Personal Story

August 14, 2019 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

I have a team of housekeepers who come every two weeks and they have for almost ten years.  They work for a woman who cleaned my house for 15 years before that and then set up her own business.  She taught these women well.  They do a great job.

Maria, who is the head of my team, is here on a green card.  Between her limited English and my limited Spanish, we communicate well.  Her daughter, who was born here, is coming back to Texas from a summer internship in Georgia.  She will graduate in December from the University of Houston with a degree in mechanical engineering.  Her other daughter is a senior in high school, and plays varsity baseball.  She’s hoping for a baseball scholarship to St Mary’s in San Antonio.

Maria is terrified.  She is terrified that ICE will pick her up based on the color of her skin alone.  She is terrified they will revoke her green card.  She is terrified that some fool will try to solve Trump’s immigration “problem”  with military weapons at her grocery store.

She asked me to please vote for Beto.  Apparently, Beto is all over Spanish news television, through no fault of his own.  The news coverage of El Paso is heavy on Spanish tv.  It is awaking something large in the Texas Hispanic community.

Most Anglos aren’t aware the El Paso gunman killed seven Juarez residents who were just in the US shopping. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s on the Espanol news all the way to Madrid and Buenos Aires. Doesn’t take much imagination to spin that as a Trump Versus the Spanish Speaking World storyline. If Beto is emerging in those markets as a reasonable American leader in counterpoise to Trump, the man has a future.

Please convey our apologies and support to Maria and her family. We’re understand; the boys’ Uncle Freddy is a recent US resident born in El Salvador. Hell, it’ll be mid winter or never before my own color isn’t highly suspect with the wingnuts. Resist, vote and hope we all survive until IQ4.5 and his maladministration are gone.

  3. @Brad #1, NPR has mentioned the Juarez residents many times. They’re my primary news source. So it is getting out there.

I agree w/ @Jane #2. Please give Maria a hug for me – if she’s the hugging type. It just plain sucks, what’s going on.

  4. I look forward to the day when Donald Trump has to go into hiding afraid to leave the tower. No longer able to eat burgers even at McDonald’s, because he doesn’t have to imagine someone who works there might spit on his food. He’s sure of it.

  6. Sounds like Beto is walking away from a golden opportunity to beat Slippery John Cornyn like a rented mule so he can pretend he is a presidential candidate this time around.

I like what Beto says and does, and I’d like to see him as president–but not this time. I think he’d make a better Senator
right now, and he’ll never have a better chance to beat John Cornyn. C’mon, Beto, go home and run for Senate!

  8. I agree Beto has a much better chance of beating Cornyn than Trump. And he’s probably the best chance of doing so. Doesn’t necessarily guaranty success. I love the guy. But expecting him to choose his path based on my opinion is purty arrogant.

  9. It keeps coming back to: “What harm are these people who make our country run doing to Steve Miller and his ilk?” .

Is it such a aberration for Jean’s experience (and my similar one except they speak Portuguese)? Dare I say, they do a good job, and I’m happy to employ them…

  10. Rick (#4), my guess is Trump will go into hiding somewhere like the UAE.
