House. Those two evil gohmerts should be tried for crimes against humanity. If they try to buy it with Paul Ryan, Dear goddess, no. Just no.
11Speaking as an old white guy sans pickup gunrack and chawing tubacky, whatthahell’s wrong with so many of the other old white guys?
12Awhile back there was an article entitled, “I lost my Dad to Fox News”. It suggested that retired men and women who have nothing better to do, get sucked into the black hole that is Fox. They become hate-filled, angry, bitter people who spout the Fox line and watch it day and night. I saw it happen with my dad. My mother had Alzheimers so she remained blissfully unaware of the spew.
13Trying to talk to him about objectivity and Bill O’Reilly’s obvious slant was not possible.
When my Dad began to show signs of dementia around age 90, he did not watch it anymore and was the better for it.
Maryelle, I began losing my mother when the OJ Simpson trial was going on. By now she is so hooked on Fox that she even leaves the TV on when she’s not home so that she can see it the minute she returns. She walks through WalMart with a transistor radio in her pocket and an earpiece in place so she can laugh along with Rush. I can feel my lunch coming back up just writing about this.
14Another old white guy and lifelong Democrat checking in. Sure, there are lots of us out there, but it only takes 50.0001% to turn all those electoral votes red. that’s why voter suppression tactics are high on all Republican to do lists.
15The only reason for voter id laws is to depress the vote.
16Thanks, JJ, and you’re welcome! Here’s some followup on Aaron Burgess’ map:
Aaron later tweeted:
“More frustrating is this is the @GOP’s not-so-secret justification for restrictive #voterID laws.”

Aaron had tagged @sfpelosi (Christine Pelosi, daughter of Nancy) in his tweets, and there was quite a bit of conversation between Christine Pelosi, Aaron, and other Twitter users. Here is a comment from one Twitter user:
“Keep rigging the districts, suppressing the #vote & 2016 will look like that map”
… To which Christine Pelosi replied:
“Sad but true; great motivation to organize!”

Yes, the fewer of us who vote, the more that map will become a reality. “GOTV” must be the Democratic charge for this year and in all the years to come.
17@Maryelle: Sue Fox on your Dad’s behalf. That’s not dementia, it’s stress fracturing.
18Well, Aaron Burgess, we live in a time we call the present! In this time, newfangled ideas like women voting and no segregation are a reality! Shut your trap!
