  3. LOVE this! Thanks for the graphic, John! I will tweet out this picture on Saturday after Leticia announces! 😀

  4. All I remember is that she came directly to the filibuster from her father’s funeral. She threw herself into it, and is a bona fide GREAT PERSON!

  5. “At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over the male colleagues in the room?”

When I saw her say this on the livestream as it happened during the filibuster, I said “Whoa! Who is THIS? She’s got some STUFF!” 🙂

  6. She is a real force! I’ll be sorely disappointed if she doesn’t run.

It’s not too early to donate a buck or two to her campaign.

  8. So, as a practicing pharmacist and Dem, maybe the good Senator could cross the aisle. in the spirit of bipartisanship, and make sure all those repubs not only have their meds with them but take them as their mental heath professional prescribes. Just a thought…

  9. I just love her.

  10. Help me out, I’m from Maryland. Is Texas one of those states where Gov and Lt Gov run separately? I know they do in VA but not in MD, where they’re linked as they are in the national race. So is Van de Putte running with Davis, or in parallel?

Yeah, I know, “Leticia” and “Wendy”, but women, like children and dogs, get called by first names, and often only men get a last name. I try to resist that.

    10
  11. They are separate offices and the Lite Gov actually has the more powerful job as President of the Senate (setting agenda, appointing Senate committees, etc.) in the State Constitution.
If the Gov and Lite Gov are simpatico, things run smoothly. If they are fighting, it is like all the leg strings in a fighting chicken breeding farm broke simultaneously.

  12. Rhea, here in Texas we tend to call politicians and musicians by their first names, regardless of gender. This is particularly true if we like them or if they have a first name that works better than their last for identifying them. Lyndon Johnson was always just Lyndon, for example.

    12
  13. @Rhea The same as Nancy Jane Moore said about Texas goes for New York as well: We call politicians by their first names here, regardless of gender. That is also true regardless of whether we like them or not. For instance, in New York City, former mayor Rudolph Giuliani was universally known as “Rudy”, whether or not we agreed with him. In more recent years, our current Mayor Mike Bloomberg officially ran as “Mayor Mike”. And of course, our very famous former NY senator is known worldwide as “Hillary” — no last name needed, regardless of how you feel about her. I don’t think it’s demeaning at all to refer to Wendy Davis and Leticia Van de Putte as “Wendy and Leticia”. In fact — like “Hillary” — it sets them apart and makes them sound warmer to voters than would “Davis and Van de Putte”. “Children and dogs” are very beloved to us, after all. 🙂
