Hey, Barbara in DC : UPDATE

October 24, 2019 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Well, well, well.  We thought he wouldn’t come, but … maybe. But only if he doesn’t look fat.

Will he throw out the first pitch?

They’ve got to dress me up in a lot of heavy armor — I’ll look too heavy,” he responded when a reporter asked him about whether he would take the mound. Trump appeared to be making a reference to a bulletproof vest that presidents sometimes are required to wear by Secret Service when they are amid large crowds.

Yeah, that’s the o n l y reason. He can throw a 95 mph fast ball. Believe  him, he can.

  1. Excuses, excuses. You know he doesn’t want to embarrass himself “throwing” out the first pitch.

    1
  2. I just found out about this–right after eating dinner, which I may upchuck.

Apparently, the Nats have told him that he will NOT be throwing out the first pitch.

Here’s the thing: If the Nats sweep in 4, there won’t be a game 5 for that fool to attend. But sweeping the Astros . . . I dunno. If it were any other team . . .

My money is on him not attending. This was probably nothing more than a passing thought to get in on the action. DC is going completely nuts over the Nats and he can’t stand the spotlight to be on anybody else. Plus, the odds of him being very loudly booed are way too high for him to risk it. He only got 4% of the DC vote in 2016 and that number is not likely to improve–assuming he is still in office next November.

  5. Why would he require a bulletproof vest? We WANT to see him attempt an opening pitch and his guaranteed denigration & high crime against baseball and America. It’s one more impeachable offense.

    5
  6. I felt the same way about Trump as 99% of Juanita’s readers, but Trump was an excellent baseball player as a kid and was scouted by MLB teams.

    6
  7. The idiot LOOKS fat because he IS fat. Or is he wearing full body armor in all those fat photos on the golf course?

    7
  8. Henry,
Trump may have played baseball, might have been pretty good in his salad days, but that was over 50 years & under 200 pounds ago. Even if pitching is like riding a bike, and there’s a will, no way an old Schwinn won’t buckle & collapse under the present state of reality.

  15. This will make sure Dolt 45 stays well away from Nats Park, should there be a game 5: Jose Andres will throw out the first pitch.

Neither the Nats’ owners, nor the management are stupid people and they have found an absolutely delicious way to stick it to Orange Foolius. I love my people.

Expect a trump tweet (or seven) about the “failing” Nats and MLB’s mistreatment of Rob Drake. He’s the umpire who promised a “cival war” in the event of impeachment (not working the World Series, probably out shopping for that assault rifle).

A couple of weeks ago, on an episode of “Madame Secretary”, there was a dream sequence where Elizabeth (now president) threw out the first pitch and beaned Mr. Met, the team mascot. I had a giggling fit that lasted a full 2 minutes.

Politics is always so much better when it’s deliberately fictional.

As far as “professional” sports teams, I have -absolutely- no interest in the taxmoney-sucking parasitical welfare queens, but I’ll give a cheer to the Nats for snubbing our Designated Asshole.

    Way off-topic:

Several other folks at the salon have posted tips and methods to avoid web annoyances (not the TwitterHead-in-Chief, just the irritating things browsers serve up). I don’t get blocked by a paywall at WP, but I suspect is it because I wipe out all cookies and LSOs everytime I shut down the browser.

You can check if that works in Firefox by clearing out all cruft from your current session. Go to History –> Clear Recent History. Set the time range to “Everything”, and select all the boxes for both History and Data. Then choose “Clear Now”, and try the WP link again. If it comes up with the article, then you can just do that anytime you get blocked.

In addition, one of the many paranoid extensions I’ve installed might also be credited. Those are:

    1. Adblock Plus
    2. Ghostery
    3. uBlock Origin
    4. NoScript
    5. Popup Blocker

Some sites will put an overlay up to keep you from seeing the page. The extension

    6. Behind The Overlay

gives you a button that will remove it. Finally, this won’t help with paywalls, but is my best friend on the web:

    7. Kill Sticky

removes the header and footers that too many web sites insist on putting on the page. If it has one of those stupic boxes that follows along as you page down, it will also get rid of those.

I think Sandridge also had some recommendations in the past. Maybe we should put together a page about Grumpy Old Paranoids’ Web Browsing Tips?

  20. The Surly Professor @19,
I did post numerous such computer and internet tips here [and elsewhere] in the past [been in the biz since the late ’60’s-70’s-now]. It gets complicated so most just get overwhelmed I guess.

Personally I almost never ‘clear’ a browser, you will lose a lot of valuable history and data that you’ll still be reinputting weeks later. But then I may do things a little differently, but very securely.
I almost exclusively use the Opera browser [since ’90’s], it is the most secure and efficient one, and has pioneered most of the desirable features of modern browsers.
I hate it, but sometimes must use MS Edge.

Google Chrome is absolute poison, weapons-grade infectious WMD; spies on you like you wouldn’t believe, as does the ‘Google search’, and Faceborg of course.
Use some other browser and search engine, even Bing, or Duckduckgo. Please.

Opera browser has versions for almost all OS’s and devices [‘puters, tabs, phones, etc].
It allows you to have dozens of windows, hundreds of tabs open indefinitely [my main machine is on 99.9% of the time] , then maybe do a reboot [like a damned Microstuff update], click once and all your browser stuff is back in a few minutes, right where you left it. Saves lots of time and effort.

Opera also has a built-in 1-click –VPN– [with options] to hide yourself with.

*** Opera also has an extremely effective built-in 1-click ad-and everyotherannoyance blocker –built in–; I rarely see any ‘crap’ on my screen ever; there are also a couple ‘extensions’ that go further..
Opera has many more features and advantages, too much for me here.
    http://www.opera.com

    Now for [just] some ‘security:
Comodo Internet Security (CIS), hands-down the best comprehensive security package/app you can get!
Free or paid versions available for most OS’s and devices. I use it on dozens of things.
Comodo also has 2 excellent browsers, Dragon and IceDragon.
CIS has the best anti-virus, firewall, and other security apps/features you can get, all as simple or complex as you desire. It is now on mostly ‘automatic’ so you don’t need to do manual updates and stuff anymore.
With Comodo CIS you should be nearly bulletproof from ‘the internet nasties’.
Comodo also offers other excellent programs/apps, like VPNs, SecurityCerts, etc [check out the ‘legacy apps’].

Of course there’s more, much more:
    MalwareBytes, for extra A/V, rootkit, etc., protection;

    Thunderbird email client [Mozilla] to handle your email, all of it from different sources [I don’t let it handle my uber-secure Protonmail, but that’s only for the hyper-paraniod… ;] ];

    there’s even more, gaack.

  21. The Surly Professor says:

Sandridge, all good stuff. I also like Opera, and it uses Google’s Chromium for rendering. That engine (called Blink) is open source code, but most of the rest of the code is closed source. That’s the main reason I mostly use Firefox, or text-based browsers.

I’ll retire in a few months, and may try to start a Web site to explain these issues and make recommendations to people like the clientele of this joint, who mostly just want to get things done without worrrying about nerdy details. If so, I’ll notify you and get your take and suggestions on the items.

And I swear I’ll never get into arguments about the best text editor to use, or what The World’s Best Programming Language is (answer: none of them!)

    21
  22. Sandridge says:

    The Surly Professor @21,
I purposely didn’t mention the Vivaldi browser as a preferred fav too. :] I use Firefox and the Dragons too, used to use Safari and some others.
Yes I know about Opera now being based on a core Chromium, which is quite different from the [nasty] Google Chrome browser. Same with Presto vs. the Blink engine.
I hated it when Opera switched to it long ago, the older ‘Operas’ were great, but I guess they needed something extra.
I even still use Opera 12 [iirc], the last great one, it even has a great email client built-in [also now a separate app]; and runs fine on any Windows version [xp/7/8/10].
Now Opera’s on version 64, I just updated from v63, and am now getting random browser crashes :[ , it usually restarts itself and in 10min you’re back where you were; but any kind of anomaly bugs me.

The ‘nerdy’ website for non-nerds sounds like a great idea. A surface ‘simple’ appearance and plan/flowchart, but with underlying complexity available.
So that very non-tech or avg tech peeps can just follow some basic steps and be well protected, shielded, minimal ad chaff, de-spied, and running much cleaner.
All that ‘extra’ crap just loads down the machines and your ISP connection/data allowance.
And also consumes much more power. I took measurements [on a UPS log and w/a kwhmeter] of electric usage with Opera’s adblocker and w/o, the adblocker saves 30-70% of the electricity to run a [powerful] PC and ancillaries.
Really, all that adware and spy related crap actually wastes a lot of power. I configure more than that though, blocking other stuff [like the viral Flash].
I use Wordpad most, then OpenOffice.
[I try to conserve, and even switched from a 22hp gas lawn tractor to a Ryobi Electric Battery tractor mower– a fantastic machine: no gas, oil, belts, filters, heat, fumes, noise, much less maintenance and operating costs, etc. Just waiting for an EV vehicle/SUV I can afford; and big enough, current stuff’s just too small.]
