A Quick One
Guys, I’m up to my neck in alligators right now but I just have to say this —
What the hell kind of world do we live in when we can bring terrorists to this country and give them a safe, fair trial, but a federal prosecutor feels the need to withdraw from a case with the Aryan Brotherhood?
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Hileman, who has withdrawn from a large federal racketeering case against alleged members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas prison gang, cited “security reasons” in an email he sent Monday to defense attorneys involved in the case, according to one lawyer who received the email.
“He sent the email to every lawyer representing a defendant in the Aryan Brotherhood federal case, and he said — very short email — that he was withdrawing for security reasons,” Houston attorney Katherine Scardino told TPM on Tuesday.
What the hell is going on?
More tomorrow. I am sure of that.
Thanks to Aggieland Liz for the heads up.
He doesn’t want to get shot. Doesn’t he carry a gun with him, you know, the good guy with the gun?
1Given the latest round of murders of a Texas D.A. and Asst. DA, this result is not unexpected. Those Aryan Bros are suspected in both and purported to be responsible for even more retaliatory deaths. There is also suspicion that they are in league with Mexican cartels. Perry may have to actually get off his derriere and call in the feds.
2The Aryan Brotherhood is white, the alleged (not convicted yet) terrorist is not.
3The terrorists win again.
4The Texas DA carried a gun even while walking the dog and answering his door, and he and his wife both got shot and killed in their home.
Looks like “good guy with a gun” isn’t the answer. Prosecuting these domestic terrorists would be a start.
5Maybe NOW that D.A.’s and Judges are running scared, we might get some sane gun control legislation. Or they may legislate Pizza Deliveries.
6As of yet, the suspect(s) has not been identified.
7Do y’all remember a few years ago (2002 if memory serves), when the FBI released a report saying the right wing represented a serious security threat? Faux Noise and the Republicans got their knickers in a knot at the time….
Is it possible that the FBI might have a point and that FOX was wrong?
8Read an article(forget where, but it was from Monday) that we are going to see more and more of these types of crimes.
The new for profit prisons are to blame. They are getting younger and younger ‘kids” from school systems that may not even have criminal pasts. These prisons are being used as juvenile detention centers from schools in big cities.
These are private with little over site. And they are reaping what they sew. Remember the Southern Poverty Law Center’s report on hate groups?
9Sorry, the quilter in me wrote sew instead of sow.
10The gardener is still on hold. 20 degree’s this am.
Here Diane, try googling “sutton iris” and “Smokeys daylilys” and just dream of spring. They have some good hardy varieties at both farms. I have iris blooming now that arrived last fall – but a week ago Mon it was 29 at my house in centex and there was some damage!
11Check out this article from LA Times:
KAUFMAN, Texas – Officials investigating the deaths of two prosecutors in this rural community east of Dallas have turned their attention to a former local official who threatened the two victims after losing his job in a corruption investigation, according to federal law enforcement officials briefed about the case.

12@Deb, thanks for the link. Here is an interesting, longer story on the mess in Kaufman:

Jose, when the temporary assault weapons ban was set to lapse a few years ago, prosecutors and law enforcement were on the side of continuing the ban. They were ignored. The NRA rules.
14I’m sorry, Mr. U. S. Attorney Jay Hileman, but you need to grow you some cojones and do your damn job. Yes, you might die. You might also die from a car wreck nobody planned. When you have dangerous criminals, you don’t fail to prosecute because you’re scared…you prosecute and you convict. That’s your job.
Yes, it’s scary. But the only way past scary is to do the right thing, which is not to run away.
15The system is broken. Prison does nothing to stem the march of gangs. Gangs are the size of armies now literally and just as well equipped. Our fractured law enforcement system does not address what is a global problem. We are living in the 1800 with our approach to policing. Local cops can not stop this problem. We should have learned back in the 30s with those gangs. Jurisdictions work to their advantage. It was only when the FBI expanded and went after them across the whole country they were brought under control. Now we have to deal with them operating put of other countries. They are more warlords than gangsters. That is not recognized at all.
16That Texas DA was shot as many as 20 times. Shucks, honey! That sounds way, way personal to me. Somebody knew him too damn well. The DA probably even answered the doorbell hisownself and knew the perp as a friend.
17@Robin Frazier, yeah, and that warlord method of taking care of business has served humans well for a very long time, since we were running around in loose family groups and tribes. Simple frequently works pretty well.
